Only 14 years old, Brazil’s Sophia Kelmer once again enjoyed success at the ITTF Copa Tango in Buenos Aires.

In November 2021, she won women’s singles class 6-10; the third highest rated player on duty, in a group administered event, she finished ahead of Argentina’s Giselle Muñoz and Chile’s Ailyn Espinoza.

On Saturday 9th July, once again she faced Giselle Muñoz, on this occasion she Sophia Kelmer was the top seed and expected to win; in their semi-final encounter she duly obliged in straight games (11-7, 11-7, 11-8).

The win reflects the progress the Brazilian has made in recent months; some seven months ago the decision was in four games (7-11, 11-3, 11-6, 11-9).

A place in the final; Sophia Kelmer secured the title at the expense of Chile’s Florencia Perez (11-4, 11-9, 11-6).

“I did everything I had been training for and gained points on the world rankings. Indeed, it is my second gold medal at the Copa Tango, I like to compete again in Argentina. I think that in general it was a very good tournament for me, maybe in serve and receive I was able to make a difference without neglecting other aspects of my game.

To play well and get results, I always have to keep my head up, stay focused and work hard; think about each point and each game in particular. Honestly it doesn’t matter who is my opponent, I have to play my game and try my best to win.” Sophia Kelmer

In the ensuing women’s doubles, Sophia Kelmer partners Danielle Rauen (class 20), in the mixed doubles, Lucas Carvalho (class 17).
