The prize in Tunis for the winner is a reservation in ITTF Women’s World Cup to be staged in Bangkok from Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th October.

Undoubtedly the 25 year old Egyptian, who now plies her trade with Langstadt in the German Bundesliga League, is the favourite but she is well aware that within the continent, standards are rising.

“The ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup is unique as only a few African players participate; this makes it different to other African events. Also, it is unique as it qualifies for the World Cup, which is one of the most prestigious events of the year.

I am very happy and proud that African players are making it to the top in the world; I think we can still even do better. I think the fact that African players are now active and participating in quite a lot of tournaments is the reason why there is an improvement in our world rankings; not only our world ranking but also our levels and experience.

Certainly, I will try to retain my title but I will just have fun during the competition and focus on every point. I know it is not going to be easy, as everyone is improving and also going to fight for the title.

I remember the venue in Tunisia was quite big and impressive; it’s been a while since I last played an African event in Tunisia.” Dina Meshref
