Clippers without George (toe) for 2-game trip

Published in Basketball
Tuesday, 09 February 2021 15:16

The LA Clippers will be without Paul George for at least two more games as he continues to deal with a swollen right toe, coach Ty Lue said Tuesday.

George will not join the team on its two-game road swing through Minnesota and Chicago, which begins Wednesday with a matchup against the Timberwolves.

George has missed the past two games and is trying to get the swelling to go down in the toe. He could be re-evaluated as early as Saturday.

"Staying back home and getting some treatment," Lue said of George. "And we'll reevaluate when we get back."

The Clippers could have injured starting point guard Patrick Beverley back as soon as Wednesday against the Timberwolves. Beverley, who has missed the past eight games with right knee soreness, was upgraded to questionable for the game.

Gudaf Tsegay smashes world indoor 1500m record in Liévin

Published in Athletics
Tuesday, 09 February 2021 15:32
A British best by Laura Muir, European record by Jakob Ingebrigtsen and near world records by Grant Holloway and Getnet Wale on an historic evening of action

Tuesday evening’s Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais had been billed as the stand-out event of the season so far and it will go down as one of the best in history, with a series of storming performances in Liévin capped by Gudaf Tsegay’s world indoor 1500m record of 3:53.09.

By the time world bronze medallist Tsegay took to the track, there had already been a near world indoor 3000m record by Getnet Wale and a European indoor 1500m record by Jakob Ingebrigtsen, while Laura Muir’s time in second behind Tsegay broke the British indoor record and Grant Holloway rounded out the evening by missing the world 60m hurdles record by just 0.02.

In the women’s 1500m, Ethiopia’s Tsegay took more than two seconds off the world indoor record set by Genzebe Dibaba in 2014, managing to hold on after being paced through some fast early laps.

Following the pacemaker through 400m in 58.97 and then passing 800m in 2:05.94, the 24-year-old had already created a significant gap on the rest of the field. She went through 1000m in 2:37.36, with European champion Muir running solo behind her.

Gritting her teeth, Tsegay stormed over the finish line with the clock reading 3:53.09 before she erupted into celebrations.

Behind her, Muir broke her training partner Jemma Reekie’s British indoor record with 3:59.58, while their fellow Briton Melissa Courtney-Bryant finished third in 4:04.79.

Reekie was also in action in Liévin and won the earlier 800m A race in 2:00.64, beating Habitam Alemu (2:00.86), Hedda Hynne (2:00.92) and world U20 indoor record-holder Keely Hodgkinson (2:01.71), with Britain’s Hodgkinson fresh from her 1:59.03 record run in Vienna.

A dominant race by their fellow Briton Elliot Giles in Liévin saw the European medallist clock 1:45.49 after a fast start to win by more than a second.

The men’s 1500m race also saw the record book rewritten as Norway’s 20-year-old double European champion Ingebrigtsen dominated to win in 3:31.80 and improve the continental mark. His time moves him to fifth on the world indoor all-time list behind only Samuel Tefera (3:31.04), Hicham El Guerrouj, Yomif Kejelcha and Haile Gebrselassie.

Destroying a top-class field, Ingebrigtsen won by five seconds and world medallist Marcin Lewandowski claimed the runner-up spot in 3:36.83. Andrew Coscoran ran 3:37.20 to finish fifth and also move to fifth on the Irish indoor all-time list. World indoor 3000m medallist Bethwell Birgen was 10th in 3:39.27, while Tefera was 11th in 3:39.27 and the winner’s older brother Filip was 12th in 3:40.09.

The world record was also threatened in the men’s 3000m as steeplechase specialist Wale missed Daniel Komen’s 1998 global mark by just 0.08 with his run of 7:24.98.

Prior to the race, a total of six athletes had bettered 7:30 for 3000m indoors. That club now has four more members as behind Wale, who ran a roughly 1:54 last 800m off a fast pace, there was a time of 7:26.10 by Selemon Barega, 7:27.98 by Lemecha Girma and 7:29.24 by Berihu Aregawi.

The fast times kept on coming and the final race of the evening saw Holloway come close to Colin Jackson’s world 60m hurdles record as he clocked 7.32 to move to second on the world all-time list, improving his own US record of 7.35. He had run 7.38 in his heat.

Wilhem Belocian was second in 7.52.

A close women’s race was won by Nadine Visser as she, Christina Clemons and Nooralotta Neziri all ran 7.91.

Marcell Jacobs ran 6.54 to win the men’s 60m, matching his PB time from the heats, while the women’s event was won by Javianne Oliver in 7.10.

The head-to-head between double world champion Sifan Hassan and world steeplechase record-holder Beatrice Chepkoech didn’t materialise in the women’s 3000m as 19-year-old Lemlem Hailu, the 2017 world under-18 champion, surged away on the final lap and won in a meeting record of 8:32.55 ahead of Hassan’s 8:33.62 and Chepkoech’s 8:34.21.

Winfred Mutile Yavi set a world best in the rarely-run indoor 2000m steeplechase, clocking 5:45.09.

In the field events, the spotlight had been on the men’s pole vault as it featured five six-metre-plus vaulters, including world record-holder Mondo Duplantis, fresh from his 6.03m clearance in Rouen.

But they didn’t hit such heights this time, with Duplantis winning the competition on countback thanks to his 5.86m clearance before retiring from the competition as a precaution with a reported hamstring niggle.

Chris Nilsen cleared the same height to finish second as former world record-holder Renaud Lavillenie was third with 5.80m, world bronze medallist Piotr Lisek fourth with 5.74m, Olympic champion Thiago Braz joint fifth with 5.60m and two-time world champion Sam Kendricks joint seventh, also with 5.60m.

British record-holder Holly Bradshaw, who cleared 4.85m in Rouen, won the women’s competition with a 4.73m vault as Olympic champion Katerina Stefanidi was second with 4.63m.

World indoor champion Juan Miguel Echevarria improved the world long jump lead to 8.25m in the final round of the competition, winning ahead of Miltiadis Tentoglou who had earlier equalled the world lead with 8.21m.

Over in the triple jump, world indoor record-holder Hugues Fabrice Zango found his rhythm after three fouls and leapt 17.82m in the fifth round to win the competition.

World leader Auriol Dongmo was the evening’s first winner as she claimed shot put victory with a throw of 19.18m.

Wales are set to call up Cardiff Blues trio Willis Halaholo, Lloyd Williams and James Botham to the Six Nations squad.

Centre Johnny Williams, wing Hallam Amos and scrum-half Tomos Williams will miss the match against Scotland.

Uncapped Halaholo was called up against Barbarians in November 2019.

The 30-year-old centre missed the non-capped international after suffering a serious knee injury playing for his region that ruled him out for almost a year.

New Zealand-born Halaholo qualified through residency after joining the Cardiff Blues in 2016.

Veteran British and Irish Lions centre Jamie Roberts has been in form for Dragons his season, but remains training with his region.

Player call-ups will be officially made and announced following the latest round of Covid-19 testing and results.

Wales coach Wayne Pivac is hoping George North will be fit for Scotland after the 28-year-old back suffered a scratched eye during the second half of his try-scoring performance on Sunday.

Dragons centre Nick Tompkins is also struggling with a shoulder injury, with Owen Watkin the other fit midfield man in the squad.

Scarlets centre Jonathan Davies will again be missing at Murrayfield having been unavailable to face Ireland with an ankle injury.

Tomos Williams is in danger of missing the rest of the tournament with the hamstring problem he suffered against Ireland.

His Cardiff Blues team-mate Lloyd Williams has been summoned ahead of Rhys Webb, whose pace and speed of pass was questioned by Pivac when the Six Nations squad was named in January.

Gareth Davies and Kieran Hardy are the other scrum-halves in the squad.

Lloyd Williams, 31, was called up to the autumn internationals squad after a four-year international absence and featured against Ireland, England and Scotland.

Cardiff Blues back-rower Botham was also brought into the autumn internationals squad as a replacement and won three caps against Georgia, England and Italy before being omitted from the Six Nations party.

Wing Josh Adams is also absent for Scotland as he serves the second game of a two-match ban after breaching Covid-19 regulations.

Liam Williams will be back after suspension after being sent off for Scarlets against Cardiff Blues last month and is in line to replace the concussed Amos.

McTominay lifts Man United into FA Cup quarters

Manchester United reached the FA Cup quarterfinals for the seventh season in succession as substitute Scott McTominay's goal in extra time sealed a 1-0 win over West Ham United on Tuesday.

Both sides lacked spark in a dire fifth-round clash with precious few chances in normal time at Old Trafford.

But McTominay finally relieved the tedium with a sharp low shot from Marcus Rashford's clever set-up in the 97th minute.

United badly missed the creative flair of Bruno Fernandes, who came off the bench in the 73rd minute, although they did create the only real chances in normal time with Lukasz Fabianski making good saves from Victor Lindelof and Rashford.

West Ham created next to nothing although Craig Dawson failed to connect with a header in front of goal in the last seconds of normal time.

Seahawks' Wilson sounds off on hits he's taking

Published in Breaking News
Tuesday, 09 February 2021 13:23

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson said he's frustrated by the amount of times he's been hit throughout his career and expressed his desire to be more involved with the team's personnel decisions.

"Like any player, you never want to get hit," Wilson told reporters via Zoom on Tuesday. "That's the reality of playing this position. Ask any quarterback who wants to play this game. But at the same time, it's part of the job and everything else. I think that the reality is I've definitely been hit. I've been sacked almost 400 times, so we've got to get better. I've got to find ways to get better, too."

Asked if he's frustrated with the Seahawks, Wilson said with a laugh: "I'm frustrated [about] getting hit too much. I'm frustrated with that part of it. At the end of the day, you want to win."

Wilson's comments mark the first time he has publicly expressed this degree of displeasure with his pass-protection or any other aspect of the organization that drafted him in 2012. They come on the heels of an NFL Network report stating that multiple teams have called the Seahawks about a possible trade for the eight-time Pro Bowler.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, those calls were nonstarters for the Seahawks, who have made it clear to suitors that Wilson won't be dealt. He has three years left on the four-year, $140 million extension he signed in April of 2019. Trading Wilson before June 1 of this year would trigger $39 million in dead-money charges against Seattle's 2021 salary cap.

Wilson has been sacked 394 times in his career. According to ESPN Stats & Information, that's the most in a player's first nine seasons since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. Randall Cunningham is next at 366.

Wilson's 47 sacks in 2020 were third-most in the NFL behind Carson Wentz (50) and Deshaun Watson (49). The Seahawks were ninth-best in ESPN's pass block win rate (61.9%) this past season and rank eighth since 2017 (59.2%), which is indicative of how some of Wilson's sacks are a function of his propensity to extend plays.

"I think about my career and what I want to be able to do, it always starts up front, offensively defensively, it always does," Wilson said. "... I came to play this game to win championships, so if you ask me about the trust factor of it all, I've always put my trust in the Seahawks trying to do whatever it takes to win and hopefully that will continue. I think that's a key part. I think part of that is how we go about the protection part of it and figuring those other things out like that."

The Seahawks have Pro Bowl left tackle Duane Brown and right tackle Brandon Shell each under contract for one more season. Right guard Damien Lewis, a third-round pick in 2020, was named to the Pro Football Writers Association's All-Rookie team after starting every game. Left guard Mike Iupati and center Ethan Pocic are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents.

Wilson said during his videoconference that he wants to have the voice in personnel decisions that other top quarterbacks have or have had, naming Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees. Wilson made the same point earlier Tuesday in an interview with the Dan Patrick Show.

"I want to be able to be involved because at the end of the day, it's your legacy, it's your team's legacy, it's the guys you get to go into the huddle with, and at the end of the day, those guys you've got to trust," Wilson told Patrick. "When you think about one of the reasons why Tom went to Tampa was because he felt like he could trust those guys and [coach Bruce Arians] was going to give him the opportunity. ... You think about guys like LeBron [James], he was able to be around great players that he can trust.

"I think for me, any time you bring free agents in or other players, you want the best players, guys who love the game, guys who want to be a part of that. And as a player, you kind of know that, you get to be around Pro Bowls, you get to kind of see these guys, you get to be in the huddle with the linemen or the receivers or you get to be around defensive guys. So you kind of build that over time and you get to see who can really play. As a player, you really know. I think that relationship is really key and that dialogue, especially being a veteran player, that dialogue is really important."

Asked whether he is or has been involved in those conversations, Wilson said "not as much." He added: "I think it helps to be involved more. But I think that dialogue should happen more often, in my opinion."

Of teams calling the Seahawks about a potential trade, Wilson told Patrick: "Yeah, I definitely believe that they've gotten calls, for sure. I think that any time you're a player that tries to produce every week and has done it consistently, I think people are going to call for sure, and it's part of the process."

Asked if he's available, Wilson said: "I'm not sure if I'm available or not. That's a Seahawks question. But I think more than anything else, I think at the end of the day you want to win. ... You play this game to be the best in the world. You know what I hate? I hate sitting there watching other guys play the game. There's nothing worse."

Brewers sign Zimmermann to minor league deal

Published in Baseball
Tuesday, 09 February 2021 13:21

The Milwaukee Brewers have signed former All-Star pitcher Jordan Zimmermann to a minor league contract that includes an invitation to major league camp, the team announced Tuesday.

Zimmermann, who turns 35 on May 23, pitched in just three games for the Detroit Tigers last season due to a forearm injury after going 1-13 with a 6.91 ERA in 2019. He was a two-time All-Star with the Washington Nationals, who selected him from Division III school Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the second round of the 2007 draft.

He described his injury as a "forearm flexor thing'' and returned to make three September appearances last year, going 0-0 with a 7.94 ERA. Zimmermann says he now is as healthy as he's been in a few years.

"If I didn't feel good or I didn't feel healthy, I was probably thinking about retiring,'' Zimmermann said. "But I started working out, started running, started throwing and doing everything I normally do. The body feels good and the mind is telling me to keep going. I'm going to definitely give it another year, and we'll see what happens after this year.''

Zimmermann went 70-50 with a 3.32 ERA with the Nationals from 2009 to 2015, and he finished seventh in the Cy Young Award voting in 2013 and fifth in 2014 while making the NL All-Star team both of those seasons.

He threw the first no-hitter in Nationals history when Washington beat the Miami Marlins 1-0 in the 2014 regular-season finale.

Zimmermann wasn't nearly as effective after moving to the American League, posting a 25-41 record with a 5.63 ERA for Detroit over the past five seasons.

"If I didn't have anything left, I probably would have retired and gone out on my own terms,'' Zimmermann said. "But my body and my mind tell me, 'You still have more left.' Obviously, I want to go out there and stay healthy. I know I can get guys out. It's definitely going to be nice getting back in the NL because I feel a lot more comfortable there than where I was.''

Marlins add veteran slugger Duvall on 1-year deal

Published in Baseball
Tuesday, 09 February 2021 14:23

MIAMI -- Outfielder Adam Duvall agreed to terms Tuesday on a one-year contract with the Miami Marlins.

At 32, Duvall will provide power and a veteran bat to a team that is expected to rely heavily on developing youngsters. Duvall hit 16 home runs last year for Atlanta, which would have led the Marlins.

Miami finished ahead of only four other teams in homers in 2020, and Brian Anderson led them with 11.

Duvall had an OPS of .833 in 57 games last year. He has hit 105 homers since 2016.
