Zags edge Baylor for top seed in bracket reveal

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 13 February 2021 11:06

Gonzaga was the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA men's basketball selection committee's mock bracket reveal on Saturday afternoon, edging out fellow unbeaten Baylor.

The Bulldogs and Bears have been atop the rankings since the first week of the season, and they're the final two undefeated teams remaining in college basketball. They're also the top two teams in the NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET), as well as nearly every metric. Gonzaga has one more Quadrant 1 win than Baylor, giving the Zags the edge right now.

"To no one's surprise, these two teams are considered the best of the best," said Mitch Barnhart, director of athletics at the University of Kentucky and chair of the committee. "Gonzaga and Baylor have been dominant teams to this point, and while there's no reason to think that won't continue, the beauty of college basketball is that anything can happen on a given night."

Barnhart also said the margin at the top was "razor-thin."

Joining Gonzaga and Baylor on the 1-seed line were Big Ten powers Michigan and Ohio State. Another Big Ten team, Illinois, was the top team on the 2-seed line, followed by Villanova, Alabama and Houston.

The 3-seed line was led by Virginia, with West Virginia, Tennessee and Oklahoma right behind the Cavaliers.

Rounding out the top-16 reveal were the 4-seeds: Iowa, Texas Tech, Texas and Missouri.

There were few surprises, with Wisconsin the only team missing from the top 16 teams that were in ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi's latest seed list. In the Badgers' place in the official bracket reveal was Oklahoma.

NCAA senior vice president of basketball Dan Gavitt said on CBS that Florida State and USC were also strongly considered to be included in the top 16.

Gavitt added a few notes on the NCAA tournament protocols, saying the NCAA is hopeful it can have "limited capacity" for fans.

He was asked about the ramifications of a positive test, but said one positive test "should not eliminate teams from the entirety of the tournament, as long as they maintain physical distancing and are wearing masks. The team should be able to move on safely."

NCAA director of media coordination David Worlock said in a Twitter post that several tournament details have yet to be decided.

"Among the things still to be determined/announced are the names of the four regions, specifics about possible attendance and contingency plans in the event a team has COVID-related issues both prior to the tournament starting and after March Madness begins," Worlock wrote.

Selection Sunday is scheduled for March 14, with the NCAA tournament's First Four taking place on March 18.

Sources: Knicks' Robinson (hand) out 4-6 weeks

Published in Basketball
Saturday, 13 February 2021 11:00

New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson will undergo surgery on his fractured right hand and is expected to miss four to six weeks, sources told ESPN. Robinson suffered a fracture of the fourth metacarpal on the hand, sources said.

Dr. Michelle Carlson at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York will do the procedure next week, sources said.

Robinson, 22, suffered the injury in a victory over Washington on Friday night.

In his absence, Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said Nerlens Noel and Taj Gibson will primarily play the center position. Julius Randle and rookie Obi Toppin could also give New York minutes there too, Thibodeau said.

Robinson is averaging 8.4 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in a career-high 28.8 minutes per game for the Knicks. After Noel started in the preseason, Thibodeau made Robinson the starter to begin the season, starting him in all 27 games so far.

The Knicks possess an option on Robinson's contract for the 2021-2022 season that they can exercise, keeping him under contract for $1.8 million, which would make him an unrestricted free agent after the 2021-22 season.

Reports: Rays reach deals with vets Hill, McHugh

Published in Baseball
Saturday, 13 February 2021 11:02

Pitchers Rich Hill and Collin McHugh have agreed to one-year contracts with the Tampa Bay Rays, according to multiple reports.

Hill, a 40-year-old left-hander who has pitched for nine others teams over portions of 16 major league seasons, agreed to a deal worth $2.5 million. He is 67-44 with a 3.79 career ERA in stints with the Dodgers, Cubs, Orioles, Red Sox, Indians, Angels, Yankees, Athletics and Twins.

The starter went 30-16 with a 3.16 ERA from 2016-2019 with the Dodgers and was 2-2 with a 3.03 ERA with the Twins during the 2020 pandemic-shortened season.

McHugh, 33, has been both a starter and reliever during parts of eight seasons with the Mets, Rockies and Astros, going 58-43 with a 3.95 ERA. The right-hander signed with Boston in 2020 but opted out of the shortened season while recovering from an injury.

Hill and McHugh are the latest additions to a pitching staff that Tampa Bay is revamping after winning the AL pennant last season.

The team declined an option on right-hander Charlie Morton and traded 2018 AL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell, creating openings in the rotation that offseason signees Michael Wacha and Chris Archer will have an opportunity to fill.

Hill and McHugh potentially add depth to both the rotation and bullpen.

Slugger Bruce, Yankees reach minor league deal

Published in Baseball
Saturday, 13 February 2021 11:12

NEW YORK -- Outfielder Jay Bruce agreed Saturday to a minor league contract with the New York Yankees and will try to win a job at big league spring training.

The 33-year-old has an opportunity as a left-handed bat in a primarily right-handed lineup. The Yankees' outfield features switch-hitter center fielder Aaron Hicks and right-handed-hitting right fielder Aaron Judge.

Clint Frazier, another right-handed hitter, is the top candidate for left field, with Michael Tauchman and Tyler Wade, both left-handed hitters, also contenders but more likely to spend time as backups.

Brett Gardner became a free agent and is talking to the Yankees, but the team and the 37-year-old left-handed hitter have been apart on money. Gardner joined the Yankees in 2008 and had been their longest-tenured player.

Bruce hit .198 with six homers and 14 RBIs for Philadelphia in 96 at-bats during the pandemic-shortened season. He is a three-time All-Star with a .245 average, 318 home runs and 948 RBI during 13 big league seasons with the Reds (2008-15), the Mets (2016-18), Indians (2018), Mariners (2019) and Phillies.

Britain's Joe Salisbury and American partner Rajeev Ram continued their Australian Open title defence with a second-round win over Tomislav Brkic and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi.

The fifth seeds overcame a second-set wobble to beat the Bosnian-Pakistani pair 6-3 4-6 6-2.

They will play Australia's John Peers and Michael Venus of New Zealand next.

Salisbury and Ram won their maiden Grand Slam title together at Melbourne Park last year.

They are joined in the men's doubles draw by Britain's Jamie Murray, who has reunited with Brazilian Bruno Soares for the 2021 season.

Murray's former partner Neal Skupski and his brother Ken were knocked out with a 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 defeat by Australian John Millman and Brazilian Thiago Monteiro.

Fellow Britons Luke Bambridge and Dom Inglot also fell in the second round, going down 6-4 7-5 to ninth seeds Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek.

Murray was in action on Saturday in the mixed doubles with the Scot and his American partner Bethanie Mattek-Sands beating India's Rohan Bopanna and Duan Yingying of China 6-4 6-4 in the first round.

Salisbury is also competing in the mixed doubles with American Desirae Krawczyk.

Novak Djokovic is facing a race to be fit for his last-16 match against Milos Raonic on a day of intriguing match-ups at the Australian Open on Sunday.

Gland Slam winners Garbine Muguruza, Naomi Osaka, Serena Williams, Dominic Thiem, Iga Swiatek and Simona Halep are also in behind-closed-doors action.

Djokovic suffered an abdominal injury during his third-round win over Taylor Fritz and did not practise on Saturday.

"I don't know if I will step on court," the Serb said after Friday’s victory.

The world number one has been given the maximum time to recover as his match against Raonic is the final one on Rod Laver Arena on Sunday.

Eight-time Australian Open champion Djokovic needed courtside treatment against Fritz and later said he thought he had torn a muscle, adding: "I don't know if I will recover from that in two days."

The top seed has a perfect record of 11 wins from 11 matches against 30-year-old Canadian Raonic, including three-set victories in the Australian Open quarter-finals in 2020 and 2015.

A great-looking day seven schedule

Five Grand Slam winners play on the same court in the women’s singles fourth round on a brilliant-looking schedule on Rod Laver Arena.

It begins at 00:00 GMT with Spain’s Muguruza, a winner at the French Open and Wimbledon, facing Japan’s Osaka, who has won the US Open twice and triumphed in the Australian Open in 2019.

"I don’t think we've played each other before," said Muguruza, who has not dropped a set so far. "I am just happy with being in the second week of a Grand Slam. It shows my game is there."

Williams, 39, is one Slam away from matching Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 major singles titles and is second on Rod Laver Arena. She takes on 22-year-old Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, with the seventh seed aiming to reach her first Grand Slam quarter-final.

All matches will be played without any fans in attendance until at least Thursday because of a snap five-day lockdown for the state of Victoria.

"It’s going to be a rough few days for I think everyone," Williams said of the new restrictions. "But we’ll hopefully get through it.

"It’s not ideal. It’s been really fun to have the crowd back, especially here. It's been really cool, but we have to do what's best.

"I think basically we just go to the tennis, to the hotel. I've been doing that for 20 years, so I think I've been pretty much quarantining for my whole career."

Poland’s Swiatek, 19, won the French Open in October and she meets Romanian second seed Halep, a beaten finalist in 2018 in Melbourne before she went on to clinch the French Open later that year and Wimbledon in 2019.

Auger-Aliassime aims to end Karatsev’s great run

US Open champion Thiem fought back from two sets down to win a five-set thriller against Australia’s Nick Kyrgios in front of 5,000 passionate fans on Friday, just before the lockdown began.

The third-seeded Austrian will face 2017 semi-finalist Grigor Dimitrov, the 18th seed from Bulgaria.

Alexander Zverev, the man Thiem beat in the final in New York in September, takes on Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic, with Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime aiming to end the brilliant run of qualifier Aslan Karatsev.

The Russian, ranked 114th in the world, had to get through three rounds of the qualifying tournament in Doha to get to Melbourne and knocked out Argentine eighth seed Diego Schwartzman in the previous round.

Tennis Breakfast will be on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra from 07:00 GMT on Sunday, with live radio and text commentary of Swiatek v Halep and Djokovic v Raonic from 08:00 GMT.

Karolina Pliskova smashed two racquets and argued with the umpire in her 7-5 7-5 third-round loss to Karolina Muchova at the Australian Open.

The Czech sixth seed was given a code violation when she destroyed her racquet after losing the first set.

She then walked into the players' tunnel and broke another racquet before being reported by an official.

World number one Ashleigh Barty advanced to the fourth round with victory over Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Home favourite Barty came out on top in a staccato match, beating the Russian 6-2 6-4.

Barty lost the first two games of the first set before winning six in a row to close out the opener.

She again went a break down in the second, with Alexandrova finding her range after treatment on her abdomen, but Barty upped her level to win the final four games.

She will play Shelby Rogers for a spot in the quarter-finals after the American beat Estonian 21st seed Anett Kontaveit 6-4 6-3.

'I can do what I want' - Pliskova unimpressed

Pliskova was left unimpressed when she was given a second penalty for breaking the racquet.

"It's off court, I'm allowed to do what I want," Pliskova argued after being docked a point for a second violation.

Chair umpire Alison Hughes told Pliskova that she was not allowed to destroy any equipment during a match.

The incident seemed to fire up Pliskova's game as the former world number one then raced into a 5-0 lead in the second set before losing seven games in a row to see her bid for a maiden Grand Slam title come to an end.

International Tennis Federation (ITF) rules state players are not allowed to "violently or with anger hit, kick or throw a racquet or other equipment within the precincts of the tournament site".

Pliskova hit 40 unforced errors to 23 winners and has not reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam since the 2019 Australian Open.

"I don't feel safe with anything that I was really doing on the court," she said.

"Of course, I played quite amazing to 5-0, but then it's quite tough to hold this level for a longer time."

Czech Muchova will play 18th seed Elise Mertens of Belgium, who breezed past Swiss 11th seed Belinda Bencic 6-2 6-1, for a place in the quarter-finals.

Fifth seed Elina Svitolina advanced to the second week with a 6-4 6-0 win over Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan.

Ukrainian Svitolina will play Jessica Pegula after the American stopped France's Kristina Mladenovic 6-2 6-1.

Donna Vekic saved match point and overturned a 3-0 third-set deficit to beat dangerous Estonian Kaia Kanepi.

Kanepi had ended Sofia Kenin's title defence in the second round and Croatia's Vekic had to dig deep to win 5-7 7-6 (7-2) 6-4.

She will play American Jennifer Brady, who continued her good form with a 6-1 6-3 win over Slovenian qualifier Kaja Juvan.

There are no fans at the Australian Open as Melbourne enters a five-day lockdown.

Daniil Medvedev's coach walked out as the Russian blew a two-set lead before winning a five-setter for the first time in the Australian Open third round.

The fourth seed eventually beat Filip Krajinovic 6-3 6-3 4-6 3-6 6-0.

Medvedev repeatedly yelled at his box as he went 4-1 down in the fourth - with coach Gilles Cervara eventually picking up his bag and leaving.

He did not return to see Medvedev dial back in to dominate the deciding set.

"He said just before leaving that he's sure I'm going to win the match, but he's going to leave to let me be more calm," Medvedev said of Cervara's exit.

"Sometimes maybe I will disagree but this time for sure it was a good thing to do.

"Today it helped, and definitely we're going to talk about it a little bit, but there is not a big deal."

Medvedev, among the favourites to challenge defending champion Novak Djokovic, yelled in French, Russian and English as the match against the Serb slipped from his grasp.

He also complained about the spider-camera at Melbourne Park, saying it was obstructing his toss on serve, and at one point shouted: "This Australian Open sucks."

He received a medical time-out in the fourth set after complaining of buttock pain and then went on to win the final set without dropping a game in just 25 minutes.

Medvedev, who won the season-ending ATP Finals in 2020, has often caught attention for his on-court antics.

He was booed throughout the US Open in 2019 where he reached the final, and he later admitted that the crowd spurred him on.

"Sometimes I'm a very temperamental person on the court so it can still get out, and usually it doesn't help me to play good," he said.

"Now I think I have made big steps already working on my mental strengths."

There are no crowds at the tournament after the state of Victoria entered an emergency five-day lockdown on Saturday.

Medvedev will play Mackenzie McDonald next after the American beat Lloyd Harris of South Africa 7-6 (9-7) 6-1 6-4.

Greek fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas also advanced, beating Mikael Ymer of Sweden 6-4 6-1 6-1.

He will play eighth seed Matteo Berrettini after the Italian edged out Karen Khachanov of Russia 7-6 (7-1) 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-5).

Casper Ruud became the second Norwegian man - after his father, Christian - to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam.

Ruud beat Moldova's Radu Albot 6-1 5-7 6-4 6-4 and will play Andrey Rublev next after the Russian seventh seed beat Feliciano Lopez of Spain 7-5 6-2 6-3.

Ruud's father reached the fourth round of the 1997 Australian Open.

Rafael Nadal beat Britain's Cameron Norrie in straight sets to set up a fourth-round meeting with Fabio Fognini, who ousted Alex de Minaur of Australia 6-4 6-3 6-4.

Rafael Nadal beat an impressive Cameron Norrie to reach the Australian Open fourth round and end British interest in the singles competition.

Spanish second seed Nadal was able to see off his spirited 69th-ranked opponent 7-5 6-2 7-5.

Playing on an empty Rod Laver Arena after Melbourne entered lockdown, Nadal was not at his rhythmic best but he held off a confident-looking Norrie.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion will play Italy's Fabio Fognini next.

Norrie claimed the first break of the match and hung in well against Nadal, but there was no stopping the Spaniard when he upped his tempo.

Nadal showed occasional hints on serve of a back problem that has bothered him since his arrival in Australia but he moved and hit freely.

"I combined very good games with a couple of unforced errors that I need to fix," Nadal said.

"That is normal and hopefully that will help me for what's coming on Monday," Nadal added.

Nadal has yet to drop a set in Melbourne despite being, by his own admission, not near his best.

Norrie played well, saving six of the 12 break points he faced, but although he would get to 0-30 on the Nadal serve he could not find a way through.

His early break was cancelled out straight away by Nadal and a tight first set ended with a long forehand from the British number three.

He was able to hang in with Nadal on the long rallies, saving break points to start the second and third set, but Nadal's extra pace, particularly on the forehand, broke through his defences.

Nadal grew frustrated at times with the odd shot drifting long, but he was able to up his quality when it mattered to win in two hours 15 minutes.

Norrie was the last Briton standing in the singles for a second Grand Slam in a row, after he reached the third round of the US Open in September.

There are still British hopes in the doubles, led by Jamie Murray and Joe Salisbury, and the wheelchair events, which start on Sunday.

Nadal hopeful crowd can return

It was a shame for Norrie that there was no crowd present for his first meeting with one of the sport's 'big three' - Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

Up to 30,000 fans a day were allowed in Melbourne Park for the first five days of the Grand Slam, before the state of Victoria went into lockdown for five days from Saturday.

Crowds were asked to leave the Rod Laver Arena at 23.30 local time on Friday, with only support staff and match officials allowed in the stadiums.

Crowd numbers had slowly grown over the five days and Australian Nick Kyrgios said they were crucial in getting him over the line in his second-round match against Ugo Humbert.

Speaking about playing in front of no fans, Nadal said: "The feeling is completely different. Nobody wants this, but it's not the time to forget about the situation we're facing.

"Australia is one of the best examples in the world [for their Covid-19 response] so maximum respect for what they have been doing and hopefully the situation will improve and the crowd can come back before the end."

World number one and home favourite Ashleigh Barty, who did not play at the tournaments last year that were played behind closed doors as she did not travel because of the coronavirus pandemic, said she quite enjoyed the silence of the stadium.

"You can narrow your focus in to listen to the sound of the ball," Barty explained after her win over Ekaterina Alexandrova.

"It doesn't change anything for me. It was something I have never experienced before. It was new and I almost had to cut myself some slack and give myself the time to get used to it."
