Brooks Koepka doesn't appear to be returning any time soon, and a return for next month's Masters Tournament looks increasingly doubtful.

Koepka posted a collage of photos to Twitter on Sunday evening, among them an image of his right knee bandaged, one of Koepka on crutches and another of the golfer on an anti-gravity treadmill.

He later confirmed to Golfweek via email that he had surgery on his right knee on March 16.

“Whatever my body says, I’m going to listen,” he told Golfweek in regards to his Masters status.

The four-time major winner hasn't played since tying for second at the WGC-Workday Championship earlier this month. He withdrew from The Players with a "strained right knee," according to his agent, who said the Koepka, who had previously battled  left knee and hip injuries for much of the previous couple of years, would "further consult with doctors ... to receive a more extensive evaluation and outlook."

Koepka told Golfweek that he was diagnosed with “a right knee cap dislocation and ligament damage.”

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – When Matt Jones won his first PGA Tour title seven years ago, he needed a 45-foot birdie putt just to get into a playoff and then a 40-yard chip-in to take the victory.

This win was far less dramatic, yet just as meaningful.

It got him back to the Masters.

Jones won The Honda Classic by five shots Sunday, a final round of 2-under 68 good enough to finish the week at 12-under 268 at PGA National. The margin matched the largest in tournament history, tying the mark set by Jack Nicklaus in 1977 and matched by Camilo Villegas in 2010.

“Pretty emotional,” Jones said moments after sealing the win, his voice cracking a bit. “Seven years.”

Matt Jones captured The Honda Classic, but he wasn't the only big winner on Sunday. So, too, was runner-up Brandon Hagy.

The 40-year-old Australian earned $1.26 million and, this time, he’ll have more than a day to prepare for the trip to Augusta National. His win at the Houston Open in 2014 – and his Masters invite – came just one day before he had to go to Augusta, so it was a mad scramble to get family and friends together to share in the experience.

The Masters is three weeks away this time.

Jones started the week with a course-record-tying round of 9-under 61. He was three shots behind Aaron Wise after 36 holes after a second-round 70, and his round of 69 on Saturday was good enough to put him up by three entering Sunday.

Brandon Hagy (66) finished 7 under and alone in second on his 30th birthday, his chance at winning doomed by a third-round 76. Chase Seiffert (64), Brendan Steele (65), C.T. Pan (70), Denny McCarthy (67) and Russell Henley (68) tied for third at 6 under.

“There’s a lot of tough holes out there and there’s big stakes for sure, but I’ve been working on some good stuff and it’s nice to see some of that pan out,” Hagy said.

The only stretch where Jones’ grip on the lead seemed in peril was midway through the round; Wise, who once led by six shots during the third round, had four birdies in a six-hole stretch on the front and got within one of the lead.

Aaron Wise was one shot back with nine holes to play at the Honda Classic before four-putting the par-4 10th.

Wise’s chances ended at the par-4 10th. He hit his second into a bunker, then four-putted from 27 feet for triple bogey. Jones’ lead went to four, and he avoided trouble the rest of the way, while Wise finished with a 73 and tied for 13th at 4 under.

J.B. Holmes was in the final group with Jones, three shots back to start the day, and his chances were gone very quickly.

Holmes knocked his shot from a greenside bunker off the green and made bogey on the opening hole, then sent his tee shot way right on the par-4 second and needed about 10 minutes to find the ball – it was nestled among palm fronds – and decide how to proceed.

He went on to make double bogey there, and when Jones birdied the par-5 third Holmes’ deficit had gone from three to eight shots in about 45 minutes. It was a costly final-round 79 for Holmes; second place, where he was to begin the day, wound up paying Hagy $763,000 — while the tied-for-46th finish paid Holmes $19,070.

At that point, only a few had a realistic chance at catching Jones. Before long, the outcome was obvious.

“You can’t get a tougher golf course to win on than this one, in these conditions,” Jones said. “To be able to do that on this golf course is amazing and something I can build on for the future, hopefully.”

DIVOTS: Phil Mickelson started 3 under through three holes Sunday and finished with a 70 on the day, 2 under for the tournament. “I was really impressed with the golf course and the setup was terrific,” Mickelson said. … U.S. Ryder Cup captain Steve Stricker shot 69 Sunday and was 4 under for the week. … Rickie Fowler and Bronson Burgoon, the first group off Sunday morning, played in about 3 hours, 20 minutes. … Nobody has shot four rounds in the 60s at the Honda since 2017. The four players who had a chance to do it Sunday — Keegan Bradley (74), Holmes, Cameron Tringale (72) and defending champion Sungjae Im — all fell short. Im came closest, shooting 70 Sunday and finishing 5 under to tie for seventh with, among others, Villegas and Zach Johnson.

Mourinho: Why did Spurs need horror week to improve?

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 21 March 2021 17:13

Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho praised his team's attitude after a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday but questioned why it had taken two dreadful performances to galvanise them into action.

Last Sunday's feeble performance in a north-London derby defeat by Arsenal was followed by a lamentable 3-0 capitulation away to Dinamo Zagreb to crash out of the Europa League.

- Tottenham ratings: Moura 8/10, Kane 7/10 in much-needed win

But goals by Carlos Vinicius and Harry Kane earned a win at Villa that put Tottenham up into sixth spot in the Premier League, just three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

"Okay I am really happy with [the response], but it is sad we need such a bad defeat to have this kind of reaction," Mourinho, who accused his team of not respecting their jobs after defeat by Dinamo, said.

"This should not be a reaction, this should be a permanent state of mind, permanent soul in the team, I think that is our next challenge -- to have this standard in terms of effort, commitment, sacrifice.

Mourinho, who said he had "opened his heart more than in 20 years" after the midweek defeat made seven changes to the side that started in Zagreb, bringing in the likes of young Welsh centre-back Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga while Vinicius was given only his second Premier League start.

Tottenham survived a rocky spell in the first half but after Vinicius tapped in the opener in the 29th minute the visitors grew in confidence with Kane adding a second-half penalty.

"I felt the team needed a different spirit, humble, honest, simple people like Japhet, Rodon, Vinicius, the two 16-year-olds on the bench are living the dream," he said.

"It is a big three points, now the guys disappear and come back two or three days before the next match and let's pray and hope they come back in good conditions."

Kane said the team had been "embarrassed" by the events in Zagreb and called on them to now push for the top four.

"The last couple of games we dropped below our standards. It was nice to get it back today -- everyone fighting, putting their bodies on the line," he said.

"That's what we need to do for the rest of the season to give the top four a push."

Villa manager Dean Smith said his side lacked quality in the final third and hoped that Jack Grealish's return after the international break would spark his side back into life.

"We can't [just] wait for Jack to come back. The players there, it's their opportunity. Not too many have taken it," he said of Villa's slump since their captain got injured.

USMNT's Dest, Messi each net brace in Barca win

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 21 March 2021 17:13

Sergino Dest and Lionel Messi each scored twice while Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele also netted goals as Barcelona thrashed Real Sociedad 6-1 in La Liga action on Sunday.

- Barcelona ratings: Dest, Messi 9/10 in dominant win
- Stream ESPN FC Daily on ESPN+ (U.S. only)
- ESPN+ viewer's guide: Bundesliga, Serie A, MLS, FA Cup and more

The win keeps Barca in the chase for the league title with 62 points, four points behind Atletico Madrid and two ahead of Real Madrid. The game also marked Messi's 768th appearance for the Catalan squad, breaking Xavi's all-time mark.

Griezmann opened the scoring by netting against his old club in the 36th minute and Dest stretched Barca's lead shortly before halftime after latching on to a sweeping pass from Messi.

Dest struck again early in the second half before Messi controlled a sumptuous pass from Sergio Busquets and scored.

With his two-goal effort, Dest becomes the third United States international to score in Spain's top flight, joining Jozy Altidore and Yunus Musah, who committed to the USMNT over England last week.

Dembele struck his side's fifth goal of the night in the 71st minute after a brilliant solo run while Sociedad's Ander Barrenetxea hit arguably the best goal of the game to give his side a rare moment of joy.

Messi, however, had the final say, finishing off a flowing team move in the 89th minute to score his 23rd league goal of the season, increasing his lead at the top of the scoring charts.

Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman has criticised his side after a number of games this season for not being clinical enough in front of goal but had no complaints after they scored six times with 10 attempts on target against Sociedad.

"It's always important for players other than Leo to score goals. That way it's much harder to defend against us," Koeman told reporters.

The victory took Barca above Real Madrid into second place in the standings on 62 points, four behind leaders Atletico Madrid with 10 games left to play.

Koeman added: "Every game from now on for us, Atletico and Real will be difficult. It's going to be very exciting until the end of the season and we just have to keep on playing as we are."

Barca used to dread facing Sociedad away from home, failing to beat them in San Sebastian for more than a decade.

"This is a difficult place to come, Barca always used to struggle here but we came flying out of the blocks," said Griezmann.

"We worked very hard, we won the ball lots of times deep in their half and reacted well every time we lost it. It was a great Barcelona performance."

Sociedad forward Alexander Isak should have given the hosts an early lead from close range but could only shoot straight at keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who denied the Swede again moments before Dest doubled Barca's lead.

"This wasn't our best game and they were clearly better than us and overwhelmed us," said Sociedad forward Mikel Oyarzabal.

"They were more ruthless than us; we went into halftime feeling bad as they scored all their chances while we couldn't convert ours and the second half was very different as a result. But no-one likes to lose like that.

Canterbury may need a bigger trophy cabinet after becoming the first team to win four domestic titles in a New Zealand season with the men's side clinching the Plunket Shield and the women claiming the one-day Hallyburton Johnstone Shield.

It follows previous success of the men winning the Ford Trophy one-day competition and the women taking out the Super Smash. The only title that has not gone Canterbury's way this season is the men's Super Smash which was retained by Wellington.

The Plunket Shield was secured with two rounds still to play when Canterbury beat Central Districts by nine wickets and Northern Districts could only earn a draw against Wellington to put them out of the running.

Up at Eden Park's Outer Oval, the Canterbury Magicians secured their silverware with a thumping eight-wicket victory over Auckland. Amy Satterthwaite had an outstanding all-round day with 4 for 27 followed by 73 while captain Frances Mackay was unbeaten on 94 in the chase.

"Amy took all the pressure off me in the middle, she was outstanding," Mackay said. "Auckland Hearts had a score on the board that could have been defendable, although they probably needed everything to go their way.

"We did lose an early wicket, but then to have someone of the class of Amy to come out and steady the ship, as they say - she was brilliant in the way she did that."

"She makes such a difference to our side. She's three players, one of the best fielders in the competition, can bowl her ten overs and then icing on the cake with a few runs."

Boeheim's 25 sends Syracuse, dad into Sweet 16

Published in Breaking News
Sunday, 21 March 2021 17:42

INDIANAPOLIS -- Buddy Boeheim carried his father, Jim, to the Hall of Fame coach's 20th Sweet 16 appearance, scoring 22 of his 25 points after halftime to lead 11th-seeded Syracuse past third-seeded West Virginia 75-72 in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday.

Jim Boeheim's Orange got the better of another legend, Bob Huggins, in the second March Madness meeting between coaches with at least 900 Division I victories. Huggins won No. 900 when West Virginia beat Morehead State in the first round on Friday. Boeheim got his 982nd at Huggins' expense.

Syracuse (18-9) advanced to face second-seeded Houston or 10th-seeded Rutgers in a Midwest Regional semifinal.

Buddy "Buckets" Boeheim erupted in the second half, when he made all but one of his six 3-pointers. He finished 6 of 13 from deep and 8 of 17 overall, and he helped put the game away with three late free throws.

While deep tournament runs are nothing new for his dad, it's the first for Buddy, who was a freshman role player when the Orange lost in the opening round two years ago. Now he's the Orange's leading scorer and one of college basketball's most dangerous shooters. He made two straight 3s just after the break, and his jumper and 3 on consecutive possessions put Syracuse ahead 63-59 with 4:55 left.

Boeheim, Guerrier come up clutch to propel Syracuse to Sweet 16

Buddy Boeheim's 3-pointer and Quincy Guerrier's jam help push Syracuse past West Virginia.

Sean McNeil scored 23 points to lead the Mountaineers (19-10), who last made the Sweet 16 in 2018. That was the fifth time West Virginia got that far under Huggins, who also made the regional semis four times with Cincinnati.

WVU trailed 74-72 with 4 seconds left before Boeheim was fouled at midcourt on an inbounds pass. He made one free throw and missed the second, but Miles McBride traveled after grabbing the rebound.

Joe Girard III scored all 12 of his points before halftime, steadying the Orange while Boeheim struggled. Quincy Guerrier and Marek Dolezaj also scored 12 each for Syracuse.

Once again, getting into the tournament as a bubble team did Syracuse no harm. The Orange have advanced to the Sweet 16 each time they've been given a double-digit seeding, reaching the Final Four as a 10 in 2016 and the Sweet 16 as an 11 in 2018.

That more recent run ended when Boeheim's bunch lost to Duke and Mike Krzyzewski, the only previous tourney game between 900-win coaches.

March Madness, heavy on the madness. The 2021 NCAA tournament has reached the round of 32. That's right, we're only one round into the tournament and we've lost the reigning national champion (Virginia), a No. 2 seed (Ohio State), a No. 3 seed (Texas) and two No. 4 seeds (Purdue, Virginia).

The Pac-12 is undefeated. The Big 12 is 6-1 and the ACC is a miserable 2-5.

And Sunday saw the end of No. 1 seed Illinois, which lost 71-58 to Loyola Chicago.

To paraphrase The Rock, "Finally Sister Jean has come back to the Sweet 16." The team's 101-year-old chaplain offered up this analytics-heavy prayer before the game:

According to ESPN Stats & Information, Loyola Chicago has not beaten a top-2 seed in the tournament since seeding began in 1979. It knocked off just one top-3 seed on its Final Four run in 2018 (3rd-seeded Tennessee).

Read more: What happened to Illinois

The win came with a heavy dose of Cameron Krutwig and Lucas Williamson.

Krutwig, who finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds, is the third Missouri Valley player with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists in an NCAA tournament game since assists became official in 1984. The others: Bradley's Hersey Hawkins in 1988 and Tulsa's Shea Seals in 1994.

Williamson added 14 points.

Loyola Chicago is the sixth team to reach the Sweet 16 in consecutive NCAA tournament appearances as an 8 or lower seed since seeding began in 1979. Gonzaga is the only other non-major conference team to do this, doing so in three straight years from 1999 to 2001, all as a double-digit seed. But, when Loyola gets in, it wins. The program is 15-5 all time in the NCAA tournament, tying Duke for the best tournament winning percentage (.750).

Social media erupted after the upset.

RGIII and J.J. Watt 'face off'

On Friday, Arizona Cardinals defensive end J.J. Watt (a Wisconsin alum) steadily trolled his wife (a North Carolina grad) during the Badgers' first-round win over the Tar Heels.

Watt was ready to go again Sunday with Wisconsin facing No. 1 seed Baylor in the Round of 32, tweeting at former NFL QB Robert Griffin III and reality TV star Chip Gaines, both Baylor graduates. Sunday's fun did not go as well for Watt.

Baylor punched a ticket to the Sweet 16 with a 76-63 win over Wisconsin.

Dort stuffs Wall late as Rockets lose 20th straight

Published in Basketball
Sunday, 21 March 2021 18:13

HOUSTON -- Mired in a long losing streak, the Houston Rockets twice put the ball in John Wall's hands in the waning moments.

No luck, once again.

The Rockets extended their team-record losing streak to 20 games, falling to the Oklahoma City Thunder 114-112 Sunday when Wall missed two shots in the final 10 seconds.

"We have no choice but to pick up and try hard and learn and grow, and it starts with me," Houston coach Stephen Silas said.

The Rockets' skid is tied for the ninth worst in NBA history and the longest since Philadelphia's record-setting 28-game losing streak across the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons.

Houston took a 110-109 lead with less than three minutes remaining. After the Rockets went ahead, Lu Dort blocked Wall's layup from behind to protect a 113-112 edge.

"That was a heck of a play, obviously, and a great second effort," Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said. "He was out of the play a little bit and made a great comeback. I thought he was great, offensively, as well. I thought he really attacked."

With 4.9 seconds remaining, Houston inbounded the ball near its basket, with Jae'Sean Tate passing to Wall. Guarded by Dort, Wall took one dribble and attempted a deep 3-pointer from 29 feet that clanked wide left off the side of the rim and backboard.

Isaiah Roby secured the rebound and the win for the Thunder. Wall was 1-for-7 from 3 in the game.

"It worked out that way -- it was supposed to end up in a pick-and-roll," Silas said of the final possession. "It didn't. This one hurts."

Dort scored 23 points and Roby had 18 for the Thunder, who led by as many as 13 points. Svi Mykhailiuk and Justin Jackson each had 15 points off the bench.

"I've been trying to work on making good decisions at the end of games, and I thought I did good in the end today," Dort said. "We just had to step up and make some big plays at the end. We wanted to win, and that's what we did."

Christian Wood had 27 points, eight rebounds and two blocks for Houston, Wall had 24 points and seven assists, and Victor Oladipo had 23 points.

Wall, Wood and Oladipo combined for 40 first-half points. It was just the fifth time all season all three players have played in the same game.

The Rockets hit a franchise-record 28 3s in a win against the Thunder on Feb. 1, just three days before their last win. On Sunday, the Rockets were just 14-of-38 on 3s.

Sunday's game was originally supposed to be the season opener on Dec. 23, but it was postponed for COVID-19 protocols.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Celtics guard Marcus Smart said that in the wake of the team's loss to the Sacramento Kings on Friday night -- Boston's fourth in five games to open the second half of the regular season -- the Celtics held a team meeting to try to right themselves and turn around what has been a disappointing campaign before it's too late.

"We just kind of sat in the locker room and we just really self-reflected on each other," Smart said after the Celtics responded with a 112-96 victory over the Orlando Magic at Boston's TD Garden on Sunday. "We asked each other, like I said, 'How do we want to end the season? How do we want to be remembered for this season?' Everybody agreed, this was a bad feeling and an ugly feeling that we are feeling and we don't want to feel like this.

"We don't want to look back on this season and be like, 'Damn, we could have did this.' We still have time. It's not a lot, the margin for it is closing, but we still have time to fix it, and that's what we are trying to do."

After lackluster losses to the Cleveland Cavaliers and Kings their prior two games, Boston looked much more like the team it is supposed to be Sunday, controlling the game throughout the second half. Boston shot 23-for-54 from 3-point range -- including Jaylen Brown going 10-for-18 from behind the arc en route to a game-high 34 points - while holding the Magic to 38% shooting overall.

Boston's topsy-turvy season has left it in a tie with the New York Knicks for sixth in the compressed Eastern Conference standings. The Celtics are just a game behind the fourth-place Atlanta Hawks, and are 3.5 games ahead of the Toronto Raptors in 11th -- showing how much things can change for better or worse in the span of a few games, depending on how a team is playing.

With the Celtics now in the midst of having their starting five healthy and playing together for an extended period for the first time this season, they are hoping that now is the time that they can start to figure things out after hovering around .500 all season -- far below the standard they've set for themselves in recent years, as they've made the Eastern Conference finals three of the past four years.

"We were focusing on what we want this season to be for us, what we want to leave behind this season," Smart said. "We have enough time to turn it around and that's all on us. We sat down and we understand we haven't been playing to the criteria that we expected and others expect us to. We are a young team and we are learning. The big thing and the biggest thing about growth is understanding and accepting the faults that you are wrong for, yourself, individually, and as a team.

"The talks that we had, we did that. We just tried to sit down and tried to figure it out and listen to one another to help, not ourselves but the team individually and everybody. Try to put everybody in the right position to succeed and we came out and it showed tonight and that's what we have to continue to keep going."

Boston will get a chance to see if there's a carryover Monday in Memphis, where the Celtics will begin a four-game road trip that includes games in Milwaukee against the Bucks on Wednesday and Friday.

It would help their cause if the Celtics can continue to shoot the way they did Sunday -- including Brown, in particular, who finished one short of Smart's franchise-record 11 3-pointers in a single game.

More than the shots he hit, however, Brown said it was just important for the Celtics to get the bad taste of the past few games out of their mouths before they head out on the road again and try to carry their momentum forward.

"It's a huge stepping stone for us," Brown said. "We've been in a little bit of a funk. To come in here, early game a little bit different from our routine, to come in and get a nice comfortable win is just good for our spirit. We know that we've underperformed, and we've kind of had that extra pressure on us just from everybody, from all the outside forces. So I just told our guys to just focus on us, man. Forget about what the media is saying, forget about what the fans are saying and just come out and play some good basketball and let's see where the chips fall, and hopefully we can do that more -- a lot more -- for the rest of the season.
