Timberwolves' Beasley sentenced for Sept. arrest

Published in Basketball
Tuesday, 09 February 2021 10:16

A judge in Minnesota on Tuesday sentenced Timberwolves guard Malik Beasley to 120 days in jail to be served after the NBA season after he pleaded guilty to one felony count of threats of violence.

Beasley's attorney, Steven Haney, told ESPN that Beasley will be part of a work release program and could potentially serve the sentence through home confinement. The felony charge might be reduced to a misdemeanor at the end of his probation, according to Haney.

Under a plea deal, prosecutors agreed to drop felony drug charges against Beasley.

"We are very pleased with this outcome that will allow Malik to continue working on becoming a better person and making better choices," Haney said in a statement.

Beasley, who is averaging 20.5 points and 5.2 rebounds, was facing felony controlled substance/narcotics and felony receiving/concealing stolen property charges, according to Hennepin County jail records.

In November, Beasley, a restricted free agent, reached a four-year, $60 million contract with the Timberwolves. The fourth year is a team option.

Beasley was arrested in late September at his home in Plymouth, Minnesota. In a statement to ESPN at the time, the Plymouth Police Department said officers were called to Beasley's residence on a reported weapons offense. The reporting individuals told officers they had stopped their car in front of the house, and a "suspect walked up to their vehicle, tapped on the vehicle window, pointed a gun at them and advised them to get off of the property."

"As the victims drove away, the suspect was observed holding the gun up to his shoulder, pointing it at their vehicle," the police statement said.

Officers set up a perimeter to locate the individual and detected a strong odor of marijuana, according to the statement. A vehicle attempted to leave the property and was stopped by police. Three people in the car were detained and later released. A man, who identified himself as the homeowner, was outside and yelling at officers.

Officers obtained a search warrant for the property and located narcotics and numerous guns, one of which was confirmed as stolen, police said.

Vaccine not required under MLB's COVID protocol

Published in Baseball
Tuesday, 09 February 2021 09:33

Major League Baseball players won't be required to take a COVID-19 vaccination, though it will be strongly encouraged by the players' union and the league when the time comes.

The voluntary program won't proceed until health officials deem it appropriate, but players who are otherwise eligible for a vaccine, before league implementation, will be allowed to receive one, according to the 108-page health and safety protocols agreed upon by the league and the union Monday night.

The detailed document covers everything from the start of spring training to a potential delay to the start of the postseason if regular-season games need to be completed. It even includes more than a dozen diagrams outlining socially distanced drills for teams to perform in spring training.

Players will be required to wear Kinexon wristbands at team facilities in order to conduct contact tracing in case of a positive test. They'll also be subject to fines based on days missed, due to quarantines, if they don't follow the health and safety protocols which mimic many of the same guidelines from last year:

  • Players are prohibited from gatherings of 10 or more people;

  • No indoor dining;

  • Bars and lounges are prohibited even if they serve food;

  • Players must receive permission to leave their hotels while on the road.

Before arriving at spring training, players will be required to self-quarantine for five days and fill out a health questionnaire. They'll undergo intake testing once in Arizona or Florida and, similar to last season, testing will continue at least every other day throughout spring training and the regular season.

Players will be allowed to opt out of the season, without pay, but can choose to return by petitioning its club.

Early spring games won't operate under normal rules. From Feb. 27 to March 13, managers can agree on playing shortened games of five or seven innings. They can also end innings before three outs have been made, and re-entry for pitchers will be permissible. From March 14 until the end of spring training, games will last the normal nine innings unless both managers agree to play seven.

In-game access to video terminals by players won't be permitted, but under the IPAD Dugout Program, players will be able to watch video of previous at-bats, but without the ability to see the catcher's signs.

All health and safety protocols will be subject to review as the season progresses and vaccines become more widely distributed.

CONCORD, N.C. — Chip Ganassi Racing has renewed its partnership with Yorktel and Caregility. Young’s Motorsports Finalizes Organizational Changes

Published in Racing
Tuesday, 09 February 2021 08:08

MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Young’s Motorsports officials have announced the completion of organizational changes ahead of Friday’s season-opener at Daytona Int’l Speedway on Feb. 12.

Young’s Motorsports has tapped Eddie Troconis to serve as crew chief of the team’s flagship No. 02 Chevrolet Silverado to be driven this year by Rookie of the Year candidate Kris Wright.

Troconis arrives at Young’s Motorsports with a lengthy resume of NASCAR competition, including several years as a crew chief in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Additionally, Troconis brings an engineering background to the forefront which will be beneficial as the Mooresville, N.C.-based organization returns to a three-truck operation this season.

“I’m happy to be at Young’s Motorsports this season,” said Troconis. “I’ve known Tyler (Young) for several years, having the opportunity to interact with him at the race track and I’ve always admired his work ethic to keep Young’s Motorsports a competitive and successful NASCAR Camping World Truck Series operation.

“I am looking forward to getting to Daytona with Kris (Wright) next weekend and getting our season started off with some momentum, not only for our No. 02 team, but the other two teams too.”

Additionally, Young’s Motorsports announced last week that Ryan London will return to the team and serve as crew chief of the No. 12 Young’s Motorsports Chevrolet driven by sophomore pilot Tate Fogleman.

London has prior leadership experience at Young’s Motorsports serving in the crew chief role of the No. 12 Young’s Motorsports truck during the second half of the 2019 Truck Series season.

With a flux of personnel changes during the off-season complete, Young’s Motorsports also successfully launched their ARCA Menards Series program which will make its series debut in the Feb. 13 running of the Lucas Oil 200 driven by General Tire.

The team announced recently that 19-time USAC winner Toni Breidinger will pilot the team’s No. 02 Chevrolet at Daytona Int’l Speedway in her fourth career ARCA Menards Series start, but first at Daytona’s 2.5-mile-high banks.

London will call the shots for 21-year-old Breidinger.

“It is shaping up to be a very fun year at Young’s Motorsports,” said team principal Tyler Young. “With that fun though comes responsibility and dedication and I believe the people that we have put in place from top to bottom will allow us to have a competitive season in both the ARCA Menards Series and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

“Eddie brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership and will be influential in helping build a successful brigade with Pickle and Joe (Lax, crew chief of the No. 20 Young’s Motorsports Chevrolet). Hopefully, Daytona treats us well and will be a sign of what is to come for our teams this year.”

Myles Rowe

INDIANAPOLIS – Officials from Force Indy, a race team created specifically to develop talent with a diverse group of individuals, have named Myles Rowe as the team’s first driver.

Rowe will make his debut as Force Indy’s inaugural driver in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship at the Barber Motorsports Park in Leeds, Ala., on April 15–18.

“We vetted many deserving young men and women and chose Myles based on his ability and performance, inside and outside of the cockpit,” said Force Indy Team Principal Rod Reid. “He understands Force Indy’s mission of building a diverse team of talented individuals. He’s a great fit for the team.”

Since the age of four, Rowe has been fascinated with all things racing. He’s a winner in the 2018 Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series. In 2016, he was awarded two Search for the Champion grand prize championships from the Federal-Mogul Motorparts’ iconic Champion brand. At the age of 12, he won the Procup Karting Championship during his first full season of racing. He’s competed in the TAG Junior category in the Superkarts USA, World Karting Association, and the United States Pro Kart Series. When he’s not racing, Rowe is a junior at Pace University, studying film and screen studies.

“It’s a blessing for sure. I didn’t expect to get started in open-wheel in this way. It’s definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I’m very grateful for it,” said Rowe. “I’ve been working hard for this moment; with all of the practice I’ve put in since I was 12 years old. So, when the opportunity came forth it was a relief honestly.”

Flyers now 5th NHL team paused due to COVID

Published in Hockey
Tuesday, 09 February 2021 09:00

Tuesday's Washington Capitals-Philadelphia Flyers game has been postponed because of COVID-19 issues on the Flyers, a source confirmed to ESPN.

The Flyers are now the fifth NHL team on pause. The Buffalo Sabres, Colorado Avalanche, Minnesota Wild and New Jersey Devils have all had games postponed this week thanks to clusters of COVID-19 cases.

Last week, the NHL enhanced its in-arena safety protocols, including enforcing more social distancing in locker rooms and removing glass behind benches for increased air circulation. The NHL also tried mandating that players arrive to the rink no less than one hour and 45 minutes before a game -- though the league softened its stance on that, because of significant player pushback.

The NHL has been testing players and staffers daily with PCR tests, but it has begun to layer in more rapid testing at arenas, especially on game days.

What happened to Sophia Popov last season on the LPGA won’t happen again.

The LPGA on Monday released a list of rule changes for this season, including a couple that will benefit non-members, like Popov last year, who win majors or other LPGA events.

Popov won last summer’s AIG Women’s Open, but because she had only Symetra Tour status, she was unable to collect official points and money (that kept her out of the season finale, the CME Group Tour Championship) and only received a two-year LPGA exemption, which begins this year.

“It’s the regulation we started the season with,” then LPGA commissioner Mike Whan said last year. “It’s what we’ll finish the season with.”

But the new rules make it so that non-member winners can count official money and points earned from that tournament toward season-long races. Starting this season, the LPGA is using its CME Globe Points list to determine status for the following season.

Non-member winners will now also receive five-year tour exemptions and be allowed to tee it up in the next week’s event, another thing Popov and U.S. Women's Open winner A Lim Kim, another non-member winner, couldn’t do a year ago.

“It’s awesome that they changed these things,” Popov told Golfweek. “I figured they wouldn’t make it retroactive for me. That they would change the rule in general so it wouldn’t happen to girls after me. … It’s all really just common sense to be honest, to me.”

Other rule changes include the return of mandatory caddies and local qualifying for some LPGA events, and a new pace-of-play policy that will kick in at the Kia Classic.
