Cheddar’s Teams Up With Kaulig & Burton

Published in Racing
Wednesday, 24 February 2021 09:50

LEXINGTON, N.C. — Kaulig Racing will team with Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen for two races on the No. 10 Chevrolet, piloted by Jeb Burton, in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

Burton, who has finished fourth and fifth in his first two races as a full-time NXS driver, is set to drive the No. 10 Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen Chevrolet beginning at Florida’s Homestead-Miami Speedway for the Contender Boats 250 Saturday, followed by the Wawa 250 at Daytona International Speedway in August.

Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen is a homestyle, casual dining restaurant. Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen will be the third new partner Kaulig Racing has added to its portfolio for the NXS season and when not a primary, will act as an associate partner for the remainder of the season.

“Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen is thrilled to be partnering with a dedicated team like Kaulig Racing and driver Jeb Burton for his first full-time Xfinity Series season,” said John Wilkerson, president of Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen. “From my first conversation with Jeb, I have been impressed by his genuine character and strong work ethic. It closely aligns with the way we operate at Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen—applying hard work to serve handmade quality food at great prices.”

BRADENTON, Fla. – PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan was on a Microsoft Teams call when he received a phone call with news about a serious car crash involving the circuit’s biggest star, Tiger Woods.

“I was shocked,” Monahan said Wednesday. “I had to sit down and ask the same question I had asked a second time because I wasn’t sure I completely heard what I was being told.”

Monahan quickly got in touch with Woods’ agent, Mark Steinberg, who relayed what they knew at the time: That Woods was involved in a single-car rollover accident in Los Angeles early Tuesday morning, and that the injuries that Woods had sustained, though serious, were non-life-threatening.

“For a lot of us there was a period where we didn’t know,” Monahan said. “You’re thinking a lot of different things, and some of them are pretty scary to think about.”

Dr. John Torres, NBC News’ medical correspondent, joined “Golf Today” to provide insight into Tiger's surgery and possible recovery.

Through his official Twitter account Woods released a statement at 12:30 a.m. ET Wednesday detailing his surgical procedure, which included a shattered right leg and ankle that needed a rod, screws and pins to be stabilized. Woods is currently “awake, responsive and recovering” at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center outside Los Angeles.

When he heard about the extent of Woods’ injuries, Monahan said, “I said a couple prayers, and I knew it was a different day, and this day is all going to be about being thankful and grateful that Tiger’s going to be OK. That’s a lot of progress in a short amount of time based on where we all were when we first heard it.”

Monahan was on-site Wednesday at the World Golf Championships-Workday Championship at The Concession, where he was meeting with players and tournament officials.

Monahan became emotional when talking about Woods’ impact over the past 25 years. Given Woods’ age (45) and the severity of his latest injuries, Monahan was asked whether it was too soon to contemplate what life might be like on Tour without Woods.

“The only thing that really matters now is his well-being, his recovery, his family, the level of support that we provide to him,” Monahan said. “When Tiger wants to talk about golf, we’ll talk about golf, but I think right now the entirety of our efforts needs to be around the support.”

Orlando City player charged with sexual assault

Published in Soccer
Wednesday, 24 February 2021 09:36

A player for Orlando City SC and his brother are accused of sexually assaulting a woman, sheriff's investigators said.

Jonathan Suarez-Cortes, 24, was arrested Tuesday night near Orlando, the Osceola County Sheriff's Office said in a statement posted on Twitter.

The team said in a statement officials learned of its player's arrest late Tuesday and are gathering more information.

"No further comment will be provided by the club until additional investigation of the alleged incident is complete,'' the statement said.

Sheriff's investigators said the deputies responded on Monday afternoon after a woman said she had been sexually assaulted by two men the previous afternoon.

A special investigations detective took over the case and authorities were able to identify Jonathan Suarez-Cortes and his brother Rafael Suarez Jr. as suspects, the sheriff's office said.

Suarez-Cortes, 24, is a defender for Orlando City, acquired on loan from Queretaro FC earlier this month, according to the team's roster. The men are being held in the Osceola County Jail. Lawyers for them were not available on jail records.

South Africa are hopeful of playing against India "a number of times" in the next cycle of bilateral series, and several exchanges between the two sides are on the verge of being signed off, according to Cricket South Africa's director of cricket, Graeme Smith.

Speaking on TV commentary during the domestic T20 cup, Smith outlined a busy international programme after this year's IPL, while continuing to acknowledge the fallout from the indefinitely postponed three-Test series against Australia, which was scheduled for March.

"Myself and Sourav [Ganguly, the BCCI president] go a long way back and we've had a number of conversations," Smith said. "India have been very supportive of us. Hopefully, in the next cycle we will have a number of tours against India that are actually pretty close to being finalised.

"Tom Harrison and the ECB have been brilliant as well. Even the handling of the England situation [when England left South Africa in December without playing three ODIs on their white-ball tour] was good. That has already been rescheduled. There has been a joint resolution and understanding of that.

"But Australia have been the one that has stood out in terms of the difficulties, and we never found the same sense of working together as we did with the others. We've also got to ask some hard questions of them and challenge them as well. That's important for world cricket."

CSA has lodged a formal complaint with the ICC, asking the game's global governing body's dispute resolution committee to consider whether Australia's decision not to tour South Africa constituted unacceptable non-compliance of the FTP and the World Test Championship terms. "Even if we don't win that - because I don't think there is any precedent for it - the message is loud and clear," Smith said.

That message is multifold as South Africa seek financial compensation, assurances that countries would be obliged to fulfil their fixtures and not unilaterally pull out, to avoid the big three of India, England and Australia monopolising the international calendar, and for all ICC members to work together to get as much cricket played as possible.

"Our teams are going to be very busy post IPL to build up to the T20 World Cup and identify the right squad"
Graeme Smith

"Each country is facing different challenges. It's important that the members get together and support each other, and try and find ways to get as much done as we can," Smith said. "That added to the disappointment of Australia. So far, everyone we have worked with has had that mindset and understood that, and my sense is that Australia didn't. That's what let us down. You work with members to try and find the safest way to get cricket played. It's become a collaborative approach with the medical teams and operations teams and how finances will work."

South Africa were to play India in March 2020, but had to return home after only one ODI of a three-match series, as countries around the world went into lockdown because of Covid-19. But they are scheduled to host India for three Tests in the 2021-22 summer.

Smith further said that India apart, South Africa are currently in talks with West Indies and Sri Lanka to play winter tours in those countries before the T20 World Cup. "Our teams are going to be very busy post IPL to build up to the T20 World Cup and identify the right squad," he said.

Before the IPL, South Africa would be hosting Pakistan for three ODIs and four T20Is between April 2 and 16, with Smith hoping that spectators would be allowed into grounds to send off this summer on a celebratory note. "We are working closely with the government. When Pakistan come, we'd love to have some element of fans in the stadium," he said.

South Africa are currently on Level 3 of a five-stage lockdown - with Level 5 being the strictest - and most sectors of the economy are open. Current restrictions include an 11pm curfew and a ban on fans in stadiums but with the Covid-19 infection rate declining, there is a possibility that by April, there will be a further easing of measures to stop the spread of Covid-19.

The ongoing domestic T20 tournament is being played behind closed doors and in a bio-secure environment in Durban, but the concluding stages of the first-class competition - which will take place next month - will not be played in a bubble. That may be an indication that conditions are becoming safer for playing sport at multiple locations and with fewer limits on player movements.

All nationally contracted players are obliged to make themselves available for these domestic matches as South Africa aim to accelerate their rebuilding process. "The goal is to get cricket played, to get ourselves moving forward," Smith said. "We do need to improve our cricket standards, so these are an important four to five weeks of cricket for us."

Mohammad Hafeez turns down Category C PCB contract

Published in Cricket
Wednesday, 24 February 2021 09:18

Mohammad Hafeez has rejected a Category C PCB contract. ESPNcricinfo understands Hafeez's reason for declining the deal is that he is unhappy at being offered the lowest grade of contract.

While Hafeez has been without a central contract since 2019, in 2020 he was offered Category A match fees for any game he played for Pakistan during the year, as a special case given his seniority.

He has since gone on to reinvent himself in T20Is, and is second only to Dawid Malan in terms of runs scored in the format in the last 12 months: 331 to the Englishman's 386, from one fewer innings.

Mohammad Rizwan, who is in prime form, has been elevated to the top category from Category B. Fawad Alam, who had an A+ category contract with his domestic team - Sindh - has been rewarded for a stellar return to the Test side with a Category C central contract.

Following a PCB review of performances, these three players were offered the upgrade in advance of the full list of central contracts, that will be announced later this year. The current contracts run till June 30. Both Rizwan and Alam accepted the offers, but Hafeez - now a T20I specialist - "politely turned down" the offer.

"The decision to promote the players was made during a meeting with the chair of the selection committee, Mohammad Wasim, while we were reviewing player performances in the 2020-21 season and discussing the upcoming commitments," Wasim Khan, the PCB chief executive, said in a statement. "It was agreed during the meeting that three players were the most deserving and outstanding performers in the season to date and, as such, they needed to be rewarded now instead of waiting for the time when PCB Central Contract List for 2021-22 will be reviewed and announced.

"However, Mohammad Hafeez declined the reward and, while I am disappointed, I fully respect his decision. He wants to wait for the PCB central contract 2021-22 list, which he is fully entitled to. Hafeez has been one of our star performers of the season and we hope he will carry the form and momentum to Africa. I am sure this merit and performance-based decision will once again send out a loud and clear message to all professional cricketers that the PCB will not only recognise, appreciate and acknowledge their performances and achievements, but will also reward them so that they can strive to do better next time."

Alam has scored 320 runs in six Tests since his comeback in August 2020, including centuries in New Zealand and at home against South Africa, the first one even earning him the PCB Individual Performance of 2020 award. As for Rizwan, he moved up to B last year after replacing Sarfaraz Ahmed as the country's leading wicketkeeper-batsman and, in the last nine months, he has become Pakistan's leading scorer in Tests with 529 runs in seven matches at an average of 52.90. He has also been elevated to vice-captaincy in Test cricket.

Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Amir remain out of the list, while Ahmed is in Category B, Shaheen Afridi and Azhar Ali have moved from B to A, joining Azam in the top category for PKR 1.1 million (US$ 7000 approx.).

The PCB has also introduced a new 'emerging' category for three upcoming players - Haider Ali, Mohammad Hasnain and Haris Rauf - while Naseem Shah earned a maiden Category C contract.

Pink-ball beauty is in the eye of the beholder

Stumps: India 99 for 3 (Rohit 57*, Rahane 1*, Leach 2-27) trail England 112 (Crawley 53, Patel 6-38, Ashwin 3-26) by 13 runs

What do you see when you look at a pink ball? As Joe Root had indicated on the eve of the Ahmedabad Test, there's not a lot of data to back up any preconceptions about day-night Test cricket. Therefore, both sets of players came into this contest at perfect liberty to see in the conditions whatever they so chose.

Ben Stokes, for England's part, had been "licking his lips" in anticipation of a seam-dominated joust in what he clearly envisaged being the Trent Bridge of the East. And sure enough, England's optimistic surge continued on the morning of the match, as James Anderson and Stuart Broad were thrown together for one last heist, like the cast of Ocean's 14, before Root won a crucial toss and handed his batsmen the same opportunity that they had seized upon in the first Test - a chance to post a gargantuan first innings and dominate the match narrative through sheer weight of runs.

Well, so much for the best-laid plans and all that. Unfortunately for England's dreamers, India saw clean through the optics, and the lacquer, and all the paraphernalia that comes with this most fundamental switch of the sport's basics. Instead they looked directly at another dry, dusty red-earthed deck, and opened their ears to the sweet music of 50,000 passionate fans at the newly minted Narendra Modi stadium - which, even when half full, was still more populated than almost any ground bar the MCG.

The upshot was an ardour-dousing day of one-sided dominance - one that has emphatically killed off any hopes of Root's men emulating those of Sir Alastair Cook nine years ago, and inflicting on India a rare home series defeat. The late dismissal of Virat Kohli was a boost to their hopes of limiting their deficit but by that stage Rohit Sharma was rumbling on towards another century - very different, but no less emphatic, to the game-breaker he produced on the first day of the previous Test.

And though Anderson and Broad proved predictably parsimonious in their combined analysis of 15-7-27-0, they had been fighting the rising tide from their opening spells after England's catastrophic batting malfunction had surrendered any right to set the match agenda. Instead, England's attentions began to stray to factors beyond their control - most notably, the state of the footmarks that were forming big cavities for their heavy-limbed seamers, and the state of the TV umpiring, which reprieved each of India's openers on evidence that may have been correct but was less-than-conclusive, much to Root's mounting fury.

Instead, the mastery of R Ashwin - in his 77th Test and now odds-on to reach 400 wickets before the match is done - was matched for the second Test in a row by the eager apprenticeship of Axar Patel, who proved his debut in Chennai had been no fluke by improving on his Test-best figures with a remarkable haul of 6 for 38 in 21.4 overs.

Between them, they harvested the doubts that still lingered from that last Test, and instigated a collapse that was remarkable even by the standards of England's last visit to India in 2016-17.

From a pre-lunch scoreline of 74 for 2, with Zak Crawley batting with uncommon poise and panache, England squandered their last eight wickets for 38 in 17 overs - almost universally spooked by the fear of what might have been, rather than by any unplayability on the part of the balls that did them in.

Between them the spinners accounted for nine of England's ten all told - the exception being Dom Sibley, who flinched to slip in the second over for a duck to give Ishant Sharma a souvenir from his 100th Test appearance. On the evidence of the rest of the innings, Ishant is unlikely to be over-worked in the next few days.

Despite some unconventional seam movement for Jasprit Bumrah in particular, India turned to spin as early as the seventh over - and were not made to wait for vindication. Jonny Bairstow, hailed as England's missing link in Chennai despite a top score of 47 in his two appearances at No. 3 in Sri Lanka, showed that visualisation hadn't been a big part of his post rest-and-rotation break. He poked uncertainly at his first ball from Axar and was slammed on the knee-roll by the ball that didn't turn - his wasteful use of the review merely compounding his confusion.

That brought Root to the middle several hours earlier than he would have liked - although in his earliest overs, he was at least shielded by an extraordinary flurry from Crawley at the other end. It would prove all too brief in the end, but while it lasted, Crawley's timing was stunning - right from his very first scoring shot, a non-committal block that pinged through long-on off Bumrah.

He continued in the same vein en route to a 68-ball fifty, replete with drives and clips whenever seamer and spinner alike over-pitched. And just as Rohit had transcended the conditions in Chennai through his uncompromising weight of stroke, so Crawley appeared to be providing the forward momentum that England needed to post a competitive total. So long as he endured, and enabled Root to grow into his day's work, the chance was there to make a good toss count.

But then, on 17, Root made a fatal misjudgement - Ashwin's brilliance is through the air every bit as much off the pitch, and having given the impression in his first three Tests of the winter that he was infallible to the trickery of all spinners, Root chose to slide onto the back foot to a ball that just kept hanging in the air longer than he had anticipated, and was pinned in front of middle and leg as the ball pitched and gripped. Tellingly, he had barely unfurled his single sweep in the course of his 37-ball stay.

Moments earlier, England seemed to be set to claim the morning spoils. Instead, their mood was wrecked three overs later, as Crawley succumbed to the best double-whammy of the day. Two deliveries from Axar, pitching in almost identical spots - the first ripped venomously past the outside edge; the second kissed straight on through off the deck, into the knee-roll, to leave England on 80 for 4 and with two new batsmen at the crease.

The first of those, Ollie Pope, didn't even see out the over after lunch, as he too was done in by Ashwin's flight, and beaten around the outside edge by another ball that skipped on through to hit off stump. And one over later, Stokes surrendered on the back foot to Axar, pinned in front of off as he rocked back and simply missed with a defensive poke. At Chennai, he'd been launching such deliveries over midwicket in a "get them before they get you" mindset, but here he felt obliged to drop anchor for the cause, to no avail.

The rest were rounded up with minimal fuss - Ben Foakes the last to go for a becalmed 12 from 58 balls as he took missed a straight one, bowled by Axar as he rocked back to cut and missed. In mitigation, the timing of their final collapse - an hour into the afternoon session - did mean that England would be bowling as the witching hour set in, but it was going to take a bout of necromancy from Anderson and Broad to revive England from this point.

Suffice to say, it did not transpire. Both men were promoted to the new ball ahead of Archer - which was food for thought in itself after the manner in which he had roughed up Rohit in the first innings at Chennai - but in their familiar, self-preservatory fashion, both men dragged their lengths back, almost subconsciously, to avoid being driven, rather than attack from the outset in the do-or-die manner that the moment required.

Shubman Gill, for his part, did his utmost to ride out the threat - he took 27 balls to score his first run, by which stage he had been reprieved by the third umpire after Stokes at second slip failed to close his fingers around a low edge off Broad. Archer eventually scalped him with the short ball, but it was too little too late for England's hopes - which were perhaps best summed up by Pope's eventful few minutes in the field in the closing overs.

One moment, he came close to pulling off a world-class one-handed take at short leg as he pre-meditated Rohit's sweep and launched himself to his right. The next, no doubt still brooding on the one that got away, he dropped Kohli at slip off the luckless Anderson, who still hasn't claimed the main man's wicket for four years. On this evidence, he might not get another opportunity before this contest is done and dusted.

Fury to fight twice in '21, hoping for Joshua

Published in Breaking News
Wednesday, 24 February 2021 09:26

WBC heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury says he will absolutely fight twice in 2021, regardless of whether a megafight against Anthony Joshua comes together.

Fury (30-0-1, 21 KOs) has not stepped into the ring for over a year now, as the anniversary of his sensational knockout of Deontay Wilder passed on Monday. The 32-year-old told ESPN on Wednesday that he is committed to fighting twice in 2021, after a potential trilogy bout against Wilder in December fell through.

"It was just a big mess-up," said Fury, on the Wilder trilogy. "I should have boxed, because I've been so inactive. I've been out for over a year. By the time I fight again, looking at maybe June if this Joshua fight happens, that will be a year and six months out of the ring, which is not ideal preparation for any superfight."

A matchup between Fury and Joshua (24-1, 22 KOs), who holds the WBA, WBO and IBF titles, would be a blockbuster event. Although talks have been trending in the right direction, according to recent comments from Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn, Fury said he's not convinced yet that the fight will happen, even though the two sides continue to negotiate.

"They've had a full year to try and make this fight happen," Fury said. "Since the last Wilder fight, even before the Wilder fight, they were talking about a fight potentially between me and Joshua. They've had a full year to make something happen, and it hasn't happened as of yet. It is what it is. We're no further forward today than we were a year ago.

"The way [COVID-19] is at the moment, I don't think [negotiations] got much to do with the fighters. It's to do with the venue, date, place, site fees. It's to do with everything but the fight itself."

Whether it's in June or at a later date, Fury said the Joshua fight will come together at some point. Either way, he's looking forward to fighting twice in 2021, as 2020 was the first year he returned to the sport after a break in 2018 in which he failed to fight more than once.

"If that fight doesn't happen this summer, it's got to happen sooner or later," Fury said. "But Top Rank has to give me two fights this year. I will fight two times on [Top Rank network partner] ESPN. I don't care who it is. If it's not Joshua, we're looking to fight in April or early May, and the end of the year. If it is Joshua, then June and the end of the year. Bang, bang. So, 2021 is looking bright."

Prospect says M's manipulating his service time

Published in Baseball
Wednesday, 24 February 2021 09:22

Outfielder Jarred Kelenic, a top prospect for the Seattle Mariners, says he's convinced that his service time is being manipulated by the team based on comments from former team president and CEO Kevin Mather that have drawn the ire of the MLBPA.

Among multiple controversial comments made in an online video that led to his resignation, Mather divulged information about contract negotiations with Kelenic, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2018 amateur draft, to a Bellevue, Washington, Rotary Club on Feb. 5. In the video, Mather said neither Kelenic nor pitcher Logan Gilbert would be with the major league club on Opening Day as a way to keep club control for longer.

"Money shouldn't determine when a player is called up to the big leagues,'' Kelenic told USA Today on Tuesday. "This should be an exciting time for baseball. We had such a negative year with COVID and everything shutting down. This is what we've been waiting for. Now, the day before spring training, this is what I have to deal with."

Kelenic and one of his agents, Brodie Scoffield, told USA Today that it was "crystal clear" that the Mariners' decision to not call him up to the majors in 2020 was based on service time after he turned down a guaranteed contract in 2019.

"It wasn't just communicated one time to me. It was told to me several times," Kelenic told USA Today. "That's the God's honest truth. It got old. ...

"I was extremely disappointed. I worked extremely hard all offseason. And last year, here you have a team that is one game out of the playoffs going into the last weeks of the season. I know for a fact I could have helped that team out. Not just me, but there are other guys who could have helped that team out. Not to be given that opportunity was so beyond frustrating. I feel that guys should be rewarded for their play, and have the best guys on the field, especially when you talk about a team that hasn't gone to the playoffs in 20 years, and your best prospects are just sitting there watching.''

Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto, trying to do damage control in the wake of Mather's comments, personally apologized to Kelenic and then addressed all players with an apology Monday.

"Strange," Kelenic told USA Today about how Dipoto's message was received by players. "It was literally like someone farted in church. That is the exact expression on everybody's face."

Despite the apology, Dipoto denied that the Mariners were manipulating Kelenic's service time.

"I'm not sure how you construe a service-time manipulation with a 21-year-old player who has played [21] games above A-ball and has not yet achieved 800 plate appearances as a professional player,'' Dipoto told reporters on a Zoom call. "That would be an unprecedented run to the big leagues that hasn't happened in three decades.

"While Jarred is a wildly talented player, we do want to make sure that he has checked off the boxes in development because it's incumbent on us, not just for the good of the Mariners, but for the benefit of Jarred Kelenic, to make sure he has been fully developed.''

Scoffield, however, says there's more than enough evidence now to prove that wrong.

"This was always an open secret in baseball,'' Scoffield told USA Today. "Now we have a club official on video proving it.''

Twins' top prospect Lewis to miss 2021 season

Published in Baseball
Wednesday, 24 February 2021 09:15

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Minnesota Twins shortstop Royce Lewis, considered the organization's top prospect, has a torn ACL in his right knee that will sideline him for the 2021 season.

President of baseball operations Derek Falvey said Wednesday that Lewis was diagnosed with the injury during physical exams upon reporting to spring training. The 21-year-old Lewis, the first overall pick in the 2017 amateur draft, will have reconstructive surgery Friday in Minnesota before returning to camp to begin a rehabilitation process of nine to 12 months.

Lewis recently was ranked by ESPN's Kiley McDaniel as the top prospect in Minnesota's system and the No. 15 overall prospect in baseball. He finished the 2019 season at Double-A.

Because the coronavirus pandemic wiped out all minor league action in 2020, Lewis will go more than two full years without a game. The Twins signed Andrelton Simmons to play shortstop this season, and Lewis was not expected to be in the majors in 2021.

Lewis told the team he first noticed discomfort in the knee after lateral running drills this month as part of his training regimen. Then, during the winter storms that recently hit Texas, Lewis slipped on ice in the Dallas area where he lives and experienced further soreness. The Twins were unable to determine exactly how or when the ligament was torn.

"He's got a smile on his face, knows he's going to have a rehab year ahead, knows he's going to have to put in a lot of work, but he's prepared and ready to do that," Falvey said, "and I know he's looking forward to getting back on the field."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

White Sox star Abreu tests positive for COVID-19

Published in Baseball
Wednesday, 24 February 2021 09:31

Chicago White Sox star first baseman Jose Abreu has tested positive for COVID-19 and will be away from the club for the next several days.

White Sox general manager Rick Hahn announced Wednesday that Abreu, the reigning American League MVP, is "completely asymptomatic" and "frustrated."

Hahn said that Abreu believes he "contracted a mild case" of the coronavirus last month, a belief that is "reinforced by the presence of COVID antibodies in additional testing."

"Other than being frustrated, Jose feels great and, like the rest of us, is looking forward to when he rejoins the club in the not too distant future," Hahn said.

Abreu, 34, is entering his eighth season with the White Sox and is expected to be the centerpiece of Chicago's powerful lineup.

The three-time All-Star led the White Sox to their first postseason appearance since 2008 last season, when he batted .317 with 19 home runs and led the majors with 60 RBIs.
