Practice & Heat Races Added To Bristol Dirt Weekend

Wednesday, 24 February 2021 13:03

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Bristol Motor Speedway officials announced Wednesday that Bush’s Beans qualifying heat races will be conducted for both the NASCAR Cup Series and the Camping World Truck Series during Food City Dirt Race weekend.

In addition, a Bush’s Beans Practice Day has been added for March 26, following NASCAR’s release of its official event schedule for the March 26-28 weekend.

On Saturday, March 27, both series will hit the dirt during Bush’s Beans Qualifying Day.

Four 15-lap heat races in both the NASCAR Cup Series and Camping World Truck Series will be conducted to determine the starting lineups for each main race.

Bush’s Beans qualifying heat races for the Food City Dirt Race in the Cup Series will be held at 6, 6:15, 6:30 and 6:45 p.m.

The four Bush’s Beans qualifying heat races for the Pinty’s Truck Race on Dirt will be held at 4:30, 4:45, 5 and 5:15 p.m.

The Bush’s Beans qualifying heat races on Saturday will precede the Pinty’s Truck Race on Dirt, which will take the green flag at 8 p.m. ET.

Bush’s Beans Practice Day will take place Friday, March 26, and will feature two scheduled practice sessions for both the NASCAR Cup Series and the Camping World Truck Series.

As part of Bush’s Beans Practice Day, the hour-long Cup Series practices will be held at 4:05 p.m. and 6:35 p.m. Two hour-long practices also will be held for the Camping World Truck Series, at 3:05 p.m. and 5:35 p.m.

A limited number of socially-distanced grandstand seats along the BMS frontstretch will be allotted for spectators to purchase for Friday’s Bush’s Beans Practice Day at $15 each.

Saturday’s Bush’s Beans Qualifying heat races in the Cup Series will set the field for Sunday’s historic Food City Dirt Race, which takes the green flag at 3:30 p.m. ET.

The Food City Dirt Race is the first dirt race for the Cup Series in the sport’s modern era. The last time the Cup Series raced on a dirt surface was in September of 1970 at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds, won by Richard Petty.

Bush Brothers & Company, an East Tennessee based business, has been a BMS partner since 2015 and recently extended its multi-year agreement.

“We are thrilled to have Bush’s Beans as the entitlement sponsor for these important events that will set the racing lineups for the Food City Dirt Race and the Pinty’s Truck Race on Dirt,” said Jerry Caldwell, executive vice president and general manager, Bristol Motor Speedway. “Bush’s Beans Practice Day on Friday will allow the drivers in both the Cup Series and the Camping World Truck Series to sling some dirt and break in their machines on the dirt-covered high banks. On Saturday, fans will be treated to some intense 15-lap heat races in both series during Bush’s Beans Qualifying, which will set the starting grids for the Food City Dirt Race and the Pinty’s Truck Race on Dirt.”

“Bush’s Beans is excited to be a part of NASCAR’s dirt-track racing history while deepening its relationships with motorsports fans and the local community,” added Drew Everett, chairman of the board for Bush Brothers & Company. “Bristol is one of the greatest venues in sports and entertainment and the Food City Dirt Race weekend will be a memorable event for years to come.”

Thursday's Sharks-Golden Knights tilt postponed

Published in Hockey
Wednesday, 24 February 2021 13:07

San Jose's game against Vegas scheduled for Thursday night has been postponed after a Sharks player entered the NHL's COVID protocol.

It's the 36th NHL game this season to be postponed for virus-related issues and 40th counting the Texas snowstorm that affected Dallas.

The Sharks' facilities have been closed. The team canceled practice Wednesday but said that decision and the postponement "was made out of an abundance of caution."

The NHL had a season-low eight players on its COVID protocol list on Tuesday, five of them from Philadelphia. That's down from a season high of 59 just 11 days ago.

The Calgary Flames and Montreal Canadiens remain perfect so far this season, as neither team has had a player put on the list.

The St. Louis Blues and Toronto Maple Leafs each have had a player added to the COVID-19 list over the past few days, bringing the total number of players who have spent at least one day on it to 126.

Both the Sharks and Golden Knights will eventually need that game in their respective playoff pushes. Entering Wednesday, Vegas, with 23 points, wasin first place in the West Division, while San Jose, with 16 points, was just three points out of the No. 4 spot.

L.A. County Sheriff: Tiger Woods not expected to face charges

Published in Golf
Wednesday, 24 February 2021 06:39

Tiger Woods is not expected to face any charges in relation to his single-car rollover accident Tuesday, Los Angeles County  Sheriff Alex Villanueva said.

Villanueva provided an update on Wednesday from his office, stating, “We don’t contemplate any charges whatsoever in this crash. This remains an accident. Accident is not a crime. They do happen, unfortunately.”

Villanueva reiterated that there was no reason to expect alcohol or drugs played a factor in the crash and that no blood samples were drawn by investigators. If the hospital where Woods is being treated does a toxicology report, Villanueva said his department would need a search warrant in order to access it.

Dr. John Torres, NBC News’ medical correspondent, joined “Golf Today” to provide insight into Tiger's surgery and possible recovery.

A search warrant would also be needed to access Woods’ phone records, the sheriff added, if investigators wanted to see if Woods might have been distracted by phone use. The initial officer on site, Sheriff's deputy Carlos Gonzalez, is filing the traffic report, according to Villanueva, and “has all the information he needs from Mr. Woods.”

The sheriff added that they have yet to determine if the 2021 Genesis SUV was equipped with a black box which might indicate the rate of speed at which Woods was travelling at the time of the crash. He also stated that there have been 13 accidents, including four injuries over the last 14 months along the stretch of road where Woods' incident occurred.

Why Rory McIlroy wasn't surprised that he missed the cut last week

Published in Golf
Wednesday, 24 February 2021 06:47

BRADENTON, Fla. – Rory McIlroy wasn’t all that surprised that his PGA Tour-leading consecutive cuts made streak came to an end last week at the Genesis Invitational.

“This is going to sound really weird,” he said Wednesday, “that I worked so hard the week before Riviera in that week off, but I felt so unprepared to play.”

It’s the same technical problem that has plagued McIlroy for the past few weeks: The club gets too far behind him on the way back and across the line at the top, then, instead of having the club back in front of him on the downswing, he’s too steep. That results in pulls and spinny cuts, which aren’t McIlroy’s typical mistakes.

“It’s just a very different pattern than what I’m used to,” he said, “so I’m always fighting it and I’m trying to see shots that are going against my natural way of playing. So, sort of stuck between that at the minute.”

Despite posting three consecutive finishes inside the top 20 to start the new year, including a 54-hole lead at the European Tour’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, McIlroy pounded balls for several hours each day in the week leading up to the Genesis.

“But I didn’t play golf,” he said. “Didn’t chip. Didn’t putt. Didn’t do any of the things you need to do to shoot scores.

“So, even though I worked hard and worked on some stuff, I feel like it’s sort of like clockwork – I have these weeks where I want to work on some things and fix some things and I try to cram everything into the space of a week, when it’s probably something that should take two or three months to iron out. So I went to Riviera after feeling like I worked hard, but was completely unprepared because I had sort of neglected all other aspects of the game.”

His head spinning with swing thoughts, McIlroy found himself spending five to 10 seconds longer over the ball than normal. “You can’t play golf like that,” he said. Not surprisingly, he shot rounds of 73-76 on a very demanding track and missed the cut – his first in his past 26 Tour starts, dating to the 2019 Open Championship.

Typically, that isn’t much cause for concern. In the first event following his last five missed cuts, McIlroy has two wins in addition to finishes of second, fourth and 12th.

Even in a no-cut tournament here at the World Golf Championships-Workday Championship at The Concession, McIlroy isn’t sure he’ll be able to produce that type of performance this week.

“I need to play with more freedom and I need to be able to swing away,” he said. “It’s sort of like: Do the work on the range and just trust that the more work you do, the more that it’s just going to naturally find its way in there.”

KHL: Not aware of any incident involving Panarin

Published in Breaking News
Wednesday, 24 February 2021 12:56

The Kontinental Hockey League says it has "not been aware of or received a complaint in relation to any incident involving Artemi Panarin in December 2011."

In a statement to ESPN, the KHL said if the league did receive any complaint, it would have investigated "as we take any allegations of misconduct incredibly seriously."

Two days ago, Panarin took a leave of absence from the New York Rangers, following an allegation from one of his former KHL coaches, Andrei Nazarov.

Nazarov, the former Vityaz coach, told a Russian newspaper that while his team was on a road trip to Riga, Latvia, in 2011, Panarin got into a physical altercation with an 18-year-old woman. In his interview, Nazarov said Panarin "sent her to the floor with several powerful blows." He also said a criminal case was opened but local police were paid 40,000 Euros to cover it up.

Panarin, 29, remains at home in Connecticut, according to sources, and doesn't have any plans to return to Russia right now. There is no timetable for his return to the Rangers, who face the Flyers Wednesday night in Philadelphia, though he is being paid through his leave.

The Rangers organization remains steadfast in its support for the star winger -- a runner-up for the Hart Trophy as league MVP last season -- whom they say is "shaken and concerned" by the allegations. In a statement Monday, the Rangers called Nazarov's claims "clearly an intimidation tactic being used against (Panarin) for being outspoken on recent political events."

Since Panarin went on leave, there has been no corroborating evidence, court or police records to support Nazarov's allegations, nor has a victim come forward.

ESPN spoke with two of Panarin's teammates from the 2011 Vityaz team. Kip Brennan said he didn't "hear or know of anything like that happening." Jon Mirasty, who called Nazarov a "good guy" and said he enjoyed playing for the coach, was also skeptical.

"I barely think anything like that would've happened and I'm sure I would've heard about it," Mirasty said. "And I don't understand why it would be brought up 10 years later. Sounds like a hoax to me."

Another teammate, Mikhail Ansin, told Russian outlet Sports-Express on Wednesday that there was an incident in Riga, Latvia, in 2011 involving Panarin, but it did not play out how Nazarov depicted. Ansin said the incident took place at a karaoke bar.

"Artemi didn't beat anyone, maybe pushed one girl a little bit, nothing more," Ansin told Sports-Express. Ansin also said police came to the team hotel, but left after determining the incident did not warrant charges.

Ansin also disputed the claim about police being paid off, saying the players at the time didn't have that type of money.

The NHL is looking into the allegations, according to deputy commissioner Bill Daly. The NHL is the only of the four major North American professional sports leagues without a specific domestic violence policy, handling cases on an individual basis. It would be uncharacteristic of the NHL to punish Panarin without corroborating evidence, police or court records, or a victim coming forward.

It is unclear what prompted Nazarov to speak out now. The Rangers believe his comments are in response to Panarin's Instagram post last month, where he posted support for Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. Panarin has previously been outspoken about political issues in his home country, and has been critical of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the past. Nazarov is a known supporter of Putin.

Nazarov, who played in 571 NHL games, is not currently coaching a team. He last worked with a KHL club in 2018.

Panarin, who signed an $81.5 million, seven-year contract with New York in 2019, typically spends his offseasons in Russia and still has family there, including his grandparents.

It has been a dramatic season for the Rangers. The team placed defenseman Tony DeAngelo on waivers last month -- and have ordered him to stay at home until they can find a trade partner -- after he got into a physical altercation with goalie Alexandar Gerogiev following a loss.

"I jokingly said to [rookie] Alexis [Lafrenière] that he's seen more -- for lack of a better term -- drama and just generally wild, unorthodox things happening in the first two months of the season than I've experienced over the last decade or so," veteran Chris Kreider said Tuesday. "I guess that's just the state of the world. It's been strange."

Sheriff: Tiger not drunk, crash 'purely' accident

Published in Breaking News
Wednesday, 24 February 2021 12:56

The Los Angeles County sheriff says Tiger Woods was "not drunk" during the rollover that seriously injured the golf superstar Tuesday, saying the single-vehicle crash was "purely an accident."

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said his department would not be filing any charges against Woods pertaining to the crash near the border of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes, about 30 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.

Villanueva said the department is considering it an accident, which could lead to a misdemeanor at most.

"He was not drunk," Villanueva said Wednesday on Instagram Live. "We can throw that one out."

As part of a statement on Woods' official Twitter account, Dr. Anish Mahajan of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center said in part that Woods had suffered multiple "open fractures" to his lower right leg, and he had a rod placed in his tibia and screws and pins inserted in his foot and ankle during emergency surgery.

Woods, 45, was "awake, responsive, and recovering in his hospital room," according to another part of the statement.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
