Latest all-round prospect shines at Bedford with impressive age-group victory

ENGLISH SCHOOLS COMBINED EVENT & RACE WALK CHAMPIONSHIPS, Bedford, September 16-17

Commonwealth Youth Games hurdles silver medallist Thea Brown won the inter girls heptathlon with a PB score of 5274 and that moved her to fourth all-time on the UK all-time under-17 womens rankings one point ahead of Jade ODowda and ahead of a certain Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who had a best of 5146 in this age group.

The 16-year-olds marks were 11.21/-0.6 in the hurdles, 11.09m in the shot, 1.71m in the high jump and 24.70/1.3 in the 200m, 6.02/2.9 in the long jump, 25.41m in the javelin and 2:26.90 in the 800m. The long jump was her furthest yet and the hurdles was her best legal mark.

Its worth noting, though, that despite winning the high jump, she does have a 1.84m PB this year so has plenty of scope to score much higher in 2024 when she hits the junior ranks.

Thea Brown (Mark Shearman)

Runner-up Eden Robinson also bettered the score of the double world champions 2008 mark as her 5213 moved her to eighth all-time.

Conrad Winter improved on his second place last year though his 6323 score bettered Sulaiman Ouiles PB by just five points in the senior event as his 4:42.55 1500m proved decisive as his rival was 12 seconds slower though Ouiles was only 12th in 2022.

Sam Wright failed to finish in 2022 but here he won the inter octathlon by over 300 points with a  5435 PB score which moved him to 10th all-time on the UK rankings.

The first 24 set PBs in the junior pentathlon but there was a clear win for Daniel Brown who moved to ninth all-time with a score of 3271.

Nene Davenport, only 15th last year, won a hard fought senior girls heptathlon with a score of 4776 giving her 29 points advantage over Millie Hardy.

The junior girls pentathlon was also close with masses of PBs as Gracie Osman 3244 edged Molly Mills 3229.
