Five-star Spezia stun Serie A leaders AC Milan

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 13 February 2021 15:08

Spezia felled another Serie A giant as they shocked league leaders AC Milan with a dominant display in a 2-0 victory on Saturday.

Having already beaten AS Roma in the Coppa Italia and Napoli in the league since the turn of the year, Spezia, making their Serie A debut this season, scored twice through Giulio Maggiore and Simone Bastoni, both in the second half, to seal a surprise success.

Milan never got going and finished the match without having had a shot on target, while being completely outplayed by their opponents.

Spezia saw out the win with ease to move up to 14th in the standings on 24 points, with Milan facing the prospect of losing top spot to rivals Inter Milan, should Antonio Conte's side beat Lazio on Sunday.

"I would never have imagined scoring against Milan, not even in my dreams," Bastoni told DAZN.

"We played a perfect match. If we continue to play so well we can have more days like this."

It has been quite the week for Spezia, who were taken over by an American consortium on Thursday, and celebrated by putting Milan to the sword.

Milan were off colour in the first half, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic cutting a frustrated figure at the service he was getting, and even with five second-half substitutions, chances remained few and far between for the visitors after the break.

Captain Maggiore finished off a fine move to give the hosts a deserved lead in the 56th minute, before Bastoni arrowed a fantastic second into the top corner 11 minutes later to spark jubilant scenes on the home bench.

Spezia have now picked up more Serie A points against sides currently in the top half of the table (13) than against teams in the bottom half.

For Milan, looking for their first Scudetto in a decade, the pressure is now on for them to respond in next weekend's crucial Milan derby clash at the San Siro.

In a former life, Jonny May's try against Italy in the Six Nations on Saturday would have been the first topic of post-match discussions in pubs all across England.

The first thing to enjoy was the fact that, in the millisecond before he jumped, it looked as though there was no way through.

Then it was all about the leap - surely of Olympic high jump proportions - and the slow-motion replay showing Italy wing Luca Sperandio's arms closing on thin air.

And then came the touchdown, May showing the athletic prowess of the NFL's finest as he managed to get the ball on the floor before his legs landed in touch.

It was an acrobatic moment that should be replayed on the big screen when fans are eventually allowed to return to Twickenham.

A moment that makes you forget you are locked down and any post-match chat can only take place virtually.

But that's all it was - just a moment.

A 41-18 victory against Italy is a respectable enough result but - even though it was the visitors' Monty Ioane who scored first - the win was not really in doubt.

What fans were looking for was a performance. Something to show last weekend's unexpected loss to Scotland was an exception, not the new rule.

Once May's try was covered and there had been some attention paid to Anthony Watson's excellent contribution, discussion would have to turn to facts as cold and hard as the almost-freezing Twickenham turf.

The work of England's dazzling wings may have acted as a momentary magician's misdirection, but it is not enough to distract from some of the less aesthetically pleasing elements of the win.

After the chastening defeat by Scotland, England needed to deliver on the promises they had made at the start of the month about a newly firing attack.

There was undeniably individual brilliance from May, Watson and the fleet-footed Henry Slade, who all looked fired up by a first home loss to the Scots since 1983.

But there were also those left out in the Twickenham cold.

England made 18 handling errors in total - three times as many as their opponents, with captain Owen Farrell and centurion Ben Youngs both contributing.

There were four knock-ons and, though England did manage to bring their penalty count down from the 15 conceded against Scotland, they still gifted Italy 12.

Against the runt of the Six Nations litter, May and Watson provided more than enough for the highlights reel.

And of course, Jones was happy to answer questions on his two stars after the match.

The Australian said May - who has now moved clear into second place on England's all-time try-scoring list - had "obviously been watching rugby league tapes" as inspiration for his finish.

"It was absolutely brilliant," Jones continued. "I haven't seen him do that in training as such but he's such a good try-scorer. He's always looking to see how he can score a try."

On the other wing Watson had side-stepped inside two defenders for his first score and made an impressive intercept for his second.

His efforts were also worthy of plaudits from Jones, who said Watson "looked sharp" and "back to his best".

But the parts that would not make the editor's cut are those which must now be examined by Jones and his team with a third-round trip to Cardiff looming in two weeks' time.

May and Watson took their opportunity when they could, perhaps knowing that they would get less time on the ball against tougher defences if England revert back to a repetitive kicking game.

After Wales' thrilling victory in Scotland, the defending champions have a chance to reignite their title hopes with a third-round win.

Just as England's Six Nations and Autumn Nations Cup trophies offered some solace for fans bored of turgid play in 2020, so May and Watson were a welcome distraction from some aspects of the hosts' game on Saturday.

But - with or without fans - a trip to the Principality is a task incomparable to facing Italy at Twickenham.

By the time England cross the Severn Bridge, May and Watson's heroics will be forgotten. Victory is all that will matter.

Sensational Messi goals highlight rout of Alaves

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 13 February 2021 14:08

Lionel Messi scored two scorching strikes as Barcelona hammered Alaves 5-1 on Saturday in La Liga to warm up for their upcoming Champions League clash with Paris St Germain in style.

Portuguese forward Francisco Trincao put Barca in front after a cut-back from 18-year-old debutant midfielder Ilaix Moriba and Messi thought he had doubled the lead later on when knocking in on the rebound but the goal was ruled out for a marginal offside against Antoine Griezmann.

Messi then took matters in to his own hands from outside the area and thumped the ball off the far post with such venom that it landed just inside the opposite post.

Alaves's Luis Rioja pounced on a mistake by Ilaix to reduce the deficit in the second half but Barca came roaring back with a second strike from Trincao, another long-range missile from Messi and then a fifth goal crafted by Messi and Griezmann and finished off by left back Junior Firpo.

A seventh consecutive league win took Barca up to second in the standings on 46 points, eight behind leaders Atletico Madrid who beat Granada 2-1 earlier on Saturday and have a game in hand.

Barca had suffered a painful 2-0 defeat to Sevilla in Wednesday's Copa del Rey semi-final first leg and coach Ronald Koeman rotated his side to make for fresher legs for Tuesday's first leg at home to PSG.

He rested Jordi Alba and started without Sergino Dest, Ousmane Dembele and Pedri but there was no rest for Messi, who unleashed a ferocious shot for his first goal after his earlier strike had been cruelly chalked off.

He also sparked the move for Barca's third goal, racing on to a through ball and attempting to round keeper Fernando Pacheco, who succeeded in snuffing out Messi but could only parry the ball into the path of Trincao, who tucked it into the unguarded net in the 74th minute.

Messi was hungry for a second goal of his own, however, and got one less than 60 seconds later, dribbling past two defenders outside the area and rattling a left-footed shot into the far corner.

Now toying with his prey, he released Griezmann with a delicious chipped pass and the Frenchman sent in a low cross for Firpo to complete the thrashing.

Trincao later netted what would have been his hat-trick goal but was denied by the offside flag.

Pitchers Flaherty, Soroka win arbitration cases

NEW YORK -- St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jack Flaherty and Atlanta Braves pitcher Mike Soroka won their salary arbitration cases Saturday, while Tampa Bay Rays reliever Ryan Yarbrough lost his case.

Flaherty was awarded a raise from from $604,500 to $3.9 million by arbitrators Howard Edelman, Steven Wolf and Walt De Treux, who heard arguments Feb. 5. The Cardinals had submitted $3 million.

Soroka was given a raise from $583,500 to $2.8 million by arbitrators Frederic Horowitz, Margaret Brogan and Robert Herzog, who heard arguments Friday. The Braves had argued for $2.1 million.

Yarbrough received a raise from $578,500 to $2.3 million from arbitrators Allen Ponak, Mark Burstein and Jules Bloch rather than his request for $3.1 million.

Players and teams have split six decisions so far, with four players -- Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Austin Barnes, Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ, San Francisco second baseman Donovan Solano and Atlanta shortstop Dansby Swanson -- scheduled for hearings next week.

All cases are being argued over Zoom this year due to the pandemic rather than in person.

Flaherty, 25, was 4-3 with a 4.91 ERA in nine starts during the shortened season, striking out 49 and walking 16 in 40 1/3 innings.

Soroka, 23, was 0-1 with a 3.95 ERA in three starts. His year ended when he tore his right Achilles tendon while pitching against the New York Mets on Aug. 3. Soroka had surgery four days later and hopes to be ready for Opening Day.

A 29-year-old left-hander, Yarbrough was 1-4 with a 3.56 ERA in nine starts and two relief appearances, striking out 44 and walking 12 in 55 2/3 innings. He was 1-0 with a 3.68 ERA in two postseason starts and five relief appearances, helping the Rays reach the World Series, where they lost to the Dodgers.

Heim Gives Venturini Another Daytona ARCA Win

Published in Racing
Saturday, 13 February 2021 13:25

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Corey Heim picked up right where he left off in the ARCA Menards Series during Saturday’s season-opening Lucas Oil 200 driven by General Tire at Daytona Int’l Speedway.

After topping last year’s finale at Kansas Speedway, Heim took his second-straight ARCA Menards Series win with a dominant performance at the World Center of Racing.

The 18-year-old from Marietta, Ga., took control of the race after then-leader Tanner Gray pitted under caution on lap 45 and controlled the remaining distance with the help of his Venturini Motorsports teammate, Drew Dollar.

Heim paced the final 38 laps uncontested, holding off Dollar in a one-lap, overtime sprint to the finish after a late caution bunched the field back up.

“That all came down to strategy,” Heim said in victory lane. “I have to give all the credit to (crew chief) Shannon Rursch; he made the perfect call and executed this race perfectly for us. He dialed this JBL Camry in and gave me something I could work with. To win here is awesome. It’s what we dream of.

“I have to give a lot of props to Drew Dollar; he really helped me there at the end,” Heim added. “Drew lining up right behind me on the last restart was important, because he had some experience in the draft, and I put my trust in him to help us there at the end and it really paid off. It was a lot of pressure.”

Though he went winless in his first 15 ARCA starts, Heim has now won in each of his last two appearances.

He’ll chase the championship this year in the No. 20 Venturini Motorsports Toyota Camry, and Heim knows that a win at Daytona is the biggest step he could have taken toward achieving that goal.

“There’s only one direction things can go from here, and that’s forward,” Heim noted. “I’m just really blessed to be here. It’s crucial that we won here today. It’s probably the biggest field we’ll have here all season, and if you DNF and finish in the 30s … you won’t have the opportunity to make that (deficit) up and it makes for a rocky road ahead.

“To start off with a win, I couldn’t ask for any more. Everyone did an amazing job all weekend.”

Heim also kept Venturini Motorsports’ streak of success at Daytona alive as well. Saturday marked the team’s fourth-straight Lucas Oil 200 win and its fifth consecutive victory overall at the World Center of Racing, counting last August’s race on the Daytona road course.

Dollar tried to get to Heim’s outside coming to the finish line, but a lack of drafting help from behind – combined with damage to his left-front fender from a lap-28 crash – kept him from mounting a charge.

“We did all we could do there,” Dollar noted. “I think we put on a good show for everyone. I tried to push him out (there), but lagged back and just couldn’t get a run. We had a parachute for a left-front (fender) there at the end.”

Reigning ARCA champion Bret Holmes, running a partial schedule this season, crossed the line third ahead of Ty Gibbs and Ryan Sieg, the younger brother of NASCAR Xfinity Series regular Ryan Sieg.

Derrick Lancaster was a career-best sixth, followed by Gray, who came from 17th after his pit stop to finish seventh. Modified ace Andy Jankowiak, rookie Jack Wood and Sean Corr completed the top 10.

Short-track legend Rich Bickle, a five-time winner of the Snowball Derby for super late models,

The overtime finish was set up when Scott Reeves blew a right-front tire in turn four and pounded the outside wall with five laps left, while the biggest incident of the day was on lap 28 after two other Venturini cars – Gracie Trotter and Derek Griffith – got together in a battle for the race lead.

Trotter tagged Griffith into a spin in turns three and four, collecting Greg Van Alst, Nick Sanchez, and Scott Melton as well when the pack broke apart in the banking. All drivers involved were uninjured.

The ARCA Menards Series season continues March 12 at Arizona’s Phoenix Raceway.

The finish:

1. Corey Heim, 2. Drew Dollar, 3. Bret Holmes, 4. Ty Gibbs, 5. Kyle Sieg, 6. Derrick Lancaster, 7. Tanner Gray, 8. Andy Jankowiak, 9. Jack Wood, 10. Sean Corr, 11. Jason Kitzmiller, 12. John Ferrier, 13. Howie DiSavino III, 14. Jason White, 15. Rich Bickle, 16. Eric Caudell, 17. Richard Garvie, 18. Toni Breidinger, 19. Tim Richmond, 20. Benny Chastain, 21. Thad Moffitt, 22. Con Nicolopoulos, 23. Gracie Trotter, 24. Scott Reeves, 25. Chuck Hiers, 26. D.L. Wilson, 27. Dave Mader III, 28. Willie Mullins, 29. Greg Van Alst, 30. Derek Griffith, 31. Nick Sanchez, 32. Scott Melton, 33. Owen Smith, 34. Brittney Zamora.

Sens reunite with Dzingel after trade with Canes

OTTAWA -- The Ottawa Senators acquired forward Ryan Dzingel from the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday for forwards Alex Galchenyuk and Cedric Paquette.

Dzingel, drafted by the Senators in the seventh round in 2011, had two goals and two assists in 11 games with the Hurricanes this season. He has 171 points (76 goals, 95 assists) in 343 career NHL games with Ottawa, Columbus and Carolina.

Galchenyuk, 27, scored one goal in eight games for the Senators, while Paquette, also 27, had one goal in nine games.

Galchenyuk has 321 points (136, 185) over 557 career games with five teams. Paquette has 86 points (48-38) in 386 career games with the Senators and Tampa Bay Lightning.

"Cedric is a strong, physical forward who won the Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay last season," Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell said in a release. "We're excited to add both of these players to our forward group."

Dzingel will have to quarantine for 14 days before he can play for Ottawa due to COVID-19 protocols.

NFL receiver Hogan enters Premier Lacrosse draft

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 13 February 2021 13:05

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Former Super Bowl champion Chris Hogan, who caught 216 passes over nine NFL seasons, is returning to his other favorite sport -- lacrosse.

Hogan, 33, has entered his name in the Premier Lacrosse League entry draft on March 25, he confirmed Saturday.

"As many of you know, my roots are in lacrosse, and I'm excited to fight for a roster spot with the best in the world!" he posted on Twitter on Saturday.

Hogan was a four-time letter winner and captain at Penn State, where he played lacrosse from 2007 to 2010 after a highly decorated career at Ramapo High School in northern New Jersey. He was a midfielder for the Nittany Lions, scoring 29 goals as a junior and earning all-ECAC recognition. His coach once said he "could be the best middie in Division I."

In his intro video before prime-time games as a member of the New England Patriots, Hogan announced his alma mater as "Penn State lacrosse." He used his final year of eligibility to play football at Monmouth (N.J.) University.

Hogan didn't say whether he's retiring from the NFL.

He played last season for the New York Jets, catching 14 passes for 118 yards in five games. The Jets were so depleted at wide receiver that Hogan, who signed in training camp, became an immediate starter. He landed on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain and was waived from IR in December.

His best years came with the Patriots, from 2016 to 2018. He became a sure-handed target for Tom Brady and won two Super Bowl rings in New England before moving on to the Carolina Panthers and Jets. He began his career with the Buffalo Bills.

In a 2019 interview with US Lacrosse Magazine, Hogan said he would "absolutely" be interested in playing lacrosse again. He still owned a stick, he said, but hadn't worn gloves in eight years.

In 2018, Hogan reportedly became an investor in the Premier Lacrosse League, which consists of eight teams after a recent merger with Major League Lacrosse. The entry draft is for players who never have played in the PLL.

Harvey agrees to minor league deal with Orioles

Published in Baseball
Saturday, 13 February 2021 12:44

BALTIMORE -- Matt Harvey will try to revive his career with the Baltimore Orioles.

The 31-year-old right-hander agreed Saturday to a minor league contract with the Orioles. He would get a $1 million, one-year contract if added to the 40-man roster, and would have the chance to earn performance bonuses.

Harvey was 0-3 with an 11.57 ERA in four starts and three relief appearances for the Kansas City Royals in 2020. His fastball averaged 94.5 mph, down from 97 mph in 2013.

An All-Star with the New York Mets in 2013, Harvey's career was derailed by Tommy John surgery in October 2013 and an operation to correct thoracic outlet syndrome in 2016.

Harvey went 34-37 with a 3.66 ERA for the Mets from 2012 until he was traded to Cincinnati in May 2018. He moved on to the Los Angeles Angels in 2019 and the Royals in 2020, and is 44-52 with a 4.14 ERA in 144 starts and eight relief appearances for his career.

He will try to earn a job in a rotation headed by All-Star John Means. Former All-Star Felix Hernandez and Wade LeBlanc also will be at Orioles spring training with minor league contracts, and rookies Dean Kremer and Keegan Akin also figure to be competing.

Reports: Cabrera to join D-backs on 1-year deal

Published in Baseball
Saturday, 13 February 2021 13:24

PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to a $1.75 million, one-year deal with veteran infielder Asdrubal Cabrera, according to multiple media reports.

Cabrera can earn up to $1.05 million in performance bonuses. The deal was first reported by MLB Network.

The 35-year-old is a two-time All-Star who was with the Washington Nationals in 2020, batting .242 with eight homers and 31 RBIs in the pandemic-shortened season. Cabrera seems like an ideal fit for the Diamondbacks at second base, which would move the versatile Ketel Marte back to center field.

Marte had a breakout year in 2019 while playing mostly center field but was moved back to primarily second base in 2020.

Cabrera was an All-Star with the Cleveland Indians in 2011 and 2012. He has played all four infield positions during his career and has nearly 1,700 career hits, along with 188 homers.

The Diamondbacks have made a couple of moves over the past few weeks after a quiet offseason. They signed veteran relief pitcher Joakim Soria to a $3.5 million, one-year deal.

Arizona is coming off a disappointing 25-35 record in 2020, which put them last in the NL West.
