Sean Maitland is a surprise absentee from Gregor Townsend's 29-man squad for Scotland's final Six Nations game against France in Paris on Friday.

Glasgow Warriors team-mate Fraser Brown does not make the squad despite the hooker returning from injury for his club against Dragons on Sunday.

Exeter Chiefs lock Jonny Gray misses out again through injury.

Friday's game was postponed from Sunday 28 February after an outbreak of Covid-19 in the French camp, with head coach Fabien Galthie and 11 players testing positive for the virus.

It meant Scotland had to come to a special agreement with England's Premiership clubs for the release of players.

That limited the number of players they could call up and, although Maitland started against Italy and was available for selection from Saracensz\as, it was a selection decision that meant he was left out.

Townsend's side are looking for a victory that would take them above Ireland and Friday's visitors into second place in the Six Nations table.

France will snatch the title from Wales if they secure a winning margin of 21 points or more in a bonus-point win.

Maitland started at full-back in 52-10 rout of Italy at Murrayfield on Saturday, with captain Stuart Hogg moved to fly-half in the absence of Finn Russell.

However, Russell returns from his absence through concussion, while Hastings is free to play after his three-game ban for a red card picked up against Leinster in the Pro14 ended in time for him to start Glasgow's 26-17 defeat by Dragons.

Brown, who had been expected to miss the Six Nations campaign with a neck injury picked up in December also started that game.

Scotland squad

Forwards: Simon Berghan, David Cherry, Alex Craig, Matt Fagerson, Zander Fagerson, Grant Gilchrist, Nick Haining, Rob Harley, Oli Kebble, WP Nel, Jamie Ritchie, Sam Skinner, Grant Stewart, Rory Sutherland, George Turner, Hamish Watson.

Backs: Jamie Dobie, Darcy Graham, Chris Harris, Adam Hastings, Stuart Hogg (captain), Sam Johnson, Huw Jones, Rufus McLean, Duhan van der Merwe, Ali Price, Finn Russell, Scott Steele, Jaco van der Walt.

Bondurant School Evolves Into Radford Racing School

Published in Racing
Monday, 22 March 2021 10:09

CHANDLER, Ariz. – The storied Bondurant High Performance Driving School is writing a new chapter.

After purchasing the school in May of 2019, completing an extensive multi-million-dollar renovation and revamping its curriculum, the school’s owners – a small group of auto enthusiasts, collectors and school graduates – have renamed the facility the Radford Racing School.

The renaming marks the school’s new association with the team behind the Radford brand, a name legendary among auto enthusiasts for its coachbuilding legacy.

That team includes next-generation owners English television celebrity Ant Anstead, Formula One driving champion Jenson Button, car designer Mark Stubbs, and business partner Roger Behle.

The four are reviving the Radford story into a modern lifestyle brand that celebrates auto design and performance, high-performing driving and racing.

By taking on a heritage brand with forward momentum, owners of the school expect to continue to evolve it into an experience destination for international auto enthusiasts, everyday drivers, new drivers, racers, celebrities, and influencers.

The Radford Racing School is the Official High Performance Driving School of Dodge//SRT. Continuing as the school’s primary sponsors, Dodge//SRT provides a fleet of vehicles for driving instruction.

The drag racing course features the 840-horsepower Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, while other high-performance vehicles, including the Challenger SRT Hellcat, Charger SRT Hellcat and Durango SRT are just some of the options available for the on-track performance driving experience.

New Dodge//SRT owners are among the thousands of students who come to the school annually to learn how to achieve optimum performance of high-performance vehicles in a controlled environment.

In addition to the Dodge//SRT vehicles, the school features Ligier JS F4 open wheel vehicles, vintage Dodge Vipers, go karts, and cars used in its special forces, police, and military training. The Radford team will now build and test vehicles on the Radford Racing School track.

“We’ve rapidly progressed in enhancing and reintroducing this facility as the world’s premier experience for the next generation of drivers,” said Mike Kessler, general manager at the school.

Recent changes toward that goal include renovation and expansion, including the first resurfacing of the main track in 30 years; enhancements to the event center, visitor center, gift shop, student lounge, classrooms, skills pad and eagle’s nest viewing platform; diversification of the course offering by adding open wheel and drag racing courses, with new formula racing courses in development; and breaking new ground as the first school of its kind to offer professional drag racing instruction to the public and the chance to earn an NHRA license.

“To cap off these moves that broaden the appeal of the school while retaining its legendary reputation, we’re announcing the name change,” said Kessler.

He added the new brand retains the school’s nod to auto legends. Incorporating racing into the moniker represents the brand’s extension into the racing world, positioning the facility as a place for speed, professional race car instruction and experiences, in addition to world-class driving instruction.

“The racetrack is the perfect environment for building and testing Radford-built cars,” said Anstead.

“For a car to be truly great, it has to feel as good as it looks. It has to possess both style and substance in equal measures, and you can only achieve both through extensive testing and improvement and the track is the perfect place for this,” noted Button.

The Radford brand and school teams will collaborate on expanding the Radford brand into experiences, merchandise, branded content (a TV show is in the works), associations with celebrities and influencers, and more.

SCoNE Pairs With CRSA For July 3 Show In Vermont

Monday, 22 March 2021 10:28

SODUS, N.Y. – The future stars of sprint car racing in the Northeast are making headlines as they approach a season where dirt racing in the region gets back on track.

It was revealed recently that the CRSA Sprints will be heading to the far East this season as they travel for a July 3 event at Mike Bruno’s Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Vermont.

This will be a challenge event with the Sprint Cars of New England – a 360 sprint car organization that will visit Devil’s Bowl three times this season.

CRSA and SCoNE management teams are finalizing the rules and format for the unique event and will announce both in the very near future.

The event will tout an $8,000 purse, plus planned bonuses on the line for drivers making the tow. It also falls on the weekend celebrating Independence Day, which might be considered two-fold as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic slowly begins to subside.

“We are very excited about this collaboration with SCoNE and the CRSA Sprints for many reasons,” noted CRSA Series Director Mike Emhof. “Mike and Justin have put up a great purse for our drivers to compete alongside the SCoNE competitors and put on a show for the Devil’s Bowl faithful.

“It’s a win for CRSA, it’s a win for SCoNE and it will be a big win for the fans.”

The Independence Day Sprint Car Spectacular will also feature fan entertainment, as Devil’s Bowl Speedway plans a massive fireworks display to light up the New England skies.

The Super Gen Products CRSA Sprints tour schedule feature 16 races, while also being flanked by weekly Saturday night CRSA-sanctioned racing at Paul Cole’s Land of Legends Raceway.

Land of Legends recently announced a purse increase for the 305 sprint cars – now paying $500 to win, $300 for second, $220 for third and $125 just to take the green flag.

PARIS – Johnny Dumfries, who competed in 15 Formula One Grands Prix for Lotus in 1986 and won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, has died at the age of 62.

Dumfries, the 7th Marquess of Bute, whose real name was John Colum Crichton-Stuart, teamed with Ayrton Senna at Lotus in 1986. He earned a best finish of fifth that season during the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Following his lone Formula One season, Dumfries continued to race and earned the overall victory in the 1988 24 Hours of Le Mans with teammates Jan Lammers and Andy Wallace aboard a Jaguar XJR-9LM.

“The indomitable spirit and energy which Johnny brought to his life will be greatly missed, and the immense warmth and love with which he embraced his family,” Dumfries’ family said in a statement.

40th Southern Nationals Will Be Last At Atlanta Dragway

GLENDORA, Calif. – NHRA and Atlanta Dragway officials announced Monday that the upcoming NHRA Southern Nationals on April 30-May 2 on will be the final NHRA national event at the historic track.

“This year’s NHRA Southern Nationals is the capstone on four decades of racing at this track,” said Kasey Coler, NHRA Vice President of Track Management & Operations. “We know that our 40th will be a celebration of the track’s renowned drag racing history and will be an event fans won’t want to miss.”

The 318-acre Atlanta Dragway property was made available for purchase in December of last year, with JLL Capital Markets later selected to help NHRA officials sell the property.

Atlanta Dragway was one of three NHRA-owned properties on the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series schedule. The other two are Lucas Oil Raceway in Clermont, Ind., and Gainesville (Fla.) Raceway. NHRA also leases California’s Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

The sale will allow the NHRA to invest and upgrade the other properties it owns and operates. Atlanta Dragway has been owned by NHRA since 1993.

Atlanta Dragway will continue to host its weekly event schedule through the fall, including the Summit E.T. Bracket Series events and the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series National Open, May 21-23, along with the NHRA Division 2 Summit E.T. Series Finals, Sept. 30–Oct. 2.

The Rocket Mortgage Classic made its debut on the PGA Tour in 2019 and won the inaugural “Fair Way Award” for diversity and inclusion by leaning on minority-owned vendors at Detroit Golf Club and having a volunteer base that reflected the community.

Turns out that was just the start.

The tournament is launching “The John Shippen,” a four-day event in late June. It starts with a 36-hole tournament for the top Black golfers who can earn an exemption to the Rocket Mortgage Classic and to the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational on the LPGA Tour.

It concludes with a two-day sports business summit that offers paid internships and scholarships for students of color.

“Golf is a multi-billion dollar industry and it lacks diversity,” said Jason Langwell, executive director of the Rocket Mortgage Classic. “We’re building a platform, two events that show up on the intersection of diversity, inclusion and golf. We’re not only excited about that, we’re also excited to use the event to shine a light on the legacy and great untold story of John Shippen Jr.”

Shippen was the first Black to play in the U.S. Open in 1896 at Shinnecock Hills and the first American-born golf professional. Shippen, an assistant to Willie Dunn at Shinnecock, was encouraged to play in the second U.S. Open along with Oscar Bunn, a club caddie and member of the Shinnecock tribe.

English and Scottish players threatened to boycott if Shippen and Bunn were allowed to play until Theodore Havemeyer, the USGA president, said the championship would be played even if Shippen and Bunn were the only ones playing. Shippen was tied for the lead after the first day, only to make an 11 on the 13th hole to shoot 81. He tied for fifth, matching his best finish in his U.S. Open appearances.

Shippen later became a head pro until he retired in 1960.

“The John Shippen aims to address barriers that have prevented talented Black golfers and aspiring business professionals from realizing their dreams of playing professional golf or working in the golf industry,” said Jay Farner, the CEO of Rocket Mortgage.

Bryson DeChambeau is the defending champion at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, to be held July 1-4 after The John Shippen.

Still to be determined is the size of the field. Langwell said he has a dozen people on a selection committee to find the best Blacks, male and female. Regardless of how many players, he said The John Shippen would pay for all travel and lodging involved, another step to remove any barriers.

The men and women will play the South course at Detroit Golf Club on Sunday, June 27, and then move to the North course (used for the PGA Tour event) the following day. The male winner is exempt to the Rocket Mortgage Classic that week. The women will play as teams — foursomes and fourballs — because the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational is played under the same format. The LPGA Tour event is July 14-17 at Midland Country Club in Midland, Michigan.

Chicago-based Intersport worked with Sommer Woods to create the event. Woods is co-founder of Woods and Watts Effect, which specializes in diversity and inclusion. Woods also is vice chair for volunteers at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

“This event can change the world, starting with the world of golf,” Woods said.

Langwell said Rocket Mortgage would be a presenting sponsor of The John Shippen, which hopes to have six national sponsors. One is Trion Solutions, a minority-owned professional employer company.

The John Shippen is the latest development in a year filled with momentum in minority involvement.

The PGA Tour has made its TPC network available to the Advocates Pro Golf Association Tour, with the Farmers Insurance Open offering a spot to an APGA player. The Genesis Invitational at Riviera offers an exemption in the name of Charlie Sifford to a player with a minority background.

Langwell is equally excited about the business summit, conducted virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It will be open to high school and college students to hear about career opportunities and apply for internships and scholarships.

The entire event will be part of a one-hour special on CBS leading into the final round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

NYCFC acquires U.S. youth Gloster from PSV

New York City FC acquired defender Chris Gloster from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven, the club announced Monday.

The 20-year-old New Jersey native signed a deal through the 2023 season with an option to extend for two additional seasons.

- Beckham: Miami will attract stars like Ronaldo, Messi, Neymar
- Oral history of the USMNT's improbably 2000 Olympic run

NYCFC acquired his homegrown priority rights by sending $100,000 in general allocation money to the New York Red Bulls. The Red Bulls will receive additional money if Gloster reaches certain performance benchmarks.

"It's such an honor to be joining New York City FC," Gloster said in a team statement. "I know a lot about the club and it's a team with a good playing style that I feel I fit perfectly into. I'm glad to be back home and it feels amazing to have a team that is really invested in me. Every team that you go to, you learn something new. NYCFC has something great to offer and I hopefully will be able to do my best for this Club."

Gloster, who has been a regular in the United States youth setup, joined NYCFC in Florida for training camp last week. The team is scheduled to open the MLS regular season on April 17 at D.C. United.

Gloster competed in 22 matches for PSV Eindhoven's reserve team, Jong PSV, from 2019-20. Prior to his stint in the Netherlands, Gloster played with the German club Hannover 96 in 2018.

"Chris is a player we're very excited about joining NYCFC," said Ronny Deila, the club's head coach. "He's a highly regarded 20-year-old with a few seasons of experience in Europe at some really good clubs. I enjoy working with young players to help maximize their abilities and Chris is one who we think can come to us and grow into a really good player."
