Liverpool, England legend Clemence dies at 72

Former England, Liverpool and Tottenham goalkeeper Ray Clemence has died aged 72, it was announced on Sunday.

Clemence, who played 61 times for England, began his professional career with Scunthorpe United before joining Liverpool, where he made over 450 appearances in 14 years at Anfield.

"We're deeply saddened by the passing of one of the greatest-ever goalkeepers, Ray Clemence," Liverpool said in a statement.

"The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool Football Club are with Ray's family and many friends."

He was part of the dominant Liverpool side of the 1970s, winning three European Cups, five English top-flight league titles and two UEFA Cups.

Clemence's last appearance for Liverpool came in their 1-0 victory over Real Madrid in the 1981 European Cup final after which he joined Spurs and added another UEFA Cup and FA Cup to his trophy cabinet.

Clemence became the first goalkeeper to captain England since Frank Swift when he took the armband in a friendly against Brazil in 1981.

"We are deeply saddened to report the passing of legendary former goalkeeper Ray Clemence," Spurs said in a statement.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to Ray's family and many friends throughout the game at this sad time."

After his retirement as a player, Clemence held coaching positions with England and Spurs.

Spurs also posted a message from Clemence's family: "After fighting so hard, for such a long time, he's now at peace and in no more pain.

"The family would like to say a huge thank you for the love and support he's received over the years. He was loved so much by us all and will never be forgotten."

Former Bangladesh Under-19 player Mohammad Sozib has died in Durgapur at the age of 21. Local police confirmed it was a case of suicide.

Sozib was a right-hand opening batsman and last played competitive cricket in the 2017-18 Dhaka Premier League for Shinepukur Cricket Club. He also played three Youth ODIs for Bangladesh against Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, in 2017, and was among the standby players for the 2018 Under-19 World Cup.

Khaled Mahmud, the BCB director who is also the head coach of Bangla Trac Academy in Rajshahi where Sozib started training in 2008, remembered him as a talented cricketer.

"I can't believe what I heard," Mahmud was quoted as saying by Bengali daily Kaler Kantho. "I am feeling extremely sad hearing the news. He was an opening batsman who bowled medium-pace, and he played for Shinepukur Cricket Club."

Tanumoy Ghosh, a first-class cricketer from Rajshahi said: "I always believed that he could play for a long time because he was so hard working in the academy. It is sad to hear what happened to him."

There's no service that provides institutional support for mental health issues to sportspersons in Bangladesh. Only BCB has provided mental health specialists from time to time in the past.

Tiger finds water 3 times, makes 10 on 12th hole

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Tiger Woods made his worst score on a hole in his professional career on Sunday, taking 10 strokes at the par-3 12th after hitting his ball into Rae's Creek three times during the final round of the Masters.

Woods, the defending champion who was well out of contention, hit his tee shot into the water, using an 8-iron from 155 yards that hit on the front of the green and rolled back into the creek.

From just in front of the creek with 70 yards to the pin, he again saw his ball spin back into the water.

Dropping again and taking a second penalty stroke, Woods went long with his fifth shot into the back right bunker. Facing an awkward stance, Woods thinned the ball out of the sand, back across the green and into the water.

After dropping for his seventh shot, he played his eighth again from the bunker, got the shot onto the green and two-putted for a 10.

Woods' previous highest score was a 9 at the 1997 Memorial on the third hole at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

In major championships, he twice made 8s on par-4s, at the 1996 U.S. Open and the 1997 Open.

The 12th played an important role in Woods' victory last year. It is where four contenders all hit into the water -- Brooks Koepka, Ian Poulter, Francesco Molinari and Tony Finau.

Woods knocked a 9-iron onto the green to the middle left portion and then two-putted from 50 feet to tie for the lead for the first time in the tournament. He would go on to birdie the 13th, 15th and 16th holes and won by a shot over Koepka, Dustin Johnson and Xander Schauffele for his fifth Masters win and 15th major championship.

Former Dodgers manager Lasorda hospitalized

Former Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda is hospitalized in intensive care in Orange County, California, the team announced Sunday.

Lasorda, 93, is resting comfortably, according to the team.

"The family appreciates everyone's thoughts and prayers; however, they request their privacy at this time," the Dodgers said.

Lasorda attended the team's Game 6 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Oct. 27 in Texas that clinched the Dodgers' first World Series title since 1988.

Lasorda managed the Dodgers from 1976 to 1996, guiding the team to two World Series titles. During his time as manager, the Dodgers won four National League pennants and eight division titles.

He had a heart attack in June 1996 and retired from managing the Dodgers the next month. He has remained with the organization as a special adviser to the chairman.

Lasorda has been with the Dodgers since 1949, starting as a minor league pitcher in the Brooklyn system. He has been a pitcher, coach and manager for the team. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Former Worcester Warriors owner Cecil Duckworth CBE, whose money helped transform the club into a Premiership side, has died at the age of 83.

The Warriors benefactor was actively involved with the club from 1997 to 2015, when he stepped down as chairman to become club president.

He funded the development of Sixways and inspired Warriors' rise to the Premiership for the first time in 2004.

Sport-loving Duckworth also served as club president with Worcestershire CCC.

"Everyone at Warriors is deeply saddened by the news of Cecil's death," said Warriors owners Jason Whittingham and Colin Goldring.

"His rugby legacy is an immense one and one that we are proud to have inherited.

"Cecil has been a tremendous help to us over the last two years and a source of invaluable advice and guidance in his role as president.

"It says much about Cecil's vision that the plans for the development of the Sixways site that we are working on at the moment are based on a masterplan that Cecil drew up 25 years ago.

"Cecil was respected throughout rugby. He was a superb ambassador for Warriors and for the city of Worcester and Worcestershire.

"He was much loved by players and staff, past and present, at Sixways and he will be missed by us all."

Born in Macclesfield in 1937, Duckworth first moved to Worcestershire in 1958, before starting the Worcester Engineering Co Ltd four years later, helping to invent the combi-boiler.

He sold the company to Bosch in 1992, after which he became involved with Worcester.

Warriors will hold a minute's silence in Cecil's memory before next Saturday's opening Premiership match of the season against London Irish at Sixways.

Analysis

BBC Hereford & Worcester's Dave Bradley

I first met Cecil many years ago when he first got involved with the old Worcester club and helped to develop the clubhouse at Sixways.

He was a lovely man. He always seemed so very calm and collected. I could never imagine him shouting at anyone.

He built a great legacy at Sixways but was also involved in so many other local charities (chiefly the local Acorn Hospice). How he never got a knighthood is a puzzle to me.

Hamilton Conquers Turkey To Secure Seventh Title

TUZLA, Turkey – Lewis Hamilton put together a masterful Turkish Grand Prix, rolling from the sixth starting position to his 94th Formula One victory Sunday at Intercity Istanbul Park.

By doing so, Hamilton locked up his seventh Formula One title to match Michael Schumacher for the most Formula One championships.

The race was run in soggy conditions, with Racing Point’s Lance Stroll starting from the pole for the first time in his career. Stroll would lead the first nine laps as Hamilton, who started sixth, battled in the pack.

The field switched from wet tires to intermediate tires within the first dozen laps, with Stroll cycling back into the lead on lap 13. However, Hamilton and Mercedes had a strategy card up their sleeves.

Stroll was forced to pit for fresh tires on lap 36, leaving his teammate Sergio Perez to try and fend off Hamilton. That didn’t last very long as Hamilton moved around Perez to take the lead on lap 37.

Opting to not pit for fresh tires like most of those behind him had done, Hamilton stayed on track and was able to drive to his 10th victory of the season. That, combined with a disastrous day by his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas that saw him spin six times, allowed Hamilton to officially lock up his seventh Formula One title.

“I know often we, or I say, it’s beyond my wildest dreams, but I think my whole life I secretly have dreamt as high as this,” Hamilton said after the race. “But it always felt so farfetched. I remember Michael (Schumacher) winning those championships, and all of us drivers here are doing the best job we can, and just to get one, two or three is so hard to get. So, to get seven, is just unimaginable.

“But when you work with such a great group of people, and you communicate, and trust one another and listen to one another, there is just no end to what we can do together, this team and I together. And I’m so proud of what we’ve done. And them trusting me out there today like they did, that comes with experience.”

Perez ended up second after a late battle with Charles Leclerc that saw Leclerc take second in his Ferrari, only to give it back in turn 12. The runner-up result matches Perez’s best Formula One finish and was his first podium of the season.

Sebastian Vettel came home in third for Ferrari, giving the four-time Formula One champion his first podium of the year in his final season with Ferrari. Leclerc faded to fourth at the finish, with Carlos Sainz Jr. coming from 15th at the start to finish fifth.

Max Verstappen, Alexander Albon, Lando Norris, Stroll and Daniel Ricciardo completed the top-10.

Day Matches Vilarino With 22nd Euro Series Win

CAVLE, Croatia – Alon Day equaled Ander Vilarino’s NASCAR Whelen Euro Series win record with his 22nd victory during Sunday’s EuroNASCAR PRO event at Automotodrom Grobnik.

The PK Carsport driver led all 17 laps extended his championship lead ahead of the Valencia doubleheader. The Monster Energy driver has now amassed 214 points – 15 more than second-placed Lasse Soerensen.

Day had a perfect start and pulled away from the rest of the field in the opening laps. Reigning NASCAR Whelen Euro Series champion Loris Hezemans followed in second on his No. 50 Hendriks Motorsport Mustang with PK Carsport’s Stienes Longin right behind him.

On lap seven, Lucas Lasserre’s No. 33 Camaro stopped on the main straight after a driveshaft failure, triggering a caution that brought the field back together. When the safety car pulled back into the pits with eight laps to go, Day made another brilliant restart and took the lead ahead of Hezemans. Once again, the Israeli opened a gap on his chasers to conquer his 22nd NASCAR Whelen Euro Series race win.

With the 40 points going to the winner, he also extended his championship lead and kept the red Whelen banner on the windshield of the No. 24 Camaro.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” said Day, who grabbed the pole position by posting the fastest lap in the first EuroNASCAR PRO race at Automotodrom Grobnik. “The PK Carsport team put so much work into the No. 24 Monster Energy Chevrolet Camaro. Unfortunately qualifying didn’t work out yesterday but we made the best out of the situation. I’m tied with Ander for the all-time record and that is something I’m really happy about.”

After having some technical issues on Friday and Saturday, Hezemans was back on the podium in EuroNASCAR PRO. The Dutchman never surrendered his second place and scored important points on his way to defend the title he won in 2019. The Hendriks Motorsport driver is now 25 points behind Day.

The battle for third offered some amazing door-to-door action and pure racing: Longin was holding on to the last spot on the podium until lap 11, when the Belgian was passed by his former teammate Nicolo Rocca. Longin then came under pressure from Soerensen and in an attempt to get the position back from Rocca, he ended up off track and lost several positions. The contact between the two led to a 30 seconds penalty for Rocca, who crossed the finish line third but was demoted to 13th in the final results.

Soerensen finished third and won the Junior Trophy ahead of a strong Marc Goossens at the wheel of the No. 98 CAAL Racing Ford Mustang. Gianmarco Ercoli started 12th – once again the Italian drove the No. 70 Mishumotors car – and fought his way up the ranks to fifth overall and second in the Junior Trophy. The Italian was able to salvage the weekend after his No. 54 Camaro was damaged in EuroNASCAR 2 qualifying. He’s now 18 points shy of Day in the overall standings.

DF1 Racing’s Justin Kunz had a solid run in Croatia and finished sixth. The performance lifted him to the final spot of the Junior Trophy podium.

Multan Sultans opt to bowl v Lahore Qalandars

Multan Sultans have won the toss and decided to set Lahore Qalandars in to bat. On a cooler evening and a different strip, Shan Masood's side will look to bounce back from their agnonising Super Over defeat against Karachi Kings yesterday. This is last-chance territory for both sides, with the winner booking a place in the final against Karachi Kings. Multan's foreign contingent is unchanged, which means Brendan Taylor continues to miss out. Their only change is the inclusion of Junaid Khan in place of Mohammad Irfan.

Lahore Qalandars may feel they have the momentum after yesterday's impressive 5-wicket win un a somewhat steep chase, and go in unchanged. Both sides never having progressed this far into the competition, and a spot in the final would certainly be historic for either franchise. In the group stages, the two games between these sides were somewhat anti-climactic, with Multan and Lahore winning one each.

Multan Sultans XI: Zeeshan Ashraf (wk), Adam Lyth, Shan Masood (capt), Rilee Rossouw, Ravi Bopara, Khushdil Shah, Shahid Afridi, Sohail Tanvir, Mohammad Ilyas, Imran Tahir, Junaid Khan

Lahore Qalandars XI: Fakhar Zaman, Tamim Iqbal, Sohail Akhtar (capt), Mohammad Hafeez, Ben Dunk (wk), David Weise, Samit Patel, Mohammad Faizan, Dilbar Hussain, Haris Rauf, Shaheen Afridi

Sources: Bucs shake up O-line, start Shipley

Published in Breaking News

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will shake up their short-handed offensive line Sunday, as sources confirmed to ESPN that Ryan Jensen will shift to guard and be replaced as the starting center by A.Q. Shipley to account for the loss of starting left guard Ali Marpet.

NFL Network first reported the offensive line changes Sunday morning, one week after Tampa Bay was overwhelmed on the line of scrimmage in its 38-3 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

The Buccaneers will be without Marpet, who has been ruled out for the second straight week because of a concussion. The Bucs are hoping their plan for replacement this week will produce better results than last week's 38-3 loss to the Saints, in which Tom Brady was pressured on 46.3% of his dropbacks -- the highest against him since 2016.

Jensen has started at center in Tampa Bay's first nine games this season. Shipley has not started yet this season, his first with Tampa Bay, but was a favorite of Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians when they were together with the Arizona Cardinals.

Last week, the Bucs inserted backup Joe Haeg into Marpet's spot and he struggled. Haeg is more of a rotational player while Shipley is more of a true interior offensive lineman.

The Bucs are hoping Sunday's new combination, with Shipley at center and Jensen at left guard, works better until Marpet returns.

Shipley, an 11-year veteran, reunited with Arians this past offseason after spending the previous five years with the Cardinals.

The Bucs ran for just 8 yards on five attempts last Sunday night, and Brady was sacked three times in the loss to the Saints.

NFL diversity hiring rule yields mixed emotions

Published in Breaking News
Sunday, 15 November 2020 08:13

A new plan to incentivize NFL teams to develop and hire minority candidates for head-coaching and general manager positions has not been met with the enthusiasm by the people it is supposed to help.

Multiple sources who are people of color told ESPN in recent days that there are, at best, mixed feelings about a plan approved this past week that will award two third-round compensatory draft picks to teams that have minority head coaches or general managers hired away from their organizations.

For starters, these sources were not pleased that many were not consulted about the plan and that it was passed swiftly, without any advance notice. These sources also did not approve of other people speaking for them when they were unable to provide input as to how the program would work.

"This will affect all of us, and we wanted to be involved in the process," one source said over the weekend. "We don't know whether it's lip service or real, and we just want to be judged on our own merits."

Another issue is how the plan could impact intradivisional hirings. One executive wondered whether the Dolphins would have been willing to hire Brian Flores away from the Patriots if it meant division rival New England would be compensated with two extra third-round picks.

"It's counterintuitive," one source said. "They're rewarding you for doing something that you should have been doing already."

NFL owners approved the resolution on Tuesday, finalizing a 10-month discussion aimed at boosting the likelihood that teams will seek out, consider and hire minority coaching and executive candidates.

Owners briefly considered a plan this past spring that would reward teams that made the hires. Ultimately, they decided to incentivize an expansion of the candidate pool.

When this season began, the NFL had only four minority head coaches and two minority general managers. Since then, the Falcons promoted Raheem Morris as their interim head coach, and the Texans made the same move with Romeo Crennel.
