Hamilton Cruises To Eighth Win In Hungary

MOGYOROD, Hungary – Lewis Hamilton’s victory in Sunday’s Aramco Hungarian Grand Prix was never in doubt.

After starting from the pole, Hamilton commanded the 70-lap race at the Hungaroring, taking the checkered flag for the 86th time in his illustrious Formula One career.

Hamilton’s dominance was so much so that, with a lead of more than 25 seconds in the closing laps, his Mercedes AMG Petronas team brought him into the pits for a free stop and a fresh set of soft-compound Pirelli tires – all to try for the bonus point for the fastest lap.

Not only did Hamilton accomplish that feat, stealing fast-lap honors from teammate Valtteri Bottas twice in the last three laps, but he ripped off a new race lap record of 1:16.627 on the final lap of the 4.381-kilometer, 14-turn circuit for good measure.

It marked Hamilton’s eighth win in Hungary, tying Michael Schumacher’s record for the most triumphs at a single venue, as well as his third in a row there.

After his late pit stop, Hamilton crossed the finish line 8.7 seconds clear of runner-up Max Verstappen, who put his Red Bull-Honda between the two Mercedes on the podium.

“What an incredible race. Honestly, that was one of my favorites that I’ve raced, even though I was on my own for the majority,” Hamilton said. “It’s a very different kind of challenge and I was pushing hard out there – particularly for the fastest lap at the end. I want to say a huge congratulations to everyone back home at the factory in Brackley and at HPP in Brixworth, they’ve done such a fantastic job developing and improving for this year and this team just continues to amaze me. I love working with them and I’m grateful to be able to perform for them on weekends like this.

“We had great pace today, brilliant pit stops, a fantastic strategy and then, as I was managing those mediums for a long, long time, at the end it was the perfect time to get on fresh tires and take that extra point for fastest lap,” Hamilton continued. “Everything has just been on point throughout the weekend, so we need to try and keep it up.”

Verstappen’s second-place finish came after a seventh-place start and a crash during the formation lap that saw his crew have to make quick repairs before the start.

Hamilton’s teammate, Valtteri Bottas, completed the podium ahead of Racing Point’s Lance Stroll and the second Red Bull of Alex Albon.

Sebastian Vettel gave Ferrari one of its better runs so far this season by finishing sixth, followed by the second Racing Point of Sergio Perez and Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo.

Haas F1’s Kevin Magnussen scored the American team its first points of the season with a strategic run to ninth, while McLaren’s Carlos Sainz rounded out the top 10 after a late pass of Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari.

Formula One now takes a one-week break before heading to the Silverstone Circuit for the British Grand Prix on Aug. 2, the first of two races at the facility.

The finish:

Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, Valtteri Bottas, Lance Stroll, Alex Albon, Sebastian Vettel, Sergio Perez, Daniel Ricciardo, Kevin Magnussen, Carlos Sainz, Charles Leclerc, Daniil Kvyat, Lando Norris, Esteban Ocon, Romain Grosjean, Kimi Räikkönen, Antonio Giovinazzi, George Russell, Nicholas Latifi, Pierre Gasly.
