MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Spire Motorsports has announced a change of plans for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series event at Talladega Superspeedway.
The team originally announced earlier this week that five-time Indianapolis 500 starter James Davison would drive for the team in the GEICO 500 in his Cup Series debut. However, after a consultation with NASCAR, Davison will instead make his Cup Series debut at Pocono Raceway the following weekend.
Spire Motorsports has instead named B.J. McLeod as the driver of the No. 77 Chevrolet for this weekend.
“I have been contacted by NASCAR and informed that although I was previously approved to race, they had to reconsider their position on superspeedways, given there won’t be practice or qualifying prior to Sunday’s race at Talladega,” explained Davison in a Twitter post. “I was pumped about the opportunity to take the green flag, but I fully understand and appreciate NASCAR’s position. I’m approved to race next weekend at Pocono and equally thrilled to make my series debut there.”
