It has been a tumultuous week for Elinor Snowsill.

While the Wales and Bristol fly-half was coming to terms with so much uncertainty ahead, trolls on social media told her they did not care.

And so the 31-year-old spoke out on Twitterexternal-link using #icare, a hashtag which has now been shared by several of the sport's biggest names.

Snowsill wrote: "Do those men trolling articles about women's rugby genuinely think we are going to believe them when they say they don't care?

"The simple act of commenting to declare the statement proves the opposite to be true.

"'#icare about my sport, as do millions of others."

Organisers are aiming to start the Women's Six Nations in spring or summer but the postponement will affect preparations for the World Cup, due to start in September.

With most Premier 15s players being amateur, Covid-19 testing has not been possible in the league and so it was decided a break was necessary to stop the spread of the virus.

And so while she finds herself in a precarious professional position, like so many others in the pandemic, Snowsill has also had to deal with ongoing social media trolling.

She told BBC Sport of "relentless" online abuse in August 2019, after the BBC Elite British Sportswomen's Survey found that 30% of female athletes had been trolled on social media.

The abuse has not gone away and, though Snowsill says it does not affect her personally, she felt compelled to speak out to protect future stars of the sport.

"It doesn't bother me that these people don't care about our sport," she told The Women's Sport Show.

"What bothers me is the environment it creates. Young boys and girls looking at that post and seeing how many people don't care about it.

"It's the values it's bringing up the next generation of players with."

This is not the first time female rugby players have stood up for their sport.

When Ireland used players to launch their men's kit but models to launch the women's jersey in August, Wasps player Florence Williams' tweetexternal-link sparked a viral campaign.

#IAmEnough was used by players to discuss the issue of body image in women's rugby, with Scotland's Rhona Lloyd one of several internationals to lend her voice to the cause.

"The fact these hashtags are gaining so much momentum shows how far our sport has come," Snowsill continued.

"People do care now, enough to gather that momentum.

"It's a form of bullying and we've got to call them out for it."

Reaction to #icare

England World Cup winner Tamara Taylor tweeted: "Women's sport is sport. Isn't it time to just accept that?"

World Rugby chairman Sir Bill Beaumont also used the hashtagexternal-link in reference to a story on recently retired England international Katy Daley-Mclean, calling the fly-half "an inspiration to the next generation of girls and boys".

Former men's Premiership player and Bristol Bears Women assistant coach Tom Lindsay showed his support.external-link

He wrote: "Every day this incredible group of athletes keeps raising the bar, whilst breaking through adversity and batting off negative comments."

Erb Nips Davenport In Wild West Shootout

Published in Racing
Sunday, 17 January 2021 03:06

SAN TAN VALLEY, Ariz. – For the second consecutive night, a late-race slide job decided the outcome of the Wild West Shootout Dirt Track Bank Super Late Model feature and for the second consecutive night, fans were sent home pleased with the race they witnessed.

Jonathan Davenport utilized his outside front row starting position and fired-off to the early race lead. Davenport led the first five circuits before Friday night’s winner, Tyler Erb, made quick work of him at the exit of turn four. By this point, the field was beginning to spread out and the leaders began to hit lapped traffic.

Polesitter Bobby Pierce’s night ended just a few laps later when he slowed at the exit of turn two and pulled into the infield on lap 10. Pierce was unable to continue and credited with finishing 24th. Meanwhile, Saturday night’s race continued with Erb leading Davenport by a little more than one second. Jimmy Mars was a distant third place at the race’s halfway mark and under heavy pressure from Ricky Thornton Jr. and Jason Papich.

It seemed that Davenport was simply biding his time as he began to close in on Erb, while Erb was stuck in lapped traffic. Davenport found his moment to strike, passing Erb for the lead at the entrance of turn one, on lap 30. Erb quickly turned underneath Davenport, attempting a cross-over move, but he was unable to make it stick and could only watch as Davenport began to pull away. The folks at Keyser Manufacturing were all but counting the $10,000 bonus that Davenport seemed destined to collect, but Erb had other plans.

With both drivers still negotiating their way through lapped traffic, Erb ran the high line perfectly on lap 36 and generated a huge run on Davenport down the back stretch.  Not one to waste momentum, Erb turned that drive into a huge slide job at the entrance of turn three, easily clearing Davenport all the way to the cushion and taking the lead.  Davenport hopped the cushion and appeared to scrape the wall with his right rear quarter panel, killing his momentum.  Erb kept digging and quickly lengthened the gap between him and Davenport, with three laps to go.

Both drivers continued to weave through lapped traffic, allowing Davenport to close back in on Erb.  However, Davenport didn’t quite have enough in the closing laps and settled for nearly getting alongside Erb at the exit of turn four on the last lap, coming up just short at the line.

Saturday’s victory marks the second consecutive for Erb, boosting him into a six-way tie for 16th on the all-time Keyser Manufacturing Wild West Shootout wins list. Erb’s second $5,000 payday in as many days was earned by .122 seconds over Davenport, who settled for the runner-up position.

Almost more impressive, Ricky Thornton Jr. charged to finish third, .942 seconds behind Erb and appeared to need just a few more laps in order to contend with the two race-long leaders. Jimmy Mars and Jason Papich rounded out the top-five finishers.

The finish:

1. 1-Tyler Erb[5]; 2. 49D-Jonathan Davenport[2]; 3. 20RT-Ricky Thornton Jr[3]; 4. 28M-Jimmy Mars[6]; 5. 91P-Jason Papich[7]; 6. 75T-Terry Phillips[4]; 7. 157-Mike Marlar[10]; 8. 20-Rodney Sanders[8]; 9. 59-Garrett Alberson[11]; 10. 3S-Brian Shirley[19]; 11. 15-Donny Schatz[13]; 12. 21-Billy Moyer Sr[23]; 13. 1ST-Johnny Scott[9]; 14. 32B-Cody Laney[21]; 15. 86-Kyle Beard[20]; 16. 48L-Tim Lance[24]; 17. 10C-Chad Olsen[14]; 18. 91T-Tony Toste[22]; 19. 25F-Jason Feger[12]; 20. 98-Jared Landers[16]; 21. 37-Scott Ward[18]; 22. 130-Chase Allen[17]; 23. 2S-Stormy Scott[15]; 24. 32-Bobby Pierce[1]

Strickler Stops Bloomquist At Volusia

Published in Racing
Sunday, 17 January 2021 03:08

BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Kyle Strickler’s heart sank when he looked left with five laps to go.

In his 11th World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model start – chasing his first World of Outlaws victory Saturday night at Volusia Speedway Park – Strickler had led all 35 laps to that point, holding off Ross Bailes.

However, this time, it wasn’t Bailes. It was legendary late model racer Scott Bloomquist challenging him for the lead.

“I saw the No. 0 (car of Bloomquist) down there and I’m like, ‘Oh, hell. This is not the right time here,” Strickler said with a chuckle.”

Bloomquist had 33 series wins and 227 series starts to Strickler’s zero series wins and 10 starts. Determination outweighed the stats as Strickler drove like a veteran in the closing laps, blocking Bloomquist’s low line.

Strickler’s ability to not crack under pressure led him to his first World of Outlaws victory and the $10,000 payday during the final night of the Sunshine Nationals on Saturday at Volusia Speedway Park.

“I call Scott my dad,” said Strickler as he tried to formulate words while grasping what just happened. “I know there’s nothing like having the best in the business breathing down your neck for your first Outlaw win.

“Man, that’s awesome. That’s a Cinderella story right there to be able to hold him off for my first win. Man, this thing, it was good tonight.”

Along with having to hold off Bloomquist for the victory, Strickler was tested throughout the 40-lap feature.

From the pole, Strickler launched ahead of the field into turn one, but rookie-of-the-year contender Bailes had the better run off of turn two and snuck underneath Strickler down the backstretch. Bailes had the advantage going into turn three until Strickler kept his foot in the throttle and powered his way around the outside of Bailes and cleared him for the lead. In the same lap, Bloomquist went from fourth to third and began his march to the leaders.

Throughout the 40 laps, Strickler, Bailes and Bloomquist looked as though they were connected by rubber bands. One would pull away and then the other would close back in.

While they argued over the top three spots throughout the majority of the Feature, Canada’s Ricky Weiss was quietly maneuvering his way up through the field for the second race in a row. During the season-opening race on Thursday, Weiss went from 23rd to seventh in his self-build Sniper Chassis. He wrecked that car Friday night before the rain came and had to use his old Team Zero chassis for Saturday’s event. There was no speed lost as Weiss went from 15th to fourth by lap 29.

On a late restart with six laps to go, due to a caution – the fourth of the night – for rookie Ryan Gustin slowing with an issue, Strickler, Bailes, Bloomquist and Weiss were brought nose to tail for the final time of the night. When the green flag hit the crisp air for the restart, Strickler launched ahead of the field and was followed by Bloomquist, who got by Bailes for second.

Bailes and Wiess faded on the restart, however, Weiss made his way back to fourth while Bailes struggled and had to settle for a 12th-place finish.

The main battle was down to Strickler and Bloomquist. Only Strickler didn’t know that until five laps to go. Upon his entrance into turn one, he spotted the last car he wanted to see creeping alongside him.

Not letting that hinder his mentality, he denied Bloomquist his strength of running the bottom in turn one by blocking the lane.

His tactics were enough to keep Bloomquist at bay.

“The only thing I might have considered doing different is, instead of trying to make (turns) three and four work in the middle, I probably should’ve stayed up their ass in (turns) three and four and stay on them and maybe get it done in (turns) one and two,” said Bloomquist.

Weiss finished third.

Strickler won at Volusia eight times in a modified but winning with the World of Outlaws holds a special meaning as he turns his attention more toward late model racing in 2021.

“We’ve, obviously, won all over the country with the modifieds, but trying to do this full-time now and Late Model racing is exploding right now, and to be able to run these tours and win these big races is huge for me and our team,” Strickler said. “This (Longhorn chassis) car is owned by myself and a lot of great sponsors that have been with me forever. It’s awesome to bring this car out and get a win with it.”

The finish:

Feature (40 Laps) – 1. 8-Kyle Strickler [1][$10,000]; 2. Bell ‘Laid It All On The Line’ In Chili Bowl Finale

Published in Racing
Sunday, 17 January 2021 08:30

TULSA, Okla. — Christopher Bell has learned over the last two years that the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals can be just as fickle as it can be kind.

After winning three straight Chili Bowl crowns from 2017-’19, Bell was denied by Kyle Larson a year ago in a late-race battle to the finish. He ended as the runner-up in that contest, but Saturday’s 35th edition of the Super Bowl of Midget Racing had a much more surprising end to the story.

Bell stayed patient for most of the 55-lap A Main, settling into third from the start and riding behind Larson and Justin Grant until a caution inside of 20 laps to go bunched the field up and raised the intensity level.

The Norman, Okla., native slid past Grant shortly after racing resumed on lap 38, making the pass for second coming to 10-to-go signal and quickly setting sail after Larson’s leading No. 01.

Bell chased him down in a hurry and, after Larson bounced off the cushion twice, appeared to be in striking distance with six laps left to steal Larson’s thunder for the fourth time in five years.

Dancing through slower traffic, the pair sized one another up until four laps remained, when a Blake Hahn’s spin drew another yellow flag.

It appeared that all signs were pointing toward another clash of the titans, another war between Larson and Bell that would go down to the last lap or the last corner.

As it turned out, that caution flag set the stage for one of the more dramatic moments in Chili Bowl history, but it wasn’t the one that most fans were expecting.

Larson got the jump on the restart, but Bell reeled him back in and methodically began setting up his move. On a slick race track with a treacherous curb up top, it was going to come down to a deep slide job and Bell prepared to fire his shot with two laps left.

Unfortunately for Bell, his CB Industries No. 84x tagged the outside berm in turn three as he was building speed, sending it into a wild flip in the third turn that silenced the River Spirit Expo Center.

In one stunning turn of events, Bell — the three-time champion who had Larson’s number for so long in Tulsa — was out of it. His shot to win, and his race, were over just like that.

Saturday marked just the second time in Bell’s eight feature starts that he finished outside the top 12, credited with 14th in the 24-car field and a frustrating DNF.

“It was disappointing to have it end like that, but I left it all on the table. Unfortunately, it came up a little bit short,” Bell said. “Hopefully, it was a good race for the fans. I know it was exciting, as it always is here at the Chili Bowl from my seat. The track just took forever to widen out and we were just following each other for so long. I just could never really make a move on him (Larson) like I wanted to.

“I knew it was getting toward the end there, so I just laid it all on the line.”

Despite missing out on a fourth Golden Driller trophy, Bell remains one of the most accomplished drivers in the history of Tulsa Expo Raceway.

His eight feature starts have produced three wins, five podiums and an average finish of 7.13. Bell has started on the front row in six of his eight Chili Bowl appearances. He rolled off third Saturday night.

Bell will have his next shot at glory inside the River Spirit Expo Center during the 36th running of the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals, Jan. 10-15, 2022.

Following tradition, the dates were announced at the conclusion of Saturday night’s grand finale.

Ndombele stunner shoots Spurs to victory

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 17 January 2021 09:44

Tanguy Ndombele scored one of the goals of the season to help secure Tottenham Hotspur a 3-1 win over Sheffield United on Sunday.

The France international scored Spurs' third of the day with a spectacular flick despite having his back to goal after earlier strikes from Serge Aurier and Harry Kane.

- Player Ratings: Ndombele, Son 8/10
- Stream FC Daily on ESPN+

"Tanguy's goal was incredible, the technique he had to flick that ball back over the keeper was truly special," Kane said after the game.

David McGoldrick clawed one back for Sheffield United but it wasn't enough as they slumped to their 16th loss this season.

Spurs didn't waste any time getting on the scoresheet with Son Heung-Min swinging a corner into the box and Aurier heading it past Aaron Ramsdale after just five minutes.

An attempt to play out from the back went horribly wrong for Sheffield United when Oliver Norwood was easily dispossessed.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg played Kane through to the edge of the box and his right-footed shot went straight into the bottom corner on 40 minutes.

McGoldrick pulled one back for the home side on 59 minutes with a fast-paced header into the right corner of Hugo Lloris' goal but Ndombele re-established Spurs' two-goal lead three minutes later with a moment of individual brilliance.

Ndombele received the ball from Steven Bergwijn with his back to the goal and several Sheffield United defenders behind him. Locked in with nowhere to go, he flicked the ball over his head and into the far corner of Ramsdale's goal.

"It's never been the manager saying that [we should sit back] it's been us on the pitch having a mentality where we want to drop and hold on to to the win. The most important thing is us as players to go and take responsibility, and we did that today," Kane added.

"There were a couple of chances I could have done better with, the most important thing is winning games. Anyone who can put a good spell together [is in the the title race], that's why it has been disappointing and frustrating for us dropping points from winning positions."

Ozil confirms Fenerbahce move from Arsenal

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 17 January 2021 09:44

Mesut Ozil confirmed his move from Arsenal to Turkey's Fenerbahce, saying he was "very excited" to play for the former Turkish champions and that he was fit despite missing nearly a year of football.

Sources told ESPN on Saturday that Ozil has a verbal agreement with Arsenal to terminate his contract and will join Fenerbahce in the coming days.

Ozil, 32, has not played for Arsenal since March and was left out of the club's Premier League and Europa League squads at the start of the season. He has long been linked with a move to Fenerbahce, Turkey's second-most decorated club.

Speaking to Turkish broadcaster NTV on Sunday, Ozil, who has Turkish ancestry, said he was looking forward to playing for Fenerbahce, a club he said he has supported all his life, and added he would arrive in Istanbul early on Monday to seal his move.

"I am a Fenerbahce fan. That is why I am very happy to be coming to Turkey with Fenerbahce," Ozil said. "I'm very excited. God gave me the chance to wear this jersey as a Fenerbahce fan. God willing, I will carry it with honour and do everything I can for the team.

"Of course, I'm missing a few matches. I haven't played in a match in a while, but I am physically fit, I have no issues," he said, adding he had been training with the first team at Arsenal during his time off the pitch.

Signed in 2013 for a then-club record fee of £42.5 million from Real Madrid, Ozil played a crucial role under Arsene Wenger in ending Arsenal's trophy drought, winning the FA Cup in his first season.

But he found himself marginalised under Wenger's replacement Unai Emery and again by Mikel Arteta, who said the player's omission from the squad was for "football reasons."

The South Africa women's team is unlikely to take a knee or do anything else in terms of a gesture in support of the global movement against racial intolerance when they take on Pakistan for six limited-overs matches in Durban from Wednesday. They will, however, be expressing their protest against gender-based violence.

When asked if there have been discussions within the team about showing solidarity towards the fight against racial injustice in the upcoming home series, their first international assignment since March last year, senior batter and former captain Mignon du Preez instead focused on what the team is planning to do.

"Something that we're definitely going to talk about in this series is gender-based violence. I think that's also something that's close to our hearts and is a big issue in South Africa," du Preez told ESPNcricinfo. "We, actually, will have a 'Black Day', where we will be playing in black, standing together.

"For us that's going to be the focus this time around. There's been a lot of talk around other racial issues, and we know it's a big issue around the globe. But, for us, this is one that really touches home, and we're going to focus on that during this series."

In the WBBL in October-November, where eight South Africans, including du Preez, made up the largest single-nation overseas contingent and were spread across seven of the eight squads, all teams performed the Indigenous Barefoot Circle ceremony to "reaffirm their commitment to reconciliation and taking a stand against racism". Several teams even took a knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

As far as international cricket goes, the South Africa men's team had made a belated decision to adopt the "raised fist" gesture ahead of the start of their two-Test series against Sri Lanka on December 26, in protest against racial injustice. On December 21, the interim CSA board chairman Judge Zak Yacoob wrote to director of cricket Graeme Smith and men's national head coach Mark Boucher noting individuals' right to freedom of expression, but stating that he felt South Africans should show "the world that all of us are together in opposing racism at every turn".

This came as a reaction to the team not taking a knee - or making any other gesture - on its return to international cricket, against England on November 27, the first time they played together since March. They did, however, wear black armbands to mourn the lives lost in the Covid-19 pandemic.

When South Africa staged its first live cricket match following the resumption of the sport after the pandemic-induced break - the 3TC on July 18 - the country's elite male cricketers showed a united face against racism by taking a knee at Centurion's SuperSport Park.

As for the campaign against gender-based violence, originally launched in February last year, Cricket South Africa had at the time said in a statement that the "focus point" of the drive would be South Africa's ODI match at Kingsmead against Australia that was scheduled for March 22. However, the Covid-19 pandemic-enforced cancellation of the tour put paid to those plans.

After a series of postponements, the second ODI between the UAE and Ireland is finally set to go ahead in Abu Dhabi on Monday, January 18 following approval from local health authorities.

Four members of the UAE squad have tested positive for Covid-19 in the past two weeks, meaning the whole squad had to enter self-isolation. It remains to be seen if any of them will be available for Monday's fixture. UAE won the only game of the series to date by six wickets, thanks to hundreds from Chundangapoyil Rizwan and Muhammad Usman.

Ireland begin a three-match World Cup Super League series against Afghanistan on Thursday, January 21, meaning that the UAE series has had to be cut from four fixtures to two.

While both teams' preparations have been affected by the uncertainty around scheduling, Ireland played a practice match against Afghanistan on Sunday, with 13 players bowling or batting per side.

"We're delighted that the go ahead has been granted for the rescheduled match, and the squad is looking forward to getting back into competitive action," said Richard Holdsworth, Cricket Ireland's performance director.

"It has been very disruptive for team planning and player preparation not knowing when the next game will be, but I know that Graham Ford and the squad will adapt and be pleased that there is a confirmed fixture now in place.

"As always, we appreciate the work of the Emirates Cricket Board in getting this game on, and look forward to seeing the lads back on the field as they look to square the series."
