Penn State drops to 0-3 as Tagovailoa, Terps roll

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 07 November 2020 16:59

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Maryland coach Mike Locksley grew up rooting for the team he now coaches, so he's intimately aware of all the beatings the Terps have taken year after year from Penn State.

Knowing that makes performances like the one Taulia Tagovailoa and the Terps turned in during their 35-19 win over regional rival Penn State on Saturday all that more special.

Tagovailoa completed 18 of 26 passes for 282 yards and three touchdown passes. Rakim Jarrett caught five passes for 144 yards with a pair of touchdowns, Dontay Demus caught another and Jake Funk added 80 rushing yards and a score for the Terps (2-1, 2-1 Big Ten Conference), who won for just the third time in the 44-game series and first since 2015.

"Great team win,'' Locksley said. "I'm just so happy for those players in that locker room. I'm happy for the former Terp football players that have endured us not playing competitively with (Penn State).''

The Nittany Lions have outscored Maryland 163-6 over the past three meetings. Sean Clifford completed 27 of 57 passes for 340 yards with two interceptions and three touchdowns for Penn State, which fell to 0-3 for the first time since 2001.

The Terps flipped the script this time thanks to Tagovailoa and a defense that tortured Penn State all night. A week after he turned in one of the best passing performances in Terrapins history, Tagovailoa didn't hesitate to attack Penn State's reeling defense. He completed 14 of his first 19 throws, including a pair of long touchdowns to Rakim Jarrett on two first-quarter possessions that gave the Terps a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

"I feel like our whole offense, as well as our defense too, I feel like we're all finding our rhythm,'' Tagovailoa said.

Tagovailoa hit Jarrett on a short slant route and the wideout outran Penn State's defense 42 yards into the end zone to open the scoring. Maryland went back to the play as the first quarter drew to a close, but this time Jarrett went 62 yards untouched to put Maryland up 14-0.

Funk capped an 8-play, 62-yard drive with a 38-yard touchdown run through heavy traffic early in the second quarter before Clifford cut the lead to 21-7 with a 20-yard touchdown to Dotson. Tagovailoa gave Maryland a 28-7 lead when he found Demus running uncovered down the sideline for a 34-yard score.

"When you haven't been successful the first couple of games, I don't think you underestimate anyone,'' Penn State coach James Franklin said. "But obviously there are things we've got to get fixed, and there are things we've got to improve. ... We need to get it fixed, and we need to get it fixed fast.''

It got worse for Penn State.

Maryland got the game's first turnover to start the third quarter. Nick Cross blasted Clifford and jarred the ball loose on Penn State's first second-half possession. Linebacker Chance Campbell scooped up the fumble and returned it 44 yards to give Maryland a 35-7 lead.

Wasps trounced bottom-of-the-table DMP Durham Sharks by the remarkable scoreline of 105-0 in round four of the Women's Premier 15s.

Ellie Boatman scored a first-half hat-trick and Claudia Macdonald ran in four tries in the Twyford Avenue rout.

Harlequins won 33-24 at Loughborough in a meeting of two unbeaten sides, despite two tries in the final five minutes from England's Emily Scarratt.

Defending champions Saracens beat Gloucester-Hartpury 43-5.

May Campbell scored a hat-trick as Sarries scored four first-half tries to maintain their 100% record.

They trail on points difference to Quins, who recorded their fourth successive bonus-point win, having built a 19-5 half-time lead and added a bonus-point try soon after the break.

Exeter Chiefs registered their first victory in the division, having joined at the start of the season, beating Worcester Warriors 19-7.

Warriors and England wing Lydia Thompson was forced off through injury on 34 minutes with the scores level at 7-7, and moments later Emily Tuttosi powered over from a driving maul to put Exeter 12-7 up just before the break.

Two minutes into the second half, Spain international Laura Delgado scored on her first start for the club.

Bristol secured 40-18 victory at Sale as a Clara Nielson brace helped build a 34-point advantage, before the Sharks registered two consolation scores.

Bamford fumes after no-goal: VAR 'ruining football'

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 07 November 2020 14:34

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford said VAR was "ruining football" after he was harshly denied a goal because of a mystifying offside decision at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Bamford thought he had made it 1-1 with a well-taken finish but his effort was checked by VAR and it was deemed that his arm had been in an offside position when the ball was passed to him.

- How VAR decisions have affected every club
- How VAR has changed for 2020-21
- VAR in the Premier League: Ultimate guide

He was actually pointing to where he wanted the ball played and because of a change to the handball rule this season his shoulder/armpit was deemed to be in an offside position.

"I don't understand the rule," Bamford told the BBC after Leeds's 4-1 Premier League defeat at Selhurst Park. "You can't score with your arm. It doesn't make sense. It's happened with me today but I've seen it on numerous occasions.

"It's ruining football. You want to see goals. To have it ruled out for something like that is daft. Even the referee couldn't make sense of it. When the players and the officials can't make sense of it... does it make sense?"

It is the latest of many goals that have been chalked off after forensic analysis of offside decisions -- jokingly referred to as armpit offsides.

BT Sport pundit Robbie Savage described the decision as incredible.

"His body is onside, he's pointing to where he wants the ball. The line has been drawn on his arm, where it's not handball, on his sleeve, that's what they're saying is offside," he said. "That is quite incredible. That is the most unbelievable one we've ever seen. Wow."

Former England striker Gary Lineker said it was ridiculous while there was sympathy for Bamford from Palace manager Roy Hodgson.

"There are so many decisions that everyone wants to contest that are not really correct, so why should this week be any different?" he said. "It's quite cruel."

Former referee Peter Walton said the decision had been technically correct.

"The handball law includes that t-shirt area of your body where you can't be accused of handball," he told the Yorkshire Post. "Any part of your body that you can score from is offside so unfortunately for Patrick Bamford there he has been caught with the new interpretation of the handball law."

Ravens WR Dez Bryant moved to active roster

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 07 November 2020 14:28

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Dez Bryant is close to fulfilling one of the NFL's most unlikely comebacks.

Bryant, a three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver, was elevated off the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad to their active roster on Saturday, a day before their game at the Indianapolis Colts.

Bryant's 531 career receptions would be the most by any wide receiver before missing two full seasons and then returning to the NFL, according to Elias Sports Bureau research.

"I told you I'm covered confident and thankful.." Bryant wrote on Twitter minutes after news broke of his practice squad promotion Saturday. "I don't care who hate it."

Bryant, 31, hasn't played a game since Dec. 31, 2017 -- a span of 1,043 days come Sunday. He can become the second Pro Bowl wide receiver miss two full seasons and then return to the NFL since the 1970 merger, according to Elias data. Josh Gordon was the first in 2017.

The addition of Bryant to the active roster comes at a time when Baltimore is uncertain about the status of Devin Duvernay, who was the team's No. 3 wide receiver last Sunday after playing 37 snaps. Duvernay was added to the injury report Friday after being limited Friday with a thigh injury and is considered questionable.

With Chris Moore (thigh) being placed on injured reserve Saturday, Bryant is one of five healthy wide receivers on the active roster, joining Marquise "Hollywood" Brown, Miles Boykin, Willie Snead IV and James Proche.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh was noncommittal Friday when asked if Bryant could get elevated this week or in the near future.

"When we feel like he's ready to come up, in shape, knows the offense well enough and has enough compatibility with Lamar [Jackson] on enough plays, then we'll bring him up," Harbaugh said. "So, when it happens ... I think it will happen. I don't think it's something you want to force-feed in there. So, we'll just have to see as we go."

Bryant has shown strong persistence in returning to the NFL. He worked out for Baltimore in August, but he left without a contract because he was told to improve his conditioning, a source said.

The Ravens invited back Bryant for a second workout on Oct. 28 and signed the former Dallas Cowboys star receiver to the practice squad. Bryant spent the past two weeks participating as one of the opposing wide receivers on Baltimore's scout team before getting promoted Saturday.

Bryant provides experience and size to one of the worst wide receiver groups in the NFL. The Ravens' wide receivers rank last in the NFL in catches (117) and receiving yards (1,367) through eight weeks of the regular season.

In eight seasons, Bryant was the Cowboys' top playmaker, totaling 7,459 yards and a franchise-record 73 touchdown catches.

On Wednesday, Lamar Jackson praised Bryant's route running and hands.

"He's dialed in to the playbook. He wants to compete," Jackson said. "I just can't wait for him to get out there with us on Sundays."

After Saturday's call-up, it looks like Jackson won't have to wait much longer.

Even at 1-2, Harbaugh feels Michigan is 'close'

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 07 November 2020 14:28

After Michigan's first loss to Indiana since 1987 and the team's second straight loss of the season, Jim Harbaugh said after the game that he still believes this team is close to turning the corner.

The Wolverines are now 1-2 on the season and Harbaugh is 2-8 against AP ranked opponents on the road after the 38-21 loss to the Hoosiers. Michigan's defense has struggled the past two games, giving up 460 yards to Indiana and 449 yards to Michigan State and has racked up penalties and mistakes along the way.

Despite those errors and the two losses, Harbaugh said he still has faith in his team.

"Personal feeling is we're close to doing it," Harbaugh said. "You see it done [in practice], you see it happening and then it's gotta take the next step of happening in the games. There's guys that are doing it [in the games] and others will get it and you just keep coaching.

"As a coach, that's what you do, you keep coaching and players keep learning, and they get the experience of they can do it."

He believes his players need to trust their technique, trust their fundamentals and trust their innate ability in games. He knows the results haven't shown it, and the product on the field doesn't show evidence of this team being close, but he believes there is a disconnect from what his team does in practice and in games.

For some reason the players aren't trusting themselves in the games and are still playing with hesitation, he said, and they need to just "let it go" and make quick, decisive decisions.

Harbaugh has drawn heavy criticism for the results so far this season and so has defensive coordinator Don Brown. Breaking a 24-game win streak against Indiana and losing to a Michigan State team coming off of a loss to Rutgers will naturally bring skepticism.

Despite the fact that Harbaugh is in Year 6 as Michigan's head coach, he isn't in panic mode just yet. When asked if he thought he needed to make any drastic changes with personnel or coaches, Harbaugh said he loves what he is seeing from his players and coaches.

"They work extremely hard, their schemes are really good and they coach them good," Harbaugh said. "We just keep forging ahead, keep, stay after it to make that next step. Critical step."

The defense wasn't the only problem in this game as Michigan was held to just 13 rush yards in a game that was never close.

The questions about the direction of this team continue to mount, but Harbaugh says he and his team will continue to move forward and stay the course.

"Every single guy here, every single player here, every single coach here has experienced that in our life where they have taken the adverse and turning it into an advantage," Harbaugh said. "The thing you have to do is push forward, keep going."

Pittman Set To Close His Full-Time Outlaw Tenure

Published in Racing
Saturday, 07 November 2020 13:00

CONCORD, N.C. — Daryn Pittman’s racing career kicked off at five years old. However, it wasn’t until he was about 13 that he turned his passion into a life’s goal.

He wanted to be a professional race car driver. And for more than 20 years, the now 42-year-old Owasso, Okla., native has made that a reality.

Saturday night, he’ll put a period to one chapter in his storied career. Pittman will hang up his helmet as a full-time World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series driver after the season-ending Last Call at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.

In his 23-year history with the Outlaws – 17 of them as a full-time driver – Pittman amassed a plethora of accomplishments:

He earned the 2013 World of Outlaws championship and took 86 career World of Outlaws wins across more than 1,450 feature starts. Pittman was the 2008 Kings Royal winner at Eldora Speedway, a three-time DIRTcar Nationals Big Gator champion and notched two Gold Cup victories at California’s Silver Dollar Speedway.

Pittman was even the 2001 World of Outlaws Gumout Series champion.

But are all of those feats satisfying enough to the 13-year-old Pittman who dreamed of being a World of Outlaws driver?

“I hope so,” Pittman said with a chuckle. “There are a lot of things that I’d obviously love to redo. But all in all, it has been a hell of a ride and I’ve accomplished more than I could ever have hoped to have dreamed of in my wildest dreams for sure.”

Among Pittman’s glories, the championships and wins aren’t what mean the most to him. It’s the lasting impression he’s left on fans and those in the industry. Moments he looked at as insignificant took on new life when they became admired plots to someone’s story.

Knowing something he did helped create a happy moment in someone’s life was an unexpected trophy each time.

That doesn’t change the way Pittman views his career. It makes him prouder of it.

“Just to hear that I was a small part of their life that they vividly remember as a good moment makes me proud,” Pittman said. “Proud of all of the wins. Proud of all of the years we’ve been able to do it and all of the car owners I’ve been able to drive for. But I think, more than anything, I’m just proud of all of the relationships that I’ve had and been able to have with teams that maybe we didn’t finish on the best note, but from a personal standpoint, I think we’ve stayed in good graces with all of my old car owners and crew guys. It’s hard to do this for as long as we’ve done it.

“There are very few that have the long career that me and (10-time series champion) Donny (Schatz) and a couple others have had. I’m just proud of the way we did it.”

In his final weekend as a full-time World of Outlaws driver, Pittman said he hasn’t let that thought get to him. Like any other season, he’s focused on ending it on a high note.

This year has put him on a roller coaster, with the first two-thirds of the year plagued by the COVID-19 pandemic and inconsistencies with the Roth Motorsports team.

In September, shortly after announcing he was stepping away from full-time racing, he also announced he would part ways with Roth – who he had driven for since 2019.

He picked up an emotional hometown win at Lawton (Okla.) Speedway before splitting with the team and rejoining Heffner Racing Enterprises for the remainder of the season.

At Heffner, he was paired with crew member Heath Moyle and reunited with crew chief Kale Kahne – who he worked with at Kasey Kahne Racing when he won the championship. His stint with the team has resulted in one top-five and two top-10 finishes in 11 races, so far.

They’ve shown speed in each event, making the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash in about half of them, but part failures and bad luck have hindered their final results.

Despite the poor finishes, Pittman said he’s still having fun. Being paired with Heffner, Moyle and Kahne to finish out his career in Charlotte – a track he has two wins at – is a big contributor to that.

Daryn Pittman. (Dan Demarco photo)

“I couldn’t have asked to finish out the year with a better team and better people, truthfully,” Pittman said. “For as trying and as hard we’ve had to work to keep a competitive car on the racetrack, as much stuff as we’ve gone through, to do it with these guys and the attitudes that they’ve been able to keep and maintain has been refreshing.

“This has brought me back to what it takes to be a part of successful teams with successful crew guys.”

Once he take the checkered flag for the final time as a full-time World of Outlaws driver, during the fittingly-named Last Call event, and climbs out of the Shipley Energy No. 72 car, a new chapter in his life will begin.

What that is? Pittman is still working on it.

Maybe it will have some racing. Maybe it will have a lot of racing. Maybe it will involve no racing at all.

But what Pittman knows is that he will look to find his 13-year-old self again, who found something he loves and turned it into a life’s goal.

“I’ve been able to turn a hobby into a job and it’s the only job I’ve ever had,” Pittman said. “I think for anybody, that’s all you can ever ask for; to find something you love and find a way to make a living doing it and I’ve been blessed to be able to do that for a long time. No doubt moving forward, whatever, we do, it will also be the same way.

“It’ll have to be something I enjoy, and I look forward to figuring out what that is.”

Barca's Fati tears meniscus after Betis tackle

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 07 November 2020 13:22

Barcelona could be without Ansu Fati for the next two months, if not longer, after he injured his knee in Saturday's 5-2 win against Real Betis.

Fati, 18, was taken off at half-time against Betis and Barca have since confirmed that "he has an internal meniscus tear in his left knee." Sources have told ESPN it is too early to tell how serious the injury is but in the best-case scenario the club are hopeful they will only be without Fati for between four and eight weeks.

- Ratings: Super-sub Messi 9/10 in match-winning cameo
- ESPN Insider Notebook: Possible Solskjaer replacements

Barca must wait for the swelling to subside in the coming days before deciding on a course of treatment for the Spain international. He could be out for up to three months if surgery is required.

The injury rules Fati out of Spain's upcoming games this month against Switzerland, Netherlands and Germany after he was named in Luis Enrique's squad earlier this week.

Have Barca turned a corner after Betis thrashing?

Shaka Hislop remains concerned that Barcelona's "soft underside" will continue to hinder their progress.

Meanwhile, if he doesn't play again until the New Year, he could miss as many as 10 Barca games, including the trip to Atletico Madrid straight after the international break.

Fati picked up the injury after being fouled by Betis defender Aissa Mandi in an incident that drew a penalty. He played on for 15 minutes after the challenge -- despite needing lengthy treatment on the pitch at the time -- before finally being replaced by Lionel Messi.

Ansu has scored five goals in 10 appearances this season for Barcelona and has also registered two assists.

Without him, Barca went on to beat Real Betis 5-2 to end a four-game winless run in La Liga. Messi scored twice, with Ousmane Dembele, Antoine Griezmann -- who also missed a penalty -- and Pedri also on target.

Bayern tested by Dortmund, but cement Bundesliga superiority

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 07 November 2020 13:17

Bayern pulled even with RB Leipzig at the top of the Bundesliga after a 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund on Saturday that showcased much of what makes them special. They absorb setbacks, they adjust and they move on. And they can beat you in so many different ways.

The pregame hype, naturally, was about the clash between Robert Lewandowski, whose silverware collection grew considerably in 2020, and his heir apparent, Erling Braut Haaland, the meditating, yoga-loving, shirtless tractor-driving hero for the 2020s. So much so that the Bundesliga saw fit to hype the contest with a tailor-made cartoon rap throwdown.

- Dortmund 2-3 Bayern: Sane's goal the difference
- Highlights (U.S.): Bayern win gripping Der Klassiker over Dortmund

But strikers, even generational talents like these, are generally dependent on what happens with the the other 10 guys on the pitch behind them. And the fundamental difference is that Lewandowski resides at the cutting edge of an efficient self-sustaining eco-system, brimming in confidence and energy, sure, but continually adapting and self-correcting.

They can lose players to injury (as they did with Joshua Kimmich late in the first half), they can concede goals and they can get stopped in their tracks, like a boxer who runs into a left hook. But every misstep feels like a teachable moment in real time, and their corrections -- when they come -- are minimal. The basic framework -- high line, furious press, flying wingers -- gets tweaked, but rarely significantly altered.

As for Haaland, what sits behind him isn't defined as much by patterns of play (save for the most basic), but individual initiative. He also has hugely gifted teammates and benefits from chances and opportunities, but too often, they're extemporaneous moments. Dortmund coach Lucien Favre hasn't yet made Dortmund greater than the sum of its parts. And with a contract expiring in June -- and no plans for the club to negotiate an extension as of right now -- perhaps he never will.

With Benjamin Pavard injured, Bouna Sarr, a deadline day acquisition from Marseille, lined up at right-back for Bayern. Sarr is 28 and before this season, he'd had played zero minutes of Champions' League football and zero minutes of international football. He was signed for depth -- to be an extra body in the endless slog that is the COVID-altered 2020-21 season, and on Saturday he found himself replacing a World Cup winner on a Treble-winning side against their fiercest opponents.

- Stream ESPN FC Daily on ESPN+ (U.S. only)
- ESPN+ viewer's guide: Bundesliga, Serie A, MLS, FA Cup and more

Unsurprisingly, Dortmund targeted him early and often with Gio Reyna, Raphael Guerreiro behind him and Marco Reus, flitting in from his starting position behind Haaland. It was a sound strategy, but the problem with this Bayern team is how they quickly adapt.

Klinsmann: Dortmund were not determined enough vs. Bayern

Jurgen Klinsmann says Dortmund did enough to at least draw Bayern, they just weren't clinical in the final third.

The high press got that little bit more intense, making it tough for Dortmund to get the ball forward with accuracy. Whenever Sarr came forward, Bayern made sure he was neatly covered. And often, the back line tilted his way, with Jerome Boateng coming over to help, David Alaba sliding across and Lucas Hernandez almost becoming an additional central defender. When Bayern were in possession, they weren't averse to keeping the ball that little bit longer.

And so, Dortmund went to their bread-and-butter. When you have a striker as fast and as strong as Haaland, why not? At one point, he was stopped by a marginal offside call after a brilliant surging run that left Thomas Mueller flat-footed. Shortly thereafter he road-graded Boateng. Haaland was called for a foul, but the messaging was clear, as evidenced by the dirty look Bayern's veteran center-back gave him.

Of course, two can play that game. Bayern's riposte on the counter saw Gnabry's quick burst leave Meunier behind before Lewandowski steered home his pointpoint cross. VAR disallowed it (correctly) for offside, but it was close. So close that it served as a reminder of what Bayern can do and how quickly they do it.

Then came the bad part for Bayern. A poor pass from Sarr caused Kimmich to lose the ball and then, while trying to recover, hack down Haaland. It was an uncharacteristic error, both mental and physical, from Kimmich and it could have resulted in a red card. Instead, it resulted in Kimmich being injured. Corentin Tolisso replaced him and for a minute, you felt that without Bayern's metronome, Favre might find the edge he needed.

Things looked up further for Dortmund when Guerreiro (again on Sarr's side) tucked it inside for Marco Reus to break the deadlock, and it looked as if Dortmund would enjoy the luxury of a half-time lead. But deep in injury time, Thomas Delaney ran into the back of Gnabry and Bayern were awarded a free kick from the edge of the box. Lewandowski, Gnabry and Alaba stood over the ball in conference, like Logan Roy's children figuring out what to do next. It ended with Alaba striking it past Roman Burki with the help of a big deflection off Meunier.

They say conceding a goal just before half-time is one of the most deflating things in the sport. Well, conceding an equaliser just before the break is even worse. And giving up another, just after the break, well, that's just the pits.

It was a standard Lucas Hernandez cross, turned into an inviting gimme by Lewandowski's brilliance and aerial ability. He got across Mats Hummels (no slouch himself) and rested against him to get just enough torque to steer it to the far post.

Two goals in four minutes either side of half-time. Brutal.

Dortmund's reaction was furious, but untidy and again, Bayern could have added to their lead. Coman was denied first by the post, then by Roman Burki. Dortmund turned the screws, camping out in the Bayern half, but knowing the counterattack could come at any time. Flick replied with another set of fresh, roadrunner legs, as Leroy Sane replaced Coman. And sure enough, it was Sane who finished a classic counter cued up by Lewandowski to make it 3-1.

Haaland pulled one back with the sort of move which, when executed perfectly, simply can't be countered: the dink over the top with the big Norseman running off the last defender. It was the kind of two-man transition move that really isn't a game plan, but rather something you have to take when it comes to you.

On this day, it was going to take a clever game plan and plenty of energy and young talent to disrupt Bayern. Dortmund had the latter -- they usually do -- but the former was nullified early.

Maybe it would have been a different story without the gut punch of the Alaba goal just before half-time, but that too is the mark of champions: getting smacked in the face and persevering as if nothing happened. And Bayern, as they showed again, are the Bundesliga's Alpha club for a reason.

51-yard FG gives Liberty win over Virginia Tech

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 07 November 2020 13:41

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Alex Barbir hit a career-long 51-yard field goal with 1 second remaining to lift No. 25 Liberty to a 38-35 victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday.

Barbir's kick punctuated a wild ending for the Flames, who rallied from a 20-14 halftime deficit and moved to 7-0 for the first time in program history.

Barbir had a 59-yard attempt blocked with 8 seconds left, and Virginia Tech's Jermaine Waller returned it to the end zone for what appeared to be the game-winning score for the Hokies (4-3). But officials ruled that Virginia Tech had called a timeout before the attempt.

"I don't believe in waiting until the last second to call timeout in those situations because I don't ever like letting the kicker get a free swing at it," Hokies coach Justin Fuente said. "I hollered 'timeout,' I guess I waited too long, so I told the team it's on me.

"I called timeout, we blocked the field goal and ran it back for a touchdown. So we went from elation, to not knowing if we were defending another field goal kick."

Liberty then elected to go for it on fourth-and-6 from the Virginia Tech 41. Malik Willis found CJ Yarbrough for an 8-yard gain at the Virginia Tech 33 with 5 seconds left, allowing Barbir to come out for a shorter 51-yard attempt, which he drilled.

"I never wait that long, I never have. If we're going to take a timeout, I take it early so they don't get the chance to snap it," Fuente said. "I said 'timeout,' and they didn't hear me. I screamed 'timeout,' and the ref blew the whistle."

Willis led the Flames, who knocked off their second ACC opponent this season and won their eighth straight game going back to last season. He threw for 217 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 108 yards and a score.

Hendon Hooker paced Virginia Tech, throwing for 217 yards and three touchdowns and rushing for 156 yards and a touchdown.

The Flames masterfully controlled the clock, holding the ball for more than 37 minutes, keeping their defense off the field, and winning time of possession for the sixth time in seven games. Their ability to control the clock helped their defense against a Virginia Tech offense that came into the game averaging 472.8 yards and 37.7 points per game.

"I told our football team I was really proud of the way they played situational football there at the end," Fuente said. "I told them I may never get over it, I really wish I hadn't called timeout."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
