Source: Lefty McGee leaves Dodgers for Giants

Published in Baseball
Tuesday, 09 February 2021 14:28

Left-handed reliever Jake McGee is leaving the Los Angeles Dodgers to join the rival San Francisco Giants, agreeing to a two-year, $7 million contract, a source confirmed to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

McGee, who went 3-1 with a 2.66 ERA in 24 appearances for the Dodgers in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, could get ample opportunities to close with the Giants.

He has closing experience in his career, having saved 19 games for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2014 and 15 games for the Colorado Rockies in 2016.

The 11-year veteran is 28-23 with a 3.59 ERA and 45 saves in 546 appearances in his career.

The news of McGee's agreement was first reported by FanSided.

Andy Murray wins season opener at ATP Challenger in Biella

Published in Tennis
Tuesday, 09 February 2021 09:35

Britain's Andy Murray fought back from a set down to begin his 2021 season with a win against Maximilian Marterer in the ATP Challenger in Biella, Italy.

The Scot, ruled out of the Australian Open after a positive Covid test, beat Germany's Marterer 6-7 (3-7) 6-2 6-3.

It is Murray's second appearance in the ATP's second-highest tier in three years, after Mallorca in August 2019.

Murray, 33, faces Gian Marco Moroni in the second round after the Italian beat Russia's Evgeny Karlovskiy 7-6 6-4.

Murray was unable to find a "workable quarantine" as he was ruled out of the year's first Grand Slam in Australia, though he was permitted to play in Biella after a quarantine waiver was agreed for players travelling from outside the European Union.

The three-time Grand Slam champion and former world number one played only seven official matches last year because of a pelvic injury and the five-month suspension of the tours caused by the pandemic.

In his first match since October, Murray responded to being edged out in the tie-break at the end of a tight opening set by twice breaking Marterer's serve to claim the second in 33 minutes and closing out the final set by winning the final three games.

Ireland flanker Peter O'Mahony has been given a three-match ban for his red card offence in his side's Six Nations defeat by Wales in Cardiff.

O'Mahony was dismissed by referee Wayne Barnes in the 14th minute of Sunday's match for dangerous play.

The Munster captain became the first Ireland player to be sent off in the Six Nations.

O'Mahony will miss Ireland's games with France, Italy and Scotland but will be available to face England on 20 March.

The 31-year-old was sent off for leading with his forearm into the face of Wales prop Tomas Francis as the forward lay in a ruck.

O'Mahony appeared before an independent disciplinary committee on Tuesday.

The committee found that the Ireland player's actions amounted to "reckless contact with the head" and found that the entry point was mid-range, which carries a six-week suspension.

However, the fact there were no off-field aggravating factors as well as the player's record and conduct in the hearing, O'Mahony received a 50% reduction of sanction in mitigation.

Logano Has Fun Getting Dirty At Volusia

Published in Racing
Tuesday, 09 February 2021 11:00

BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Of all the things that may have been expected in the motorsports industry during Florida Speedweeks, Joey Logano racing a UMP modified during the 50th DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park probably wasn’t on anyone’s list.

Logano, the 2018 NASCAR Cup Series champion, raced for two nights at the half-mile dirt oval in a No. 15 car owned by Ryan Flores, a longtime Team Penske crew member and a passionate short-track racer in his own right in TQ midgets.

Considering Logano had never raced a UMP modified on dirt prior to Friday evening, his results were surprising, to say the least.

Logano charged from 19th to third in one of five 15-lap features Friday, then kept his car clean on Sunday with a quiet drive from 20th to finish 16th in the 20-lap Gator Qualifier main event.

While he admitted the endeavor wasn’t something he would have done if not for the new NASCAR Cup Series dirt race at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway on March 28, the 30-year-old lit up when describing the joy he got from stepping out of his comfort zone and trying something different.

“It probably isn’t something that I was going to do (otherwise), but man, it was a lot of fun,” said Logano during his Daytona 500 Media Week availability on Tuesday. “I’m glad I did it, either way. Trying to convince the boss man to (allow me) to go play around in something different took some help … to get to go play in their car a little bit, but I feel like I’m a better race car driver now than I was a couple of days ago before I went to Volusia.”

However, Logano didn’t mince words when describing his learning curve with the UMP modified.

“As far as being a dirt racer … I tell you I was clueless,” admitted Logano. “I was a dart without feathers. The rear ends of those dirt cars move so much, and you have to keep them up on the bars, as they say, and keep that left rear driven up so forward. You do that by keeping your foot on the gas. It’s easy when you’re by yourself, but then when there were 20 cars around me, I was all over the place.

“Just trying to figure it out, as cool as it was, all the drivers there were very welcoming and had plenty of advice to give me, which was great,” Logano added. “All their advice was different, though, which was very confusing because there areapparently 10 different ways you can drive a dirt car and still go fast. It was fun, though, listening to everybody and getting to figure it out as I went along.

“I’m looking forward to doing it some more because I had a good time doing it … and it was a fun way to try to get out there and see where we stacked up against the big dogs.”

Logano was quick to note that driving a dirt modified was nothing like wheeling his Team Penske Fords on pavement.

“Driving a dirt modified basically means take everything you’ve learned about driving a race car on asphalt and throw it right out the window. It doesn’t mean anything,” said Logano with a laugh. “It actually hurts you; it’s just a different type of racing. The way you drive the car and everything you do is quite a bit different. I can see how it’s very hard to transfer back and forth, whether you grew up on dirt trying to switch over to asphalt or not. That’s a tough change to make.

“It’s the same thing if you go the other way. For me, as the asphalt guy going in there, I went out there and practiced and it looked like I’d never driven a car before,” Logano added. “Eventually, I think talent is talent and race car drivers are race car drivers, and you figure it out. Over time, I think you can transfer back and forth. I think it just takes a little bit of time to figure out the process.”

As he moves back to his day job and takes aim at winning a second Daytona 500, Logano noted he has a new respect for grassroots dirt racing now that he’s had his first taste of it.

He also said that it’s important for NASCAR drivers to be able to branch out and reach fans by racing at the short-track level, much like Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell and Chase Elliott have done recently.

“Looking back at it, I think it’s very important and I don’t think I really realized how different the fans are in dirt racing compared to NASCAR fans,” tipped Logano. “I thought, ‘Hey, they’re two of the same,’ really. It’s a different demographic on the dirt side, compared to what we have here, and there are diehard dirt fans and they love it. I think the more we can cross over NASCAR drivers to race on dirt, or vice versa even, I think it kind of blends those two sides together more and more. Because it should be one, right? I feel like a motorsports fan should be a motorsports fan and love every type of (racing) in some fashion.

“I thought dirt-racing fans were NASCAR fans and I don’t think that’s quite the case in all of them … probably in half of them, I’d say. But I thought that what I did may have helped marry that a little more, and the more we race and show that we’re all race car drivers, we all love driving cars, just different types … I think it will help build and cross that bridge somewhat.”

Logano will chase victory in the 63rd Daytona 500 on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. ET, live on FOX, the Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, channel 90.

Gaulding Back Full Time In Xfinity With Means

Published in Racing
Tuesday, 09 February 2021 11:31

FORT WORTH, Texas – Gray Gaulding will team with Jimmy Means Racing to run full time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series this season, driving Means’ familiar No. 52 entry.

Gaulding’s longtime sponsor Panini America, the Official Trading Card Partner of NASCAR, will adorn the No. 52 Chevrolet Camaro for multiple races during the season.

The Virginia native debut with Means on Feb. 13 at Daytona (Fla.) Int’l Speedway during the Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner. 300.

Gaulding, who turns 23 Wednesday, returns to full-time status in the Xfinity Series after working through a limited schedule last year amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite those challenges, he earned two top-10 finishes in six starts, including a second-place finish at Daytona last August.

Gaulding finished 13th in the Xfinity Series standings in 2019 as the highest driver outside the playoffs. Since 2014, he has made 125 starts across NASCAR’s three national series.

“I am super pumped to return to the Xfinity Series this year, especially with Jimmy Means and his entire team, along with an amazing brand partner like Panini that continues to believe in me as I chase this dream,” said Gaulding. “Just like our great run in 2019 with Bobby Dotter, I am excited to work with a small team owner like Jimmy that has been behind the wheel and loves the sport of racing as much as I do.

“I am confident that, working together, we will have an amazing season and have a whole lot of fun out there grinding each week to try and make the playoffs!”

Means has fielded a car in the Xfinity Series since 2001 and has a combined 481 starts as an owner in the division, with one top-five and three top-10 finishes in recent years.

While Means’ team struggled to a 30th-place finish in driver points last year with driver Kody Vanderwal, the veteran owner is optimistic that Gaulding will be able to help elevate his team’s performance to new heights.

“I’m excited to have Gray Gaulding on board with us this season,” said Jimmy Means. “With his proven performance record, we hope to see some great finishes and improve our program in 2021.”

Other returning sponsors for Gaulding at Daytona include Kuykendall Hearing Aid Centers and Refi4Cash.com.

FENWICK: Fast Pasta Chases Cup Series Dream

CONCORD, N.C. — Anthony Alfredo climbed from his JR Motorsports Chevrolet and thrust his arms into the air in a moment of pure bliss.

He’d just won the first of a pair of CARS Late Model Stock Tour races scheduled for the night of May 6, 2017, at North Carolina’s Hickory Motor Speedway and he couldn’t contain himself. He was so excited, in fact, that it took him a minute to realize his overzealous celebration resulted in the checkered flag’s wooden rod snapping in two.

Alfredo triumphed after a side-by-side battle with Austin McDaniel.

“That was the hardest I’ve ever had to drive,” Alfredo said later.

However, Alfredo’s night wasn’t over. He started in the fifth row for the night cap and grabbed the lead from McDaniel on lap 66. McDaniel fought back and used the bumper of his car to move Alfredo out of the groove and regain the lead.

But Alfredo was not phased and within two laps he’d made his way back around McDaniel and began pulling away.

Alfredo completed a sweep of the doubleheader and it was a moment that, in many ways, catapulted him into the spotlight.

Since then, Alfredo’s racing career has been a whirlwind that culminated in January when he was selected to drive the No. 38 Ford Mustang for Front Row Motorsports in the NASCAR Cup Series.

The 21-year-old native of Ridgefield, Conn., has grown by leaps and bounds since his stint with the JR Motorsports late model program, which saw him finish second in the 2017 CARS Late Model Stock Tour standings.

He moved on to the ARCA Menards Series East to compete for MDM Motorsports in 2018, earning one victory and a top-five championship finish. His 2019 season saw him race part time in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series for David Gilliland, with a best finish of eighth at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Alfredo’s career really took off last year when he ran 19 NASCAR Xfinity Series races for Richard Childress Racing.

He quickly turned in strong results, earning a sixth-place finish in his series debut at California’s Auto Club Speedway. Those results continued with sixth-place finishes at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, Kentucky Speedway (twice) and Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway; a fourth-place finish at Homestead-Miami Speedway and a third-place effort in his final race of the year at Texas Motor Speedway.

The young man, who jokingly calls himself “Fast Pasta,” caught the attention of many in the garage area, paving the way for him to land the seat at Front Row Motorsports that was vacated by John Hunter Nemechek, who left to race for Kyle Busch Motorsports in the Camping World Truck Series.

“When you start out racing karts as a kid, you dream of making it to the sport’s top level,” Alfredo said. “I want to thank Bob Jenkins and everyone at Front Row Motorsports for making this dream a reality. I know the challenges ahead, but I’m here to work hard and prove myself.”

What should be expected from Alfredo this year?

That’s a good question as his rookie season at the Cup Series level will be his first full season competing in one of NASCAR’s three national series.

In addition, he’s driving for Front Row Motorsports, a team not known for consistently running at the front of the field. Speaking frankly, Alfredo should not be expected to light the world on fire this year.

Instead, what we should expect is for Alfredo to go out on track, keep his car clean and complete all of the laps. He likely won’t be in contention to win any races this year, but by staying out of trouble and completing as many laps as possible, he can have a successful season that will better prepare him for the future.

Anything beyond that would be a cherry on top of the sundae, as they say.

– There has been a small development in the search for more information regarding the vintage modified chassis discovered on my late grandfather’s property in Troy, Pa., which I wrote about a few months ago.

After speaking with the children of Rod Fifield, whom I thought was the last known owner of the car before it was found on my grandfather’s property, I discovered he never owned the car.

As it turned out, Fifield built nearly all of his own chassis during his racing career and the modified found on my grandfather’s property never graced his garage. Thus, we’re back to square one in the search for the origin of the No. 19 modified and how it ended up in my grandfather’s possession.

I am happy to report, however, that a race fan acquired the car during the auction of my grandfather’s estate and was considering restoring the car with a paint scheme similar to one of Denny Soltis’ old red-and-white No. 0 race cars.

Hopefully, the car will go on to live a long and joyful life away from the field my grandfather left it in.

Chevrolet Vehicles To Pace Daytona Fields

Published in Racing
Tuesday, 09 February 2021 12:14

DETROIT – Chevrolet will pace all three NASCAR national touring series races this weekend at Daytona Int’l Speedway.

Each season-opening race will be paced by a different Chevrolet model powered by a distinct variant of Chevy’s famed 6.2L small block V-8 engine with ties to Chevrolet Cup Series racing engines. Chevrolet’s three pace vehicles will produce a cumulative 1370 horsepower.

The mid-engine Corvette Stingray coupe will serve as the pace car for the renowned Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 14. At the heart of Corvette is a LT2 V-8, visible through the rear glass hatch, which produces 495 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque when equipped with the Z51 performance package – the most horsepower and torque for any entry Corvette.

Also pacing the field this weekend:

• Silverado 1500 RST in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series’ NextEra Energy 250 at 7:30 p.m. ET on Friday, Feb. 12
• Camaro SS 1LE in the Xfinity Series’ Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner. 300 at 5 p.m. ET on Saturday, Feb. 13

For the first time, key members of Team Chevy will present a behind-the-scenes look at elements of Daytona’s history and the technology used in current Daytona races.

Live from Daytona will showcase the rare GM Firebird I concept, highlight the history behind the Harley J. Earl trophy, compare the Camaro ZL1 1LE street and NASCAR Cup Series cars and feature the 2021 Daytona 500 Corvette pace car.

Live from Daytona is presented by Chevy MyWay, a virtual showroom-like studio, providing customers a new and innovative way to interact with Chevrolet products. The free 20-minute broadcast is open to all, and begins Saturday, Feb. 13, at 11 a.m. ET on Chevrolet.com/myway.

“Coming off of a successful 2020 on track in all three NASCAR national series, our drivers and teams are fired up and looking to put Chevrolet back in Victory Lane, starting at Daytona,” said Tony Johnson, director of Chevrolet Car and Crossover Marketing. “In addition to exciting green-flag racing, we’re really looking forward to showing off the Daytona 500 Corvette Stingray pace car and so much more for race fans Saturday during the ‘Live from Daytona’ broadcast presented by Chevy MyWay.”

All three Chevrolet pace vehicles have a racy red, white and blue theme inspired by the 2021 Daytona 500 logo. The Corvette-exclusive Rapid Blue color is featured on each vehicle and will make its debut as an available option on the 2022 Camaro. A tiled pattern using the Chevrolet bowtie, red accents, bold white lettering and pace car lighting complete the look for Corvette, Camaro and Silverado.

This marks the sixth time a Corvette has paced the Daytona 500. Overall, Chevrolet has paced The Great American Race 14 times.

The 455-horsepower LT1-powered 2021 Camaro SS 1LE is equipped to deliver high-performance thrills. The optional 1LE performance package with magnetic ride control offers 1.02g cornering capability.

Silverado is built to do the job right – every time. The Silverado RST is powered by an optional 6.2L EcoTec3 V-8 engine, which offers 420 horsepower.

Ex-Wild captain Koivu retires with Columbus

Published in Hockey
Tuesday, 09 February 2021 11:50

Mikko Koivu announced his retirement Tuesday, following a 16-year career in the NHL.

Koivu, the longtime Minnesota Wild captain, had signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets this offseason. He played in seven games for Columbus, tallying one goal and one assist.

"This was not an easy decision for me as I have loved every minute of my short time in Columbus and really hoped to be able to help this team accomplish its goals this season," Koivu said in a statement, released by the Blue Jackets. "But the bottom line is I haven't been able to get to the level of play that I need to be true to myself and fair to my teammates, so the time is right for me to retire from hockey."

Minnesota general manager Bill Guerin decided not to re-sign the veteran center after last season, which was Koivu's 15th with the team. Koivu is the Wild's all-time leader in games played (1,028) assists (504) and points and ranks second in goals (205).

Koivu, 37, a native of Turku, Finland, is a longtime stalwart with the Finnish national team. His relationship with Columbus GM Jarmo Kekalainen -- the NHL's first Finnish GM -- was one of the reasons Koivu decided to sign with the Blue Jackets.

"Mikko Koivu is a consummate pro and while we are disappointed that his time as a Blue Jacket was short, we understand and respect the decision he has made because it is the result of the deep respect he has for the game, our organization and his teammates," Kekalainen said in a statement. "I've known Mikko for a very long time and am proud of everything he has accomplished and how he has represented our club, the Minnesota Wild and Team Finland over the past two decades. I wish him many happy years as he transitions into the next chapter in his life."

Padraig Harrington withdrew from the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am after testing positive for COVID-19, the PGA Tour announced on Tuesday.

The European Ryder Cup captain has competed in one Tour event this year, missing the cut in last week's Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Harrington will have the Tour's full support throughout his self-isolation period under CDC guidelines, the circuit stated.

First alternate Sangmoon Bae will replace Harrington in the field.
